If it’s approaching Lisboa brilliance then count me in. (By the way Lisboa is really not so complicated. Sure, you need to plan ahead for key actions but that’s more a checklist challenge than a mathematically confusing conundrum)
This is the Essen must-buy for me. I have seen both your runthrough as Jon Gets Games, and it looks like a lot of fun. I love Barrrage and this seems up that same alley
Preordered the next reprint together with everything released for it so far, from their site and eagerly looking forward to getting it this november. Still not a top 100 game on bgg thou. I wonder if that's related to it being too heavy and a lack of big channel coverage for the expansion and in general. But I bet it will reach that spot next year considering how much content they are producing for it and how much of a hit it is. Heck they even accidentially leaked the next expansion already. It sounds like Turczi just think the system is too much fun to build new content around.
I held off on preordering this even though I love Simone’s designs. I didn’t love the interaction in brass. My favorite thing about it was the card play. Curious if your runthrough will change my mind, if the heaviness comes from the decision space or just complexity. Lisboa was too much with the menu sized cheat sheet.
I know the Brass comparisons have been made before but it really does seem to mimic many of the Brass core mechanics. Would that be fair to say and if so, which would you prefer of the two, Brass or Nucleum?
i would be shocked if the developers didn't take inspiration from brass! i'm pretty sure it's a quote from one of the designers (dave) that this is "brass meets barrage". as for which one i'd play, i really like the 'action domino' stuff in nucleum... even more than the multi-use cards from brass, but i like the leaner ruleset of brass. so it'd be a tough call. nucleum if i'm in the headspace for a heavier more complex game, brass if not i guess :)
@@rahdo thanks Richard. And as always thank you for you fantastic videos. If ever I want to get nostalgic about my board gaming journey I always go back to your Malta period. Have a great one.
Crystal Palace is a heavy(ish) game that has a lot of small boards instead of one giant one, letting you lay them out as needed (though that game is probably a bit too... "interactive" for you and Jen).
sadly i haven't played books of time, they never sent me a review copy. i'm trying to get one though, so ask me again at the end of the year in my preliminary top10 video! :)
not at all! i need to go back and look at barrage again because other than the "providing power" subject matter, i don't see much overlap at all, so i'm not sure why it keeps getting compared to barrage. the only "mean" thing in this game is "oh, you powered that city that i was just about to power" kind of stuff. i'd say overall it's pretty carebear friendly, which barrage definitely was not! :)

Nucleum and invention will be my 2024 board game purchases. Thank you for your videos.
good choices! :)
Oops.... That reference to Heavy Cardboard aged very soon!! You should check out their discussion.... They've categorically rejected it!!
wow that's a surprise!

Barrage is my favorite game, so this is right up my alley. Ordered it and promos

I am very excited for this one!

yup i always wanted to give that one a try except for the 'interactivity' :)
I really didn't find it mean, you should give it a go @rahdo!
For me: Crystal Palace is a family game 😂
From Boards and Dice 2023 releases ... Barcelona, Books of Time, Nucleum... what is your rate between them?
sadly i haven't played books of time, they never sent me a review copy. i'm trying to get one though, so ask me again at the end of the year in my preliminary top10 video! :)
Ok. I will, also i will ask to send you one copy....
they said they were going to send me a copy a month ago, but it never arrived. if you've got some pull that would be great :)
Sure thing!
This kind of looks like Brass Birmingham: Alt-history/scifi edition.
Did you find it too mean, at all? Sort of à la Barrage?

@Rahdo - how big is your table?
65 x 39"
But will it make its way into your 2023 Top 10? :D
probably not this time, but it will make a bunch of other folks i'm confident! our brains aren't as big as they used to be it seems :)
