I'd call being a slave owner in a time where abolitionism was a thing a bit more than merely "not being perfect"
“It’s better to die on our feet, rather than live on our knees”
A quote that goes perfect with this scene. Some people question why the Pirates even bothered fighting. That is why.
They are not the Athenians being led by Themistocles from rise of an empire brother 😂😂😂
Tetsuya 11 I never said they were brother 😂😂😂
Yup, I just recognized the quotation and I remembered it was from 300 part 2 😁😁😁
In this case they could either die on their feet or die on your knees, Beckett wasn't giving them another option
There is no more dangerous enemy than one with nothing to lose
It sounds similar to Emiliano Zapata's popular phrase: Prefiero morir de pie que vivir de rodillas ("I prefer to die standing up than live on my knees")
"THE WINDS ON OUR SIDE BOYS, THATS ALL WE NEED!"
I don't know why, but Gib's words, combined with the cheers that came after, made this one of my favourite movie moments ever.

Elizebeth Swann is an example of an actually great female character. why? Because she wasn't written as a "strong female character". She was just a strong character who happened to be female. She isnt an uber over powered badass with zero character flaws like Rey or Captain Marvel. She actually has an arc/character development throught the trilogy. She grows from a sheltered upper class woman who yearned for adventure into a strong, capable leader and the pirate king through hardships as well as the deaths of several loved ones. excellent
Exactly!
Well put! I'm sick of this idea that strong women don't have flaws. XENA had flaws, Sailor Moon had flaws, all the women I grew up idolizing had/have flaws and we saw them work through their issues. I'm also sick of this idea that my being a woman means I NEED to see perfect women on screen doing impossible, stupid shit and "being better than the boys" but also "so quirky and randum xD" is all I fucking get? Fuck that, I'll take Ivy from Soul Caliber and Mileena from Soul Caliber any day over Captain Flatass and Mary Rey. Like shit, it's like the screenwriters decided to unearth their terrible fanfiction from 20 years ago, change a few things and act like it's just as good when it's TERRIBLE

So uhhhhhhhhhhh am I the only one who remembers two movies earlier when this same group of "honorable" pirates were killing Elizabeth's townsfolk and threatening to gang-rape her? I mean, right?
Yup and she had charisma. At the end of the day, pirates are suckers for charisma

LSnnow I agree 101%. Of all the action films I've seen, the one character that immediately pops into my mind is Elizabeth Swann. Keira Knightley played her accurately - as an energetic, feisty woman who refuses to sit back and drink tea. No, she'd rather sail the Seven Seas and scare the crap out of PIRATES for crissakes even if it gave her old man a heart attack! When someone says the words "lucky bastard" I think about Will Turner and Elizabeth! I still consider this series among Keira's best performances although The Duchess comes very close.

When Gibbs says "the winds on our side boys, that's all we need!" And the pirates start cheering, and that amazing score plays, I literally almost cried. It's so beautiful. Screw it; the malestrom is the best cinematic battle since the black gate, and I will send anyone who tries to fight me on that to the locker.
This is one of the best movie series of all time.
The internet is full of enlightened smartasses that can only appreciate the highest quality of the art of cinema, but in reality, we watch movies to be entertained.
Not many are as entertaining as The Pirates of the Caribbean.
Gibb's, "MAELSTROM!" is one of the great one liners from the series too.

God Elizabeth's development as a character from Curse of the Black Pearl is fucking incredible. She goes from a curious govenor's daughter about pirates to the fucking KING of the the Bretheren Court. I personally think they made a huge mistake in not trying to keep Kiera Knightley on the cast. I love Elizabeth and it would've been amazing to see her character as full on pirate in the new movies..
The only part I don't like about Elisabeth is when she leaves Jack to the Kraken
+Leland211st but she only did that because she had to to save everyone else
+Nathan Schaefer still was kind of a dick move though
Yep! She goes on an amazing hero's journey. I legit think she's the main character because she transforms so much . Yes, Jack, Barbossa and Will are awesome, but they don't change nearly as much as Liz does.
Nathan Schaefer who said she won't appear In a future movie
Elizabeth transformed more than any other character in the series. In the first one she could barely handle herself, in the second one she became more daring and brash especially in the end when she went through a huge evolution by chaining Jack to the Pearl, just to show how much piracy was rubbing off on her, and in the third one karma got back at her in the harshest way possible. Her father died, then Norrington, then at the end the last person on Earth she cared about died, that of course being Will. Even when he returned to life, they were still only allowed to see one another for one day every ten years. By then Elizabeth was a hardened, cold individual who didn't have much to live for. Then she had her son, and the warmth in her heart returned to her mind and she finally went back to normal. Not enough people appreciate Elizabeth's character development, it was beautiful storytelling...
Wait a minute, when did she have a child?
You didn't see the post-credits scene?
There's a post-credits scene?
In all four movies.
Draco wolf In the first it's the monkey grabbing a coin of aztec gold
In the second it's the prison dog as the new cannibal chief.
In the third it's Elizabeth with her son
And in the fourth it's Blackbeard's voodoo doll of Jack being found by Angelica.
Hope this helped :)

