I am an drummer in an up and coming band from Scotland even with four years behind the kit I'm still watching lesson tutorials like this to stay sharp.
I have an Emo girl as a friend and she recently sent me her Spotify playlist as I was looking for new material so here I am wanting to learn the core mechanics of punk drumming.
DD DRUMS hey wanted to reply on this thread before I get attacked again by some YT troller haha But yeah I’ve been making a lot of progress, all Beats 1, 2, and 3 you showed have helped me a lot and thanks for breaking it down Don’t want ya to think I was being a smart ass about asking about d beat, when I heard Josie by Blink it kinda sounded like the D Beat pattern does so that’s why I asked Check out Discharge or Varukers (early UK hardcore punk bands) and Skitsystem (Swedish d beat punk) But yeah I practice your tutorial everyday so thanks again pal!!
@@unknownanimation9904 good point. Although from a different perspective electric gives you more creative freedom. I love being able to connect mine right to midi and I have an unlimited number of sounds I can assign to each pad. I can also stay up all night playing while my gf is sleeping. But from a true drummer’s standpoint I fully agree with you. It feels so good to play an acoustic. Every drummer should experience it.
Thank you for the video! I’m a guitarist and working on a solo record, where I do all instruments! Drums have been the most difficult for me. I can do easy Pink Floyd style drumming, but I want to throw some punk in there too! I’m trying to be as prolific as possible! Thank you again! This video helped a lot!
Hi Martha... These are my favorite comments to get.... I love the fact that the lesson made an impact with you... I will try to make the lessons in future like I did this one... Bite size pieces... Keep up the great work Martha...
@@rockyvsrambo82 Finally I understand these two last beats, most of the punk drummers simply know how to play it full speed but don't seem to be able to break it apart or to slow it down. THANK YOU!
thank you so much! I didn't know the first one was punk, I really like it for the simplicity of it but people always told me punk needed to have 2 kicks at 3 and it made me really confused
For ages I’ve been trying to get that sliding technique down on the right foot for the bass drum gallop. I’ve been in punk bands with people who can do it but I just can’t figure out how to get the right bounce. Any pointers for that?
Hey there... I have a lesson that helps build technique, control and speed for the bass drum... ruclips.net/video/19uvDUvCciE/видео.html Also, I would use the metronome on this beat... Start slowly... Spend 2-3 minutes on each tempo... Speed the tempo up 5-10 bpm... You will eventually reach a ceiling, where you cant go any faster as things start to fall apart... Practice a little slower than this tempo... Spend a fair bit of time there at this tempo... Eventually, your ceiling will get higher...
Hi Bob... Hope your doin well man... Okay, here are some factors that I use to get a punchy bass drum sound... 1) The skin I use is an Evans Emad 2... 2) Tune it pretty deep. Not trying to tighten the bass skin much at all, rather keep it fairly loose... But still try and get each lug even tension. And enough tension that there are no 'wrinkles' in the skin. 3) Put pillow in drum. 4) When I mic up the bass drum drum, the mic is inside the drum close to and facing the point of attack. 5) I play heel up, thus getting more volume and attack. 6) Post recording, I use eq and compression on the bass drum too... Good Luck and Keep up the Great work Bob
I'm absolutely not a drummer. I have been playing for a couple of years because I love it and it allows me to do my own demos, but it definitely isn't my main instrument. I can play stuff that is way more complex (well nothing too great either :p) than that last punk rock beat. However, I have a hard time playing that specific beat at let's say 150 and just gradually augmenting the tempo is not really working. Would you have any advice whether it's on video form or just a message or whatever? I'd appreciate so much. Thanks for your videos!
Its probably got to do with the bass drum technique... Practise your bass drum technique... I have done a video for this... ruclips.net/video/19uvDUvCciE/видео.html All the best!
Hello... The counting is something I would do when learning the beat and playing it slow... A bit like training wheels on a bike for beginners... But as your muscle memory kicks in you can let go of the counting... I especially like to use the metronome to keep track of the speed changes I am making. If I can do 80 bpm okay, next step will be 90 bpm, then 100, then 110 and so on. One mistake us drummers can make is to go from 80 to 180. Hope this helps.

Electric drums r nice, but nothing beats the sound of acoustic drums.

How do you get such a punchy bass drum? I usually play jazz so I have my whole kit adjusted for it and I’m not sure what to do for the bass drum.

I don’t understand how you make it faster, do you still do the 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and count just as fast as you can?
Hello... The counting is something I would do when learning the beat and playing it slow... A bit like training wheels on a bike for beginners... Is number two or three the d beat
Do you mean down beat?
DD DRUMS no I mean like an actual “d beat” type of drum pattern discharge is notorious for inventing
@@arwaldc9056 cool... Not really sure actually... But these 3 beats are super popular in the world of punk rock...

The problem with punk rock is that it’s so fast!!!
Hi Otavio... Yes, you are right... Its very fast... Just start slow and build from there...
Not necessarily, there is a lot of mid-tempo in 77 punk, Oi!, artpunk, postpunk and powerpop. Hardcore punk is usually pretty fast!

Ok
I feel really stupid I can’t play the last one
Don't feel stupid. It can be a little tricky for the bass drum to play those quick doubles... Give it time... You will get there...
No D-Beat?!
Yes I know the D beat... Perhaps I will do a video on the D beat... Keep rocking!
