I've done a bunch more quotes for them so they must be happy. One job they wanted me to quote a bunch of work, but I told them to have maintenance clean out the existing ditch, and it solved their problem.
This is fascinating. Never realized how much damage water could do. I checked all my gutters and found one of those buried corrugated pipes that was overflowing like crazy at the edge of my garage. It was also running under my front walkway and terminating who knows where in the yard. I was able to disconnect and cut off the top and replace it with one of those flat drains they sell at Lowe’s. Luckily I’m on a small rise so it should drain well into the yard. Thank you!

Honesty and integrity is always the best option, we don’t do jobs with our excavator unless it’s going to be done right the first time, I would rather walk away from a job than not do it the right way! Nice work Sean

when that was uncovered it did look high to me as well, I was like "hmmm easiest solution is to just knock it down a layer of brick then that would fix that slope." and then you did, good work there to make sure it drains properly.

Beautiful work! As a consumer, I would rather that we discuss extra $$ to get the job done correctly, than to just have the contractor do exactly what was quoted but ultimately have the end product only half-work!

Being a long time New Jersey resident (and for the past few years, being a civil engineer who does site designs including drainage), it's weird how it seems every state has such drastically different inlets. NJ only has flat grates usually level with the ground, or for those along the curb, with a curb piece (but nowadays with smaller openings to prevent trash from going in). New England states tend to have only flat grates with rare curb openings (see also Post10) and the southern states have wide open holes like this (and I remember when I was young seeing a cat inside the curb-only opening at a rest area in Georgia).
Then you have PA. No retention ponds for most developments near creeks. They just dump it in the creek and let the unlucky folks downstream deal with the cheap fix.
Ive seen, worked with and for contractors that see what has been quoted won't work right, and they just do it as quoted. Luckily I worked for a general contractor for years who encouraged that the work is done right even if they lose a little profit. That just IS the right way to get jobs done. Obviously you negotiate the best you can, but leaving a job done right feels so much better than leaving one where you maximized profit. Kudos to you!
I agree! All of my guys feel free to question anything we are doing and use the best solution for the best results. If someone screws up a fitting or something, we just say it's their first day and grab another fitting.
Need to try seed and compost. Helps with the nutrients for the grass to grow and don’t have to worry about the straw being blown around or washing away

Not a massive job, but one that a little brain and a little brawn made elegant. The narrowing track capability on the Kubota is a great feature for tight spaces.
When trying to move the lid, would it not have been more prudent to re-extend the track basin giving you a larger footprint? (I ask cause I am actually curious I have never seen one with moving tracks before)
I notice the bottom of these large systems like in this video, are sometimes smooth with concrete that comes to the level of the pipe to prevent standing water inside the basin, other times they are open bottom to collect debris and silt, Do you have any insight on if when installing a basin we should smooth out the bottom with a bit of concrete to help with the velocity of flow decreasing turbulents? Perhaps the amount of fall is a factor here. I would appreciate a better understanding of when not to do smooth the bottoms and if its necessary on a yard drain or mini culvert. I have an 8" culvert In my yard with several 6" pipes and 4" pipes collecting surface water that then run into my 8" culvert which also has good fall and flows into a municipal 36" culvert. The system works great. I invested about 5k in time and materiels to construct this drainage system, I just am wondering if using a bit of concrete in my 12" and 18" and 20" basins might be a good idea to reduce turbulents and further reduce presence of standing water during the rainy season. The soil does percolate but it takes time depending on the water table. That is all in my backyard. My front yard system came with the house it never gets standing water in the basins because they were lined with concrete. Right now my backyard basins are dry and the water table is low but in the rainy season they do hold water. I am seriously considering putting concreter in the bottom of some of them to reduce turbulents Thanks,
If you're trying to move water then you want a smooth less turbulent pipe and basin. Usually during heavy rains you want the water to flow fast and not hang around, so it can accept more water and drain your yard.
This is what you are good at and you know what you are doing.. Not trying to sound rude, but you need to stay away from ponds, you took a beating on that in the comments.. When you are in your element you highly excel in it, I love that you go far beyond and do them right... I have been there when you quote a price for a job, then find out it requires a lot more work and will cost more.. I always stop and let them know, it's gonna cost more.. If they don't want to pay, I just do what I am paid for and let them know I will not be responsible for anything beyond that.. Job well done........ 10/10
Hmm, the concrete slopes slightly down from the catchbasin towards the ground, so the earth doesnt erode it away. Is there enough water turbulance to push the water into the catchbasin? Hope I got that right, Good way to deal with the hoa on the scope/financials.
Sean, Yes your machine was not powerful enough. Next time you want to take the cap off, get some PVC Pipes behind the basin and ROLL the cover off the top onto the pipes. Then it is a matter of pushing/rolling it back on when your done. 😁😁😁

I´d take any contractor that goes the extra mile like that, even if the price in the end get a bit higher, rather get it done properly from start, it will reduce the cost for you in the end if you need to remake the whole thing again instead and do what you should do from the start, that must cut the cost for the customer in the end I think

Not sure why you had to lower the brickwork, it worked before. It had a fall into the chamber, see 7:50. There also appears to be a ditch at the end of the fence. increasing the fall will increase the speed of the water which will increase scour. The gravel around the chamber openings would have been placed there to prevent scour and suppress weeds. The chamber was fairly sound (there may have been a couple of open perps in the brickwork but it is difficult to tell) so the small holes around were most likely caused by the settlement of the backfill to the hole that the chamber was built in. Your finished job looks good. But all that was needed was the stone replacing and the fence removed or replaced if the homeowner wanted to hide the cover.
It's working much better with the fall that it has now because the water flows directly i instead of slamming into the brick before making its way in. 👍
To cover yourself from under quoting, you should have written at thr bottom of your invoices and quotes "Errors and Omissions Accepted" which legally covers you from charging more
At the end of the day your reputation means more than a few bucks. You may have made a little less profit than you originally had planned, but the job was done correctly and will last. For all you know that HOA may call you again in 6 months or recommend you to other homeowners to do other work. I always made a point to either do the job right, or not do it at all. Some jobs you overbid, others you underbid. It all evens out in the end.

Great job Michele. I do that often with clogged corrugated pipes. If there's enough slope the water just sheds away.

I think pulling like I was it didn't matter. If I was swinging with a load the bigger footprint is better 👍

There shouldn't be any turbulence in the water. Rather gravity pulls the water along a smooth surface into the basin. 👍👍

There also appears to be a ditch at the end of the fence. increasing the fall will increase the speed of the water which will increase scour. The gravel around the chamber openings would have been placed there to prevent scour and suppress weeds. The chamber was fairly sound (there may have been a couple of open perps in the brickwork but it is difficult to tell) so the small holes around were most likely caused by the settlement of the backfill to the hole that the chamber was built in.
Your finished job looks good. But all that was needed was the stone replacing and the fence removed or replaced if the homeowner wanted to hide the cover.
It's working much better with the fall that it has now because the water flows directly i instead of slamming into the brick before making its way in. 👍
To cover yourself from under quoting, you should have written at thr bottom of your invoices and quotes "Errors and Omissions Accepted" which legally covers you from charging more
At the end of the day your reputation means more than a few bucks. You may have made a little less profit than you originally had planned, but the job was done correctly and will last. For all you know that HOA may call you again in 6 months or recommend you to other homeowners to do other work. I always made a point to either do the job right, or not do it at all. Some jobs you overbid, others you underbid. It all evens out in the end.
