Too many adults think their young child has the same dirty minds as they do. Most all kids don't "get" the adult jokes in cartoons. I never realized until I was an adult and rewatching some old cartoons that a lot of the jokes were geared toward adults and not children.
South Park needed to be mentioned. I loved it when it came out and still love it to this day. I was about 22 when it came out. It actually reminded me of how my friends and I acted.
This list is awesome. Other great ones would be... Heavy Metal, Wizards, Spawn, F Is For Family, Boondocks, Undergrads, Disenchantment, Venture Brothers, Family Guy, South Park, Sausage Party, Tripping The Rift, Clerks The Animated Series, Archer, Then the puppet show types Meet The Feebles, Happy Time Murders, Paul, Ted and Robot Chicken too. I'm sure there are a few I haven't yet seen.
Wizards is awesome, I seriously have to rewatch that one. I found out about it through taking a class called The History of Animation as I'm double majoring in animation and live action film+TV.
The Flintstones wasn't supposed to be for kids back in 1960. It's never really been animation is for kids, it just appeals to them, because, cartoonish...
Neither was the Jetsons and Looney Tunes. Looney Tunes were meant for adults during a break in a movie or just before it. Betty Boop (Before they regulated cartoons with The Production Code of 1934) Before this and you almost never can find them anymore of unregulated Betty's that weren't cut and remade.
You've got to dig for it, but there is a clip from the Flintstones were the wives are doing the yard work and Fred & Barney duck around back for a smoke. Winston cigarettes was the show's sponsor.
@@krb5292 Yes, indeed. And there was also a beer 'commercial' featuring Fred and Barney, too. Not so much of a TV ad, but some sort of promotional film. It's around on RUclips, too.
The FLINTSTONES were an animated rip-off of the HONEYMOONERS. In fact, Hanna Barbera very nearly got sued over it. Very few cartoons of the day were actually for children. ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE were originally shown in prime time. And it shows with the in-jokes that pepper the show. Children would not have understood them. The old Warner Brothers cartoons weren't really for kids, either. Most of them predate the rise of television, and were shown in theaters before the feature film. And a few of them were actually a little on the risque side. MGM had some racy 'toons, too. Red Hot Riding Hood, anyone?
Stripper-rella is at least partly based as a concept on 60's barbarella, a weird Sci-Fi movie that would have been considered racy and a bit raunchy. It like most of the stuff highlighted in this for teens and grown-ups is extremely tame now. Moral Oral is an underrated show with more depth to it than some might suspect.
Kind of cool seeing Space Ghost on the list. Although relative to all of the other mentions, I don't think the content is bad for kids. I just think most kids would be bored by it and move on. That's not a knock at the show though.
Definitely adult material! Also, Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings cartoon movie is wonderfully bizarre, (it covered only the first half of LOTR). The second half by another more conventional animation studio - Rankin Bass.
My mom took my sister and me to see Fritz the Cat when I was 7! There was a movie with Paul Winfield and Laurence Fishburne called Cornbread, Earl, and Me we wanted to see but mom said, "No! Children watch cartoons." And once she saw that it wasn't for kids, she doubled down and we saw it through to the end. Everyone in the theater gave her the evil eye, and the theater offered to give us free tickets to a more family friendly event. But, no..... I walked in a child and walked out a man. Been a Crumb fan ever since. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
How were you allowed in? It was rated X (the equivalent of NC-17 today) and no one under 17 is supposed to be allowed in But seeing the strong sexual content/ nudity and violence at that age didn’t scar you or make you feel extremely uncomfortable?
@@RYMAN1321 in the 70's. Everything was allowed. Minors could buy tobacco and liquor if the store owner knew them, police sold Marijuana, andwe couldplay outside miles from our homes until the street lights came on or turned off if it was the summer. We were with my Mom; we had Adult Supervision!!!
First I will say, was awesome!!! My family went to see "Fritz The Cat" at the local drive-in; it as a double feature with "Heavy Traffic" I don't think they knew what kind of movie's they were, but we all had a great time.
Years back,I saw a film called “ fantastic planet “. The film was made by a Czech director and is quite a mind trip! It’s hard to classify though ; it’s part Fantasy / part Sci-Fi. It is closer to Heavy Metal in style ; only not quite as sexually explicit . Check it out if you can find it!
Today’s parents? Our parents needed parental advisory stickers for music and M ratings for video games. Don’t forget the introduction of the PG-13 rating for movies.
I'm just wondering where the 3rd season will go? They've already lezzed out (not one boob sighted, by the way), the Joker is domesticated, Ivy's now ex-fiance was a Wuss-for-the-Ages, and King Shark is a homicidal metra-sexual (which is just a plain metra-sexual, if you think about it.)
space ghost was a fever dream for me until I watched it in full as an adult a couple years ago. I'd always fall asleep during Cartoon Cartoon Fridays and wakeup with this on.