The wind decided lots of naval battles with sails
The type of ships of the era could not sail very well into the wind. The ships which were upwind had the advantage. The trick is to stay up wind of your enemy. You sail downwind on your enemy, fire a few shots, then sail back upwind until you can turn around and make another run. In this way, your enemy will not have very many chances to fire at you.

+7thlittleleopard Which probably a reason why Kiera Knightley was never interested in returning to do more films. 1) Because they wrapped her story up too neatly and 2) Knightley is a huge feminist and reducing the pirate king to a simple wife waiting for her husband to come back is a bit insulting. That was never Elizabeth's character. She always wanted adventure. Orlando felt the same about number one... until his money started drying up lol

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I remember the other Pirate Ships didn't do jackshit in the following battle.
I'm sure they were doing something off-screen, but the movie was already rather long that I doubt the director could do anything but focus mainly on the Blak Pearl and Flying Dutchman alone.
kuribayashi84 no, the only ones fighting were the pearl and the dutchman, the east west company didnt fight with the others pirates, then the dutchman and the pearl destroy the endeavour. that were the only fights.
kuribayashi84 They started retreating after they saw the Endeavor get destroyed.
marlvr m
Blackrew
Both are right. The EIC sends out the Dutchman thinking its invulnerable, whilst the Black Pearl goes in since they've had brushes with it before. Neither side are particularly willing to go into the Maelstrom either, leaving only the two flagships to fight.
A few shots show the Pirate Fleet and the Armada sitting in the background simply watching. When the Endeavour is destroyed by both the Pearl and Dutchman, the rest of the Armada is shown to scatter and run since they've lost their leader and their best warships (against all odds, too).
I think if it weren't for the Maelstrom, the rest of the ships probably would have moved in.
angryboy2k9 The EIC fleet retreating always bothered me, despite the loss of their flagship and the dutchmen they still could have torn through the pirates' dozen or so ships with ease.
I realized that the brethren court include other different races from 7 continent on earth. The pirates are really inclusive.
Can we just take a minute to talk about how Elizabeth was one of the main focuses of this franchise, if not THE MAIN FOCUS? This awe-inspiring scene, and every scene she is in until the end of the film, shows how far she has come since the first film.
She started out as the governors daughter. When she was a girl, she rescued a boy who was drowning in the water half-dead. She discovered he was a pirate and was kidnapped eight years later by the pirates that were hunting HIM. This boy, now a man, came to her rescue and they fell in love. Then, their marriage was halted because of their involvement in freeing Jack Sparrow. She went on the run, became a pirate herself and soon after was almost killed when the 'Black Pearl' was attacked by the Kraken! She left Jack to die to save everyone else and had to live with that guilt even after they rescued him from Davy Jones Locker. She LOST HER FATHER and then found out her old flame has some involvement in her father's death. That old flame then came to rescue her when she was captured again, and gave his life to help her escape. Soon after she was elected Pirate King, and single-handedly put in charge of leading the Pirate Brethren to war with Beckett and Davy Jones. During the battle the man she loved more than anything was killed, mere minutes after they marry during the battle! He's resurrected as the new captain of the Flying Dutchman, and now they can only be together one day every ten years! Captain Jack Sparrow may have been the main character, but Elizabeth Swann was the focus of the entire story. And this pivotal scene, where she rallies a bunch of frightened bilge rats to stand up and fight for their freedom, their way of life... This is the moment she takes center-stage as the ultimate hero of story.
LOVE LIVE THE PIRATE KING! LONG LIVE CAPTAIN ELIZABETH SWANN!

