As a 56 year old Englishman, this song just get better every year. Even gets me all emotional, what a great song. Never gets old. But as a well below average guitar player its a bugger to play. Thanks for this, love your Smiths. I will have another crack at this song. Love it. We were lucky to have this music in our youth.
It’s a great melody isn’t it, I remember Chet Atkins once said that great songs have great melodies and all so often these days they don’t. Thanks so much for your comment @salehurst, don’t forget to look at the chord sheet, and merry Christmas to you and yours 🤓🎄🎸👍🙏

Could DADGAD tuning work on this?
Yes absolutely, and for a lot of other Celtic music, this was a quick and easy version in standard tuning so maybe I’ll do in DADGAD next year! Thanks for getting in touch and happy Christmas 🎄🤓🙏🎸
Hello, I am a beginner and I am having trouble with the strumming pattern. Could you help me with timing or counting please.
Hi @priscillaboatman5682 thanks for getting in touch. I don’t think it’s an easy song for a beginner, as it changes tempo and there are some quick chord changes.
When strumming each chord try to hit the single note of the root of the chord first using a down stroke, the lowest part. So in a G chord for example hit the G note on the third fret of the sixth string with a down stroke. For an A chord hit the open A (5th string), for D chords the open D string (4th string), and for Bm the A string fretted at the second of playing it as a barre chord. I use my thumb over the top of the neck for that one.
So hit the root note with a down strike as above, to give you the bass, and then do three quick strums - down - up - down of the rest of the chord, before moving on to the next chord.
Good luck, hope you master it, and Happy Christmas 🎄🤓🙏🎸
Thank you very much! You are a very good teacher!@@GuitarGary.
Excellent. And the singing was very helpful. Almost a hint of Roger Whittaker at times (sorry!). You're clearly not from NE.
There’s a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbour… 😉I’m from Manchester but remember my parents loved Roger Whittaker and played him in the house when I was growing up. I’m definitely no singer but this song was just so way off for me and when I do these I have to do them in the recorded key, I’d capo or transpose if I was singing normally. Thanks Martin you’ve made me smile and thanks also for supporting my channel 🙏🤓🎸
Change the lyrics to bragart if you feel you have to.
Merry Christmas Gary, just wanted to say thanks for your take on this great song from Shane.
It's too bad you felt you shouldn't say the lyrics to that one verse ,,, but I understand why you did it in this day and age.
cheers!
Thanks Taylor glad you enjoyed it and merry Christmas 🙏🤓🎸
