Superb video. Watching the waves / reading the surf is definitely a key part of surf fishing. Looking for structure under the water based on the waves and water depth will give a good idea of where you should cast. Sometimes they are at your feet, so a long cast is not always needed. This video is spot on.

Killer brother!! Dirty Harry from OBX On The Fly put me on to you! We just got a vaca home on the west side of Roanoke Island, way up burnside road. So sick brother!! Hoping to book with you next year!! I’ll be booking with obx on the fly when I get back down for a week and change over thanksgiving. Sooo so stoked for fly fish only shop! The red drum video of them banging into yer kayak is insane!!!! 🤘🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽, and afternoon my wife saw it she may now buy one off my brother josh williams a one armed wizard of fly tying, and fellow combat veteran, who taught me to tie! Now I make a living at it. Gotta chase those passions in life!you only get one life to live! Josh has several flies in Orvis and other shops even in Montana I saw his flies for sale. Former PHWFF alumni as an I, now I’m a volunteer for PHWff and National ambassador, which got me a surprise from rob Fordyce To go on the outdoor channels SeaHunter (SeaHunter grouper on the fly, is my episode haha two a black then a gag grouper same fly same rod same rock back to back hook ups! Idk how my 8wt recon held up!since then my arsenal goes up to 9wts 10wt and 11wt. Haha. Josh is also the owner of an outfitter, dead drift outfitters DeadDriftVA.com. Which I guide thru back here in the blue ridge mountains of Roanoke Virginia. Musky, smallies, mountain native brookies browns and bows! Striper! Name it! I fish for it. Allows me to do year round! With trips and flies. As my sponsors ranger from pikeskinz out of England, to fly skinz, working with spawn fly fish, and NRS Pro. Which is what I row currently. Stop by and hit me up if yer ever up this way! Love to take ya out! In return for some local knowledge hahah so I can go fly fishing when I go to Manteo. Love this!! And to make the wife happy we went and fished at Jennette’s pier during the surfing competition and since beach dunes washed out all week I took ember twice to watch the comp. love it! Could watch all day.! I ate sand a few times trying to stand up in Rincon PR my favorite place for beach chilling. But grew up in NY in upstate so put my weight nonbank foot like any other snowboard! But surfboards are not snowboards ha. Tight lines! And if ya have Instagram HMU I’m doing a tutorial for Harry non the articulated version of the Dirty Harry, I used foam so the tail stands straight up. Ill send ya a couple when I shop some more to the shop!!! 🤙🏽👊🏽

A drone might be a good idea to get a slightly higher view then to point out where to cast. Keep up the good work and making great content.

Circle hooks are very hard to get used to if you are used to setting the hook conventional Style I am a New England fisherman and the regulations have just changed for stripers to circle hooks only and man it is very frustrating when you set the hook and pull it right from their mouth it is real hard to just real steady without setting the hook

My best friend and I caught 2 puppy drum from my shore on the James River across from the Ghost Fleet. 1st we ever caught as I'm getting ready to retire from Fort Meade, Maryland and was surprised with these fish we caught at my retirement home in Smithfield, Va . Will definitely use your tips this year as we were basically just using bottom rigs. One question though. Is that hard crab bait or peeler crab bait? My area is loaded with crabs. Was told by locals that Puppy Drum do't travel that far up the river. Thanks for the tips.

Hey brother, I'm used to inshore fishing for redfish down in Swansboro, NC where there is lots of marsh creeks to work through. Each July we spend a week in Frisco, NC where there aren't really marshes to look for the drum. Any tips on where to look and what to look for sound side around Hatteras/Buxton/Frisco area to get into some slot reds?

Absolutely. And Actually Kristi and I are planning to fish Swansboro in the fall a ton. For Frisco I know they catch them all summer at the inlet between Ocracoke and Frisco. I would stop into Red Drum Tackle and Frisco Rod and Gun. Both those tackle shops are always super helpful to give spots and all info. Teaches Lair behind Frisco can be productive but I know there's tons of flats in Buxton on the soundside. I would try the inlet (more beach fishing style) and the flats in Buxton. Let me know how you do!! And maybe we will cross paths in Swansboro!!

I do have a quick question - I have a big top water bass lure selection but most are poppers and not spooks. How will a Pop-R or a Whopper Plopper work? Or is that a no go

So that's funny because I just read a report of a person catching a trout in OBX off a whopper plopper. You could totally do it. My buddy went with me and we brought some but never threw them. I would be sure you could catch some on it. Although I don't know if it would be my #1 go-to. Try it though!! If not then go with a rapala x-rap or skitter v
