    One of the things I really love about D-beat is that it’s punk’s way of incorporating that same mother rhythm that is the basis for so much Afro-Latin music... groups of 3 + 3 + 2 felt like ONE and two AND three and FOUR and. Americans prob recognize it most as Dancehall reggae, reggaeton, or the basic rhythm in most of Ed Sheehan’s recent hits lol. But that rhythm can be found everywhere, and prob for at least a few centuries now. The closest comparison to D-Beat is the Brazilian version called Baiõ, but they use hihat chicks instead of snare, and the d-beat moves the last kick one note earlier so it syncopates the against the snare instead of landing with the snare/chick/whatever on beat 4. Now the snare + cymbal combo is giving us the big emphasis on 4, which is also the only time snare and cymbal play together in the version you’re doing here. But if you took out the first snare hit, you’d almost have a super-fast dancehall beat

    • @PrettyCoolDrumShow
      @PrettyCoolDrumShow  3 года назад +15

      Super interesting! And super important to remember where the influence really came from. A lot of people forget including myself, how music is all connected even though it may not seem like it sometimes with all the sub genres. I guess it’s especially Americans who think they invented everything haha

    There's just something about the d-beat that's so catchy and powerful. I've always felt its that pause between the 2nd and 3rd bass hit that give it this kind of rolling forward feeling. Makes the music have this forward momentum that other drum beats just don't do in the same way.

    • @PrettyCoolDrumShow
      @PrettyCoolDrumShow  3 года назад +2

      Yeah I was curious if anyone was going to mention that, Ive always thought of them as more d-beat/crusty leaning than hardcore leaning but I can see why people don’t

    • @robertgoyette5863
      @robertgoyette5863 3 года назад +2

      @@PrettyCoolDrumShow i mean it really doesnt matter imo haha. when alot of those bands started pulling more of the dbeat/crust influence back into hardcore (cursed, converge, martyrdod, backstabbers inc etc) no one really talked about it. At the time crust/dbeat was almost more of an aesthetic thing more than having to do w/ music. Im just glad people now are into good bands.

    • @Fasistoktonos_
      @Fasistoktonos_ 2 года назад

      Martyrdöd are a "d beat band". Almost all of their tracks feature that rhythm. If not all. Yes they are melodic, but still. Also, there is a thin line between hardcore punk/crust/d-beat/käng etc. Even crust is basically hardcore punk. This is definitely the safest term to use. Also, I don't know if you have them in your playlist because it won't open, but you should definitely listen to Skitsystem from Gothenburg Sweden. Adrian Erlandsson from At the Gates and Cradle of Filth used to play drums on them, and also Tomas Lindberg from At The Gates/Disfear etc. used to do vocals.

    • @Sergio-nb4hj
      @Sergio-nb4hj 2 года назад +1

      @@Fasistoktonos_ They're a band that play d-beats, but they do not belong to the genre named d-beat. The song structure and riffing style isn't there. For examples of d-beat, try Warcry, Disclose, Disaster, or any of the billion other bands that have "dis" in their name and yell "war bad"
      Martyrdöd are melodic/blackened/"neo" crust, and fuсking good at it too. Give them proper credit