Don't worry. It's my favorite franchise.
I like how Elizabeth reuses the sweat of our brow and strength of our backs line from Barbossa during the Brethren Court
A bit of background:
Besides the "ohhh they are bigger in numbers and cannons" the reason why any sailor worth its salt would run from that fight is that pirate ships were smaller, faster agile ships loaded to the brimm of cabbons and men with weapons.
Warships from any navy were slower but equally armed fortresses.
In open waters the more manuverable pirate ship could be able to outmanuver the large ships (frigates and man o wars) and thus come out victoruous) they also used their speed and suprise to their advantage. They'd get close with a false flag (english, spanish, french, portuguese, whatever suited them) and their men hidden, extra cannons hidden and so on.
Once they got closer their drop all pretenses and hoist the colors. By that point the victim was taken by surprise and without any preparation.
Also they'd rarely fight armed ships.
That being said, frigates and man o war's were built and meant for formation and wars. They were meant to be able to take and deal tons of damage quickly and stay a float.
So, here you have a smaller armada consisting of quick and manuverable meant for 1 v 1 surprise attacks in open water ships fighting in close formation against a large armada of ships meant for close ranks and huge naval warfare scenarios.
Basically they got everything against them.
It be like fighting tanks with ak47s.
Sure, ak47s are deadly in a 1 v 1 and in ambushes, but they are wholy innadequate for fighting tanks.
This exact scenario is why modern pirates use small fishing boats filled with rifles and RPGs, they get closer to cargo ships until they drop all pretenses
Now, a fleet of somali pirates may be a fiercesome enemy against a few cargo vessels, but against a state's navy? Absolutely no match
But it wasn't a fight they thought they could win.
It was a stand.
Hoisting the colors, in this scene, meant, they had rejected the offer to surrender .
@@MrYfrank14 i know... But what comes after rejecting the surrender? A fight.
"A stand" means that you're standing up to fight for something.
I know its a fight they know they couldnt win, and the reason they couldnt win is this
I watched this scene so many times, can't even count it, and it still gives me goose bumbles. *dying*
Me too! That's Called good acting. Lol!
This speech is one of the many reasons why I love Elisabeth Swann.
This is how you do strong female characters the last jedi.
HEAR! HEAR!
When I first saw this movie, I wanted to freakin' hoist some colors my damn self. Sent chills up my spine.
I hope to see some of these pirate lords in the upcoming movies. Such interesting looking characters, yet we barely know anything about them
There is actually a book series that goes through Jack vs each one
yes in this they really served as centerpieces. theres a backstory to teir backgrounds on the second dvd disc of at worlds end. best summer film of 2007. so good its depressing when it came to an end.
That speech makes me shiver in the most joyful of ways. A most overwhelming, powerful and of course beautiful speech indeed.
nice ace pfp
I got tears in my eyes and shivers down my spine everytime i watch this scene
Who else screamed "hoist the colors" in the theaters?
This just makes me downright mad that she's not going to be in Pirates 5, who's with me
Kevin Carlock aye
Kevin Carlock Fo' sure homie
Aye.
Michael Fawcett She adds so much to the story, it's going to be so much less without her...
Kevin Carlock Can't argue with that.
I got hard chills from this scene.
The voice crack make it so much better...
"And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons, they will hear the ring of our swords and THEY WILL KNOW WHAT WE CAN DO!" that bit of the speech gives me chills
FOR THOSE ASKING! THE MUSIC IS "What Shall We Die For?"
YOU'RE WELCOME ! CHEERS
This scene alone towers over that pitiful fourth film we got. I understand if Knightly didn't want to return but damn, think how great it would've been to see her return as Pirate King ruling Shipwreck Cove and setting out on new adventures? The growth in her character from the first film for a heroine is rare to see. Personally, I feel the franchise should've stopped at Pirates 3. The fourth film suffered heavily without the original cast and the new story line we got and the substitute characters were extremely bland. Now that its confirmed Bloom's returning for Pirates 5 the story only fills 2/3 complete. The entire Pirate franchise (in my opinion) was Elizabeth, Will and Jack and their adventures together. Their characters made the story what it was. And their stories would've had a lot more to tell in this new fifth instalment. Obviously Elizabeth is going to have to be mentioned in Pirates 5 lets just hope the writers don't completely butcher her character by giving us some bullshit excuse as to why she's not there. I hope (and its blind hope really) that they name her but not only once, I just want a full explanation of what happened to the Pirate King, ruler of the Seven Seas, a free and powerful woman, a strong mother, and a pirate. Her character deserves that.
