    Thanks to your video I've just spent the last 3 days replacing my timing chain. It was very awkward, as most things are on an R53. Most of the time was spent removing parts to get to the chain and then replacing the parts once it was fitted. I did refer to your video a couple of times to check I was on the right course. Keep your videos coming. They're great!

    I have been chasing an issue in my R52 for months that caused it to go into limp mode. I finally gave up and had a mechanic look at it. Turns out the cranks shaft pulley (/harmonic balancer) rubber had perished. The pulley was wobbling, and scrapped up the timing chain cover. He replaced it, plus the front main seal and belt, and seems much better. I think I could have done it myself after watching this video, but just didn't have the time or energy.
    Next year, I hope to get back to some maintenance - supercharger oil change, oil cooler gaskets. Plus try my hand at redoing the flaking clearcoat.

    You can definitely insert the guides with the chain in place, even without the front end already ripped off for ease of work. Also the crank sprocket dot (the top one) should be right on that line on the block. If it all lines up properly your pistons should all be even plane using equal rods for measure.
    I had severe chain stretch and both the cam and the crank sprockets jumped teeth so I had to time from scratch. While I was there I replaced everything with a complete timing kit.

    • @ModAMiniGarage
      @ModAMiniGarage  4 года назад +1

      That's really interesting I did not know that! Live and learn everyday! I don't think it's to bad a job on these mini's to be honest it takes time but it's not particularly hard to do. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Miriam xx

      @@ModAMiniGarage definitely not a difficult job I had to complete my timing job on my butt, in the dark with a flashlight (and a small auxiliary light) because my r53 is my daily transporter to work.
      Wheels up to wheels down was about 4 hours as I was taking care of things while I was there as well.
      I can confidently say I can do the job in half the time wheels up to down. I think the toughest part is getting the pin in for the belt removal man who designed that nonsense as a solo job...

    Hey I had a question. At 44:25 into your video after you installed the tensioner back in I saw that the cam is in a different position. Is that because you have to get it to top dead center before starting the car? Because in the Bentley manual I see that the cam and crank sprocket in relation are in a different position than yours. The cam at about 2o'clock and the crank at 6o'clock. I have it set up like how you guys did with the timing tool in cam at 12o'clock and the crank at 3o'clock. I just really wanna be sure before starting up my car. Please help thanks. J.

  • @liamfanning_75
    @liamfanning_75 3 года назад +1

    One very important thing you missed... you NEED to put anti sieze on any stainless fasteners especially when going into a dissimilar metal like aluminum. My guess is that at least a few of those valve cover bolts are now in there for good and will need drilling. The longer you wait to take them out and put them in properly with anti sieze the less likely you are to get them out at all especially if some road salt gets in there and speeds up the corrosion (yes aluminum corrodes in case you didnt know that, its the white powdery build up you can get off with a wire brush). If that is a returning customer i strongly recommend getting the car back in there to do that because it would really suck to have to do a cylinder head replacement or at the very least removal and repair if those bolts were to snap.

    • @ModAMiniGarage
      @ModAMiniGarage  3 года назад +1

      That's great advice! I've never personally had this as an issue but I do know certain metals react with each other so I do get it! Thanks for the tip! Miriam xx

    Need a bit of advice. Is it possible to discharge the ac radiator by yourself if you want to replace the ac radiator I know there are two ports of the left hand side of the mini r53/r52/passanger side.. I wanted to change the ac radiator.

    • @ModAMiniGarage
      @ModAMiniGarage  3 года назад

      To discharge safely you need a machine that will essentially suck out what you have left in, it connects to the valves you mention and removes all the gas. Any company that does ac regases should be able to do this :)
      The only other way is to release the gas to the atmosphere, this is ILLEGAL in the UK, if you are in Israel as your name suggests this may be different but its very bad for the environment and shouldn't be done.
      Hope this helps, Miriam xx

Easiest way to check that noise is to take off the aux belt, start the car (don't let it run long as the waterpump won't be running but will be OK for a minute or so) if the noise goes, you know it's something to do with on of the pulleys or the aircon/alternator. Well done its a job i dread doing. When using that big impact gun try not to use extensions as you loose torque through them also when using a torque wrench try not to use extensions.

    This video keeps losing audio. The background music being stripped off? Would really prefer videos without the background noise. Love your work and thank you for sharing. Hope the dialog can be fixed.

      Really sorry for this... essentially the video has been copywrited by RUclips... so it cuts all the sound out that has copywroted material :( we will have to remake it annoyingly 😞 really appreciate you watching though! Miriam xx

      Thanks for watching :) you are correct, we are in no way associated with Mod Mini - we do however love his videos and content :)
      We run a company in the UK www.modamini.co.uk so our RUclips channel maintains this branding. Our channel was originally Mod A Mini... We renamed it and added 'Garage' when we realised the similarities to help differentiate between the 2 :) hope that this helps! Miriam