@@velociraptor4you3291 no I literally mean they actually listed the video footage as Cool World when in actual fact it is Roger Rabbit... no matter how similar in style they are aimed at two very different audiences, and both are very different for starters Cool World actually stars Brad Pitt whereas Roger Rabbit stars Bob Hoskins

I think with all the suggestions from all the people you could easily make a part 2 and 3 of this topic. lol Rock & Rule and Heavy Metal neither one is really for kids though I did enjoy them when I was younger. Duck Man, damn that was a funny show. When the Wind Blows. Very dark animation about nuclear war if I remember right, its been a while since I seen it. Spawn The animated series. Fire & Ice and Wizards were both aimed at adults I think. Been a long time since I seen either so I'm not totally sure. The Maxx if I remember right killed lots of little things showed blood. The Head was another one I remember watching years ago that seemed more for adults.
I agree, though he meant it for Adults, most of these weren't. Except for Fritz(and Cool World) which started as an adult comic before the movie. I disagree with Samurai Jack and Moral Orel, we appear to be making comics and animated movies too childish now. even Japan has fallen into this.

Too many adults think their young child has the same dirty minds as they do. Most all kids don't "get" the adult jokes in cartoons. I never realized until I was an adult and rewatching some old cartoons that a lot of the jokes were geared toward adults and not children.
No Ren & Stimpy? That show bordered on the edge of taste.
Fritz the Cat is an awesome flick!!!
Yeah it was. 😏
You forgot Drawn together. The most adult cartoon there is.
Possibly the most reviled too.
South Park needed to be mentioned. I loved it when it came out and still love it to this day. I was about 22 when it came out. It actually reminded me of how my friends and I acted.
South Park is the best show currently in my notebook
Fire and ice, American pop, ninja scroll too
This probably should be titled "Western Cartoons that shouldn't be watched with kids"
Eastern animations generally aren't categorized as cartoons anyway.
This is weirdly conservative. Clone High and Space Ghost hasn’t scarred any kids. Is it that hard to remember what it was like to be young?
@@krb5292 It was, in fact, a Winston cigarettes commercial.
Fritz the cat is soooo far ahead of its time lol it's one of my favorites
The Bojack Horrseman of it's day
Kind of cool seeing Space Ghost on the list. Although relative to all of the other mentions, I don't think the content is bad for kids. I just think most kids would be bored by it and move on. That's not a knock at the show though.
Watching Aeon Flux was what led me to love sci fi as a kid
I mentioned 'Ren and Stimpy' to my 22 y/o health aide recently, and she had no idea what that was. I nearly cried
For real? I'm 22 and it's my favourite, a bit surprisin' since she's not even that young to be that clueless about it.
I feel like Heavy Metal should have been on this list.
Definitely adult material! Also, Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings cartoon movie is wonderfully bizarre, (it covered only the first half of LOTR). The second half by another more conventional animation studio - Rankin Bass.
YOU FORGOT THE PLAGUE DOGS lol and Heavy Metal
Watership Down too
Happy Tree Friends?
Indeed Htf should be on the list
I loved that show. Lol
Nah, That shouldn’t be seen by anyone...
It was rated X (the equivalent of NC-17 today) and no one under 17 is supposed to be allowed in
But seeing the strong sexual content/ nudity and violence at that age didn’t scar you or make you feel extremely uncomfortable?
@@RYMAN1321 in the 70's. Everything was allowed. Minors could buy tobacco and liquor if the store owner knew them, police sold Marijuana, andwe couldplay outside miles from our homes until the street lights came on or turned off if it was the summer. We were with my Mom; we had Adult Supervision!!!
Alternate title: Cartoons that you should never let your parents know exist.
I know this might be a little off the subject, but the ending movie to Rouroni Kenshin left me with so many sad and happy emotions.
Cartoons not for kids: Urotsukidoji aka The Legend of the Overfiend.
That 1 is nr1 not for kids all of them
Dude it ain't for adults either
Didn't think we were counting anime. There are tons that are inappropriate for kids. Think that's aimed at teens anyway.
I blv Looper was concentrating on US made & distributed material. So 'she' didn't mention Anime or European stuff.
@@MultiTomcat67 Legend of the Overfiend movie was the American distributed film in Japan it was a episodic anima like 4 episodes I believe
I remember Cool World! I was just talking about it the other day. I had to watch it after my parents went to bed.