I knowwwww. To be honest they made the movie. I mean, I understand Jack mainly does. But the character development through three movies was so fantastic for her and Will becoming pirates. So much that FOY just wasn't as good as it could have been with them as well on the ship with jack or in his fleet. I hate that they left and killed the story
+Chelsea Jessick I'm glad you agree. It seems to be an occurring theme in long running/successful movie franchises where they write out or replace the main characters in the story which has the potential to continue. I don't know if you familiar with the Underworld franchise? but they seem to being doing the exact same thing in the upcoming Underworld 5 where it looks like some of the original characters won't be involved in the new storyline therefore, they story we as fans knew of from the beginning won't have a proper conclusion as the characters we know of won't be there to end it. The exact same thing happened to Pirates, sadly.
+Saoirse Kavanagh whatttt? Like Kate beckinsale won't be in it?? That's so stupid. Hollywood needs to stop ruining the movies for us.
+Chelsea Jessick There was much speculation and rumours that Beckinsale wouldn't return but thankfully she is. But the character of Michael (from Underworld 1 & 2) played by Scott Speedman has not signed on for the upcoming film as well as India Eisley (from Underworld 4) who played Eve their daughter, which is unfortunate as her story as well as Michael's had been left on a massive cliff hanger. It was seriously implied from the ending of Underworld 4 that they would be involved in the next installment, but its very uncertain at this time.
+Saoirse Kavanagh Perhaps by that time, the golden age of piracy was dwindling.
Each time I watch this, it always gives me goosebumps. This is beyond amazing.
You are sitting comfortably on the deck of the HMS Endeavor, just a few feet from the mighty Captain, Lord Cutler Beckett. You look beside you, behind you. . .& smirk confidently, arrogantly. . .as you realize your team outnumbers the Pirate Armada approximately 300 of your ships to 10 of theirs. Your confidence hits another lofty tier as you recognize the Flying Dutchman out front, ready to lead your attack. You know, for an absolute certainty, that the men aboard those pirate ships are dejected, broken, terrified of what they understand they will experience in mere moments. . .if they don’t surrender. . .& QUICKLY! You hear your fellow crew-mates laughing & joking with one another, as are the crews of the other 300 ships.
. . . . .then you hear a faint, indistinguishable “yell” from what seems to be about 30 people or so. No one else on your side even flinches as they were laughing & joking so energetically, they probably didn’t hear it. A few moments later, you hear an unmistakably-dark, heavy, powerfully-ferocious ‘Battle Cry’! Your men’s eyes widen in shock as they look around themselves & across the seas for where that sound could have come from! They drop drinking glasses, stumble over one another & look, confused, out across at the Pirate Armada. The Battle Cry sounds again, even louder. . .and you & your crew feel a paralyzing chill go down your backs. . .as you watch the colors being hoisted.
Here they come. . .
2:13 lol Did anybody else expect that lady to scream and go crazy??
Yeah but that was not the scene in which she screams
Elizabeth Swann:
- amazing story
- great character development
- gorgeous
- likable
POTC. One of many movies to define a generation!!!! HOIST THE COLORS!!!!
This made me remember how good these movies really are. Elizabeth’s character arc is spectacular
I love this scene! HOIST THE COLOURS!
That was a good speech, it was honest, she did not promise them victory, or that they will live, or anything that she could not deliver.
She promised them that they go out like heroes.
Fighting for freedom is always worth every effort. All the more reasons why I did find pirates fascinating. They weren’t always about rum, treasure, and all that. They wanted to be truly free from the grip of anyone controlling.
Looking at that now, makes me wish we had that kind of freedom today.
Elizabeth is an example of an amazing female character done right!
Aye
No, its all the same heroine always made to be "stronger" in every movies
@@superpel3928 Isn't that true for everyone mate!? Learning from failures and becoming 'stronger'.
I want an Elizabeth Swann. Where do you get one of those?
Captain Jack Sparrow lol
Tortuga?
Tortuga!
Captain Jack Sparrow the best female captain ever
I have a motherland and can offer some of that
1:54 Barbossa's like 'Damn it' xD
Goosebumps all the way. I love Elizabeth she's amazing 🖤
This is by far the best scene of the movie
One of, if not the most powerful scenes in the entire series. Probably my favourite scene too, despite the lack of Jack.
This speech gives me the shivers.
All those flaga going up, the music, and the cheers will always give me goosebumps.
It's funny how the captions vary in meaning lmao.
Elizabeth: Hoist the colours
William: Waste the colours
That one eye guy: What's the colours
And his partner: Oyster colours
Elizabeth Swann for President!
Help I can’t stop watching this scene
Me too
This scene gives me major chills every single time. The first three movies will live in my heart forever ❤️
Kiera Knightley is love 😍. Miss Elizabeth so much. I love that she was still a cute and innocent girl when she said " Hoist the colours" first time.
