Stories of martyrdom break me on a level that nothing else seems to. I believe it's is because it shines a harsh light on my own cowardice. I would jump in front of a bullet for my wife, but I struggle to have such confidence that I would carry a cross towards certain death.
Side note: knowing my own temperament, I believe I'd have been on the die of taking up arms. Fortunately, I don't believe we would be judged necessarily on which we chose but rather the motives behind our choice. I don't believe we have to be perfect, only righteous.

What John is saying around 17:40 rings true for me and I think about the battle of Helm’s Deep, where Legolas tells Aragorn “they’re all going to die!” and Aragorn says that he’ll die as one of them. Poignant. And, I think, all of us know instinctively that Aragorn’s commitment to fight the impossible battle is the right thing.

The examples he uses from The Mission certainly are Roman Catholic. It would be interesting if he talked, too, about Protestant martyrs, Eastern Orthodox martyrs, the martyrs from before the Great Schism.... What appreciated here was John's ability to see that real martyrdom is not passive defeat but courageous self-offering. All the great martyrs were formed, developed, and equipped for this courageous service as much as those trained to justly apply lethal force with weapons. Christian martyrdom is a bloody business and the farthest thing possible from fearful avoidance of deadly conflict. This is the first time I've heard anyone in the prepper/self-sufficiency/weapons training community who has ever articulated a clear and faithful understanding of this. No facile claim that being trained in the use of lethal force requires its use in every case. Christ and His justice might faithfully require a different witness. This is extremely helpful for me as a sacramental Christian and a man growing in capacity to fight and protect. I'm curious which martyrs you find embody the strength John is talking about. @@Hunterr8

Knowing "Why" you fight informs "How" you fight, but neither of these depend upon (or determine) whether you will be victorious. Plus, how often in history have people known whether they would win? Far too many David v Goliath battles to depend on that. And if you are a Christian, you merely have to do what God leads you to do. And that may include getting out of that mission in the first place (or not). God is a Challenger.

I’m happy you watched this movie. Very great Christian film that doesn’t end happily from a worldly perspective but from a Heavenly perspective, many saints were made through the honor of martyrdom. If you get the chance I’d recommend “Paul: Apostle of Christ” as you mentioned in this movie many Christians were killed by the Romans and this movie has the same question you are posing in this video but has a very clear answer.

Obedience to the Holy Spirit is the key. A secular movie cannot understand this theology and so they are left without a resolution to the story because they dont have one for themselves.
God gives the meaning to our actions . Great discussion

Since I moved from California to South America I guess I’m like the kids paddling up river heading back to the jungle. Still pray every day for the nation I served.

If someone is specifically coming for us because of our faith, I would lean on the example set by the disciples. They did not fight their way out of their situation, but rather did their best to spread the Good News with the time they were allotted. If a government or group is engaging in general tyranny, then I think it can be appropriate to resist with force for the good of your community and your family.

One thing that's worth considering is the Magdeburg Confession. It definitely has bearing here, especially considering it's a treatise on Christian Civil Disobedience.

Praise Christ for the beautiful sacrifice He made!👑 The truth is, Jesus in his supernatural wisdom knew only his death, which served as our salvation and sanctification, would as spread the gospel much further than if he took up the sword. How great is Our God! Worthy is the lamb!

    Very good.
    Luk 22:36
"Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." Could you expand on this?

Can I ask you for a short video on how to get in contact with loved ones and friends if we are away from home when a societal collapse happens? If there would be no communications infrastructure and we want to warn them not to shoot when getting close or not able to get home?