I most definitely remember Striperella . it was raunchy stripper cartoon 😂
Two that were missed here: Rock and Rule is a great animated Adult classic. Harvey Birdman is a lot of fun.
I'd add the more recent "A Scanner Darkly" and "The Congress" as a couple of lesser known titles that are meant strictly for adults.
Big mouth. Check it out
First I will say, was awesome!!! My family went to see "Fritz The Cat" at the local drive-in; it as a double feature with "Heavy Traffic" I don't think they knew what kind of movie's they were, but we all had a great time.
"Harley Quinn" TV Show? Happy Tree Friends? C'mon Guys!🤦♀️
When talking about “Space Ghost”, you forgot to mention it’s spin-off, “The Brak Show”.
I love Brakk. Also there was blue submarine 2021? I have it somewhere in my DVD cabinet.
I remember watching space ghost coast to coast on TV as a kid and being very confused 😂
Moral Orel is so good. I wish there was more claymation these days, such a cool medium.
I loved Space Ghost Coast to Coast. Try finding the seasons past s1.... impossible
No Heavy Metal or Drawn Together.
Drawn together is the most sexualized, women degrading homofobic ,crazy and greedy show ever. And i love it couse of dynamic betwen characters.
@@tomkop213 yes! The day and ages before Americans as a whole became pussified and emasculated.
@@AaronFull1 where can I watch drawn together for free
I guess the researchers to this list never got introduced to the raunchy and twisted world of 'Drawn Together'.
The big question is; Are today’s young parents so pathetically dense, that they need to be told what their kids shouldn’t watch.?
The answer to your question is Yes, yes they are 😩
Um yes sadly parenting is not a thing anymore
Totally. I have seen too many examples. Just several this week alone.
Today’s parents? Our parents needed parental advisory stickers for music and M ratings for video games. Don’t forget the introduction of the PG-13 rating for movies.
I've seen Aeon Flux a long time ago, but never understood it. I've seen Cool World & Fritz the Cat also, they weren't bad.
Harley quinn the animated series
Very awesone show Harley is fine.
Nah, my kids can watch that.
I really enjoyed the edge to each character. A difference to watch and appreciate.
I wasn't sure how to feel about domestic Joker. I mean I hate him but Joker is supposed to be without morals.
space ghost was a fever dream for me until I watched it in full as an adult a couple years ago. I'd always fall asleep during Cartoon Cartoon Fridays and wakeup with this on.
I remember Cool World. It should have been given the rated "R" rating.
Most people who've seen it feel the same way.
yeah though the one they have as Cool World is not Cool World and instead Who Framed Roger Rabbit
@@shaneedwards596 You mean it comes across as a copy of "Roger Rabbit?" I've heard that criticism about it before.
@@shaneedwards596 Oh.
Aeon flux and cool world are the best for me.well i was a kid back then.these adult type animations are a bit hard to find available on televisions before...
I'm surprised that Heavy Metal didn't make the list
*Video mentions Aeon Flux*
Me: 'Violently flashes back to the insult that is the live action movie'
*cradles self* 'It was just a bad dream. Just a nightmare. There is no Aeon Flux live action movie.'
You can argue batman the animated series. Batman would save 2 people and kill like 10 lol
Been watching some of this show with my younger brothers and surprised how this show is a bit more mature than I would've thought.
Don't forget Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, Wizards, American Pop, Fantastic Planet, Spawn TAS, recent DC animation, The Maxx, Hey Good Looking, Bojack Horseman, Duckman, Watership Down, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Wicked City, Fist of the North Star, Perfect Blue, Princess Mononoke etc.
I'm really glad Stripperelle (still weird for me to type it in this comment) wasn't part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
That would've been abit weird.
Just imagibe the avengers recruiting Stripperelle in to the team
@@pedroguerrero3862 I rather not imagine!
@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941 I would bet everyone would be embarrassed by Stripperelle clothes although Tony would be flirting with her
@@pedroguerrero3862 Isn't he already married to someone else??
I think with all the suggestions from all the people you could easily make a part 2 and 3 of this topic. lol
Rock & Rule and Heavy Metal neither one is really for kids though I did enjoy them when I was younger.
I grew up with those! Don't forget The Wall, Watership Down, Ninja Scroll, Spawn and all
Genndy Tartakovsky's "Primal"? (Its a masterpiece btw).
I agree, though he meant it for Adults, most of these weren't. Except for Fritz(and Cool World) which started as an adult comic before the movie. I disagree with Samurai Jack and Moral Orel, we appear to be making comics and animated movies too childish now. even Japan has fallen into this.
Excellent series
What about the Maxx? It had the darkest tone I've ever seen in a cartoon and was very creepy I absolutely loved it and still revisit it on a regular basis
