Hi Marta! I'm so happy that you're covering Mexico. I liked the premiere up until the judging, Regina and Serena 100% should've been the BTM2 in my opinion. But the high placements we're all correct, congrats to Cristian! Two things: First, Lady Kero's concept of Muxe was actually one of the things my mom REALLY wanted to see represented on this season and she was SO excited when Kero walked out. As explained by my mom, Muxe is specifically referred to as a third gender within the Zapotec indigenous people, who are a BIG part of the culture within the state of Oaxaca. I also appreciated the juxtaposition of the bridal look, given how muxes are not traditionally allowed to marry in Mexico. Second, Margaret's critiques are definitley a product of Mexican pride, even if I didn't agree with her low placement at all. My mom explained to me how, in Mexico it is definitely looked down upon to speak of the country's faults, even in a comedic fashion. Even so, I still enjoyed Margaret's look and I just wish they had critiqued the actual outfit more, rather than just the message.
muchas gracias!!!! you see, I think there are a lot of ways artistically / conceptually to convey all that information about muxes down the runway. I understand what she was going for, but some props or performance would have made the info a lot more clear. She is talking about a muxe bride, but she doesn't tell me how she feels about muxes nor brides, if you know what I mean
Hi, Martha. I love your vids🥰. Thnx for reviewing DRMx.👏I'd like to add that Gala's entrance look is a reference to a controversy that happened a few yrs ago with her former drag duo partner Genesis Faux. Genesis publicly accused Gala of things like stealing money (even of being rac%st to her). The two of them have sorted things out since then, but Gala being a "thief" remains a running joke in drag circles in Mexico.
You’ve gone above and beyond with the references! Thank you so much, you spoil us. I knew you’d enjoy México, it’s so nice to see your spark back! Christian and Matraka are my faves! Can’t wait to enjoy this season with you!
I’m SO HAPPY you decided to cover this franchise!! You do have so much input to contribute as I learned so much from this video too! Cant wait for more ❤
I'm so glad you're reviewing this new franchise! I have spent a lot of time in Mexico (in fact, I'm in Mexico right now), and I think you nailed it--aside from the fact that, as someone else already pointed out, Zapotec is not really a region; it's an indigenous culture that has a third gender tradition called the muxe. I would say that the region (or state) where this tradition is found is really Oaxaca. As I understand it, historically, muxes haven't been able to marry, but nowadays, since Mexico does have marriage equality, I would think that muxes are allowed to marry. I love Margaret Y Ya. I know her from the first season of La Mas Draga. I don't object to drag that criticizes a place rather than celebrating it, but there's a lot to celebrate about Mexico City, so I can understand why some people were not happy with her look. I'm in Mexico City right now. Does it smell like poop? I don't think so. Maybe it does occasionally, but so do many cities around the world. There's a lot of controversy in Mexico City right now because so many American and European "digital nomads" have taken up residence here (I'm not one of them, by the way; I'm just visiting). But I don't think this city would be so attractive to digital nomads (and tourists) if it were as bad as Margaret Y Ya makes it seem. Speaking of La Mas Draga, I wrote an article on my Mexico-themed blog (quebuenaonda dot net) in which I point out all of the ways that La Mas Draga broke new ground before any Drag Race franchise did, including allowing AFAB queens and drag kings (though the drag kings have all been assigned male at birth). It still bugs me that we've seen no AFAB drag kings on any drag competition program (or at least not any that I've watched). I'm hoping that changes soon.
Muxe to my understanding since pre-Hispanic times is the term used for a third gender. Equal to men and women. Nevertheless they are a not allowed to get married. The strength of Lady Kero’s look not only lays in the representation in an international stage of this traditional roll but in reinterpretation of the muxe as a bride. Also muxes for their families are praised as caregivers for their elderly relatives and that is why Lady Kero mentioned the recent death of her mother in law. It was beautiful and heartfelt.
Hooray! More Marta Mamma! Thank you! Anyway, my favorites are Pixie Pixie and Matraxa and actually Pixie’s daughter Vermelia (sp?) because she looks like there are South Asian influences in her drag which is interesting to me. Also, about Valentina’s distant demeanor, I think that’s part of her Queen of delusion character-an unreal beauty who is perfect and frozen in that perfection. She doesn’t seem real because she isn’t. 🤣🤣. Still, she’s fantastic to watch.
Hey, girl! I thought you weren't gonna do any reviews for DR🇲🇽. I'm so glad you went for it! 👏👍 Welcome to the party! Lady Kero's dress did have a social message cuz the Muxes aren't traditionally allowed to marry, but equal marriage it's legal in Oaxaca since 2019, so technically they can marry but Zapotecs are very traditional driven, so they are still not allowed.
with the runway/maxi challenge, it’s sorta similar to how other shows like la mas draga have challenges that are just the runway presentation. i think they should have had them just do a mini challenge in their entrance looks and had the pñata looks as a second category. it really sucks that you can tell that those girls had those piñata looks in hopes of a runway 😭
I was familiar with Pixie Pixie from their other work 😜 but didn't know they did drag. Now I'm completely in love with the whole aesthetic! In fact, I really like all the contestants so far. They all have a very interesting take on drag. Oh, as for 'Trixie makeup' - I did that in the 90s based on people who did it in the 60s. I'm sure they based it on something earlier, like the 1920-30s! 🖤
The vamp style of silent film stars of the 1910s - early 1920s! Predates the flappers, but the styles also mixed in the 20s. There was also a lot of interested in ancient Egyptian at the time, more influence for heavy Kohl eyes.
Estoy emocionadísimo con esta temporada, tengo muchas ganas de ver a Matraka, es una de mis artistas drag favoritas del mundo un poco empatada con Tenderoni
in english matrakas have a boring name. it's literally just "noise makers" haha. they're usually used here (in the US) in like birthday/4th of july/new years parties
Cast is amazing and I found Valentina and Lolita enjoyable hosts. Judging was little off and lipsync was bad. Lack of maxi challenge was a little weird too. But overall i'd give DR mexico 8/10 after first episode
So far no one has commented on the irony of Valentina chastising queens for a lacklustre lip sync when she was eliminated for not knowing words 🥴😅 But, yes, it was a poor performance. I’m only just catching up with bingeing the whole season now, as I was suffering from a Drag Race overdose last year.
Pixie & Matraka are easily my top 2 just based off the first episode. They are both so amazing!
same!! I love christian too though... that BEAUTY...

@@MartaMamma Definitely get your point in regards to more clarity for sure.

Thank you for reviewing DR Mexico - it is off to an interesting start for sure.
I love drag that invokes emotion or makes you think. Perfection is not really something I look for in art.
