    OHMYGOD HEY!
Last night, Andrew Lloyd Webber's BAD CINDERELLA had its first preview on Broadway and the internet has been buzing in respones to a teaser clip of the show's title song, performed by its new leading lady Linedy Genao.
In today's latest installment of 'The Cinderella Saga', I'm reacting to this newly released clip as well as footage of the show's first Broadway curtain call to tak through changes, critical inferences and of course - that hairstyle.

@@cait812 I think when it comes to productions run by larger corporations (Disney, ALW's company, he may have had to remortgage his home to fund the original version of Cats but even back then his home was... basically a castle) - the moral greyness kinda goes both ways. Like, if you're at the top of the food chain, if you've got enough success going on that your multiple different ongoing productions have recovered after COVID and don't really need to worry, probably the people who oversee things could afford to not be so dogged in the pursuit of financial growth. They have reliable success, they know they're gonna keep making money, and all it would mean would be a slight reduction in the amount of profit they're bringing in in order to make some tickets cheaper, or similar measures aimed at making high-quality-produced theatre a bit more accessible. But companies will never properly commit to something like that where the goal is a fundamentally different one from the ideal of constant financial growth.
Like, sure, shareholders are a thing and whatever, but that in itself is kind of... morally grey? That the priority would be supplying rich people with more money over letting people access a creative work. Sorry for going off on one, I think something about the phrase you used made something click in my brain and I'm like... hang on, if morally grey is the line everyone uses for bootlegs, doesn't that deserve to apply to the particularly rampant capitalist production companies too? Like, I think the focus on the individual actions end of things is much easier because you kinda look at big companies and go 'well that's just how it is' so the fact that they are not exactly acting in a moral way either almost becomes invisible. So if everyone ignores the moral greyness of bootlegs, I think the moral greyness of the way large multi-production theatre companies are run is, probably the more ignored of the two honestly.

And regardless of any other reasons obviously the company behind producing and doing the show won't want bootlegs. We can't shit on them for that, of course you wouldn't want people illegally recording and taking your work. Most bootleg users probably wouldn't want strangers recording their work.

I don’t understand the new costuming in Bad Cinderella (the song lol) at ALL, it makes zero sense for the ensemble to be dressed in such a dark palette and in ways that are so similar to how cinderella is dressed unless they’re moving away from the whole ‘we don’t like her bc she’s different,’ which if they move away from that, a major plot point won’t make any sense?? I also still don’t like any of the lyric changes I’ve heard so far, especially considering it seems like they kept some of the more confounding lyrics in. I think the marketing this time around is much smarter but it’s still confusing to me demographic wise, the show still seems unsure of who its meant to attract as a target audience. In general I’m excited to hear more thoughts from you as this production goes on, especially if you do decide to watch it when you’re in nyc!! But then the press announcement came out. I was suddenly on the fence. With the release of the Bad Cinderella single as well.. they changes were so obvious. I mean, one of the biggest issues with this show's premise is that it has inflicted Cinderella with "I'm not like other girls." The original story doesn't really have that, and what can be read into it doesn't really hold up (imo) since the story was about a girl wanting to go to a dance and not be a servant in her own home. The antagonistic female relationships come from her stepmother and stepsisters who treat her like she's worthless and there aren't any other women in the story except the fairy godmother, who is clearly taking the surrogate mother role for Cinderella. It wasn't ever a story about how certain women will excel if only in very specific circumstances.

i haven't really seen enough of the West End or the Broadway version of the musical, but personally I really miss goth Cinderella. Besides Carrie being in it, the costume and changes they made to what's usually known as Cinderella's style made me pay attention to it in the first place. Based on what bits I saw of the plot, changing Cinderella's style from pretty much Goth to this new style which is a lot more similar to the style of the townsfolk, especially with the outfit she seems to be wearing in the end, it's like they're missing the point of the story they're telling.

About the coronation, and specifically that ALW was one of the composers selected to create new music for the event. I'm curious whose music he might rip off this time.
And don't get me started on why that should be considered breaking news, but it gives your non-UK based audience an idea of the fame of ALW in the UK.

This show seems confused as to what it wants to be, as they don't want to make Cinderella actually punk, because it will turn away too many audiences, but by doing so they make her so bland that the point of her character is lost.
Going for this odd modern historical fusion that is very clearly a la &juliet, is also not working in their favour, because it was done so expertly in &juliet and other shows like it.
It would have been interesting to see them take this more of an 18th century way, like they had carrie dressed in some solo promo shots for the single. That would have given the show a unique look, by going for a completely differnt silhouette. Plus a really easy way to show that Cinderella does not conform, would be to not have her in that silhouette.

I was there in no small part due to yours and others’ coverage and my genuine curiosity. Plus tickets were competitive as Broadway goes. Mom and dad came too.
Dad enjoyed it. Mom who reads cheesy romance novels even on the line, found it delightful. I enjoyed the talent and the vocals and the costumes, but sheesh…
Sadly the story seems to have the same major plot holes and ditched threads and gratuitous incest vibes, plus the lyrics in the US version feel weaker overall.
One song was missing as compared to the UK soundtrack I have listened to that I noticed, but I could not tell you if it is rehearsed and being considered but was not performed or if it was entirely cut.
Oh and the statue prank obviously has only happened once so maybe it will change, but at least so far is majorly toned down from the UK version because Americans can’t be trusted with a joke about you know whats.
There was surprisingly little visible press for a first night of previews as such. Phantom not closing the same weekend after all probably is a good thing.
    Fun all in all,
Thank you for all the research that helped me prep, decompress, and become a more savvy showgoer.

It really was extraneous to the larger plot, granted a lot of stuff retained is too.

The American version by comparison has only released two singles of Linedy so far prior to its debut in previews and the first weekend of previews.
The song made it on the cast album, but it also makes a lot of sense it would have gotten cut from the show because it added so little. Both generally and compared to what it could have at that point in the show.
