This is the video I've been waiting for. Before I watch it let me say I have both. Just got the Z6iii but I'm pretty disappointed with the lack of custom buttons. With the Panasonic I can customize everything. Touch screen, every direction of the the dpad and joystick.
I had both, sold the Nikon and kept the S5 IIX, the image quality is way better on the Lumix. True that the build quality is better on the Z6 iii, but the image quality, dynamic range, noise performance, the button customisability, the stabilisation, the dual card recording and the user interface is much better on the Lumix.
Did you watch the video? ‘The Nikon has noticeably better image quality.’ The S5IIs max out at 420, the Nikon has full RAW… seems like a user error situation here…the reasons to pick the Panasonic would be the IBIS and maybe the slightly better AF- which is what exactly the video says…
@@MarcAdesso 1. Yes I did watch the video, 2. Do you own the cameras and have you tested the quality for yourself? 3. Raw doesn't give more dynamic range on the Nikon, only white balance control and less noise reduction in camera, 4. It's not user error as I have experience with cameras ranging from cheap to high end cinema cameras, the Nikon doesn't impress so much, 5. Dual card recording is not to be ignored. 6. 420 vs 422 is not something you can spot on RUclips and almost can't spot in real life, 7. The Z6 III has noise flicker issues which the S5 IIX doesn't suffer from, 8. Iso 51200 is usable on the S5 IIX where as on the Nikon Iso 12800 is pushing it.
I totally agree that 6k is the sweet spot. That being said, I have found the S5IIx's open gate to be awesome, and if you get a tiny SSD like the Lexar Professional Go, you don't have to do any rigging to unlock ProRes. If you want to rig it up, you can even get BlackMagic BRaw. I love being able to just use cheap, slow SD cards for most stuff, and pop in a 2TB drive when I want to shoot higher quality. With open gate and all the different options, the S5IIx is just super versatile. I really don't like the whole cf express workflow, and I much prefer just using SSD's which are basically a quarter of the cost, for 4 times the performance. I put a half cage on the S5IIx and it doesn't add a lot of bulk but I can still mount a few accessories like a wireless mic receiver. Definitely not knocking the Nikon, I think internal RAW is kinda awesome, but I think I prefer the S5IIx. I was worried about 420 vs 422 for 6k open gate, but it hasn't been an issue tbh, and if i need the 422, I just slap the SSD on the side and shoot 5.8k ProRes 422HQ. I actually had the opposite experience regarding photography, I never really cared about photography at all, but when I got the S5IIx, using the RealTime LUT feature, I have started doing weekly photo walks, just because I love taking pictures with it so much. I have zero desire to ever open Lightroom though, so being able to use Resolve to craft a LUT that applies the look I want for my photos, and just shooting what I see has been awesome. I got my S5IIx for only 1645 from amazon, I definitely think that the Z6III might be a slightly better camera, mainly due to the lack of a crop in 6k 60fps, but I much prefer the LUMIX ecosystem, and the S5IIx has been basically perfect for my use case. I'm not an expert on Nikon lenses, but I really love the variety that the L Mount alliance offers, from cheap Meike lenses (50mm f/18 for under 200) to the really great Leica lenses, there is kind of something for everyone. It's not as large an ecosystem as Sony, but I think L Mount alliance might be the second best in terms of lenses. I also think that the IBIS is just a killer feature, and makes it so useful in so many situations.
Doesn't the Nikon Z6 III only do 6K in N-RAW? Because that sounds extremely inconvenient, not just because it takes up more hard drive space, but because Adobe Premiere doesn't support N-RAW. At least having the option to shoot 6K in H.264, H.265, or even ProRes 422 would be nice, and I'm pretty sure the S5 II X can do that.
Mate it is time for you to drop Premiere Pro....Literally beaten by DaVince in any aspect that matters , including support for N-RAW if that was something you needed. Every professional I know changed to DaVince, except my very stubborn friend which can't be bothered to learn a new software so sticks with Premiere
from various reviews it seems like the Z6III has a severe flickering issue in video which is evident in higher ISO which is a shame because otherwise I would have picked one , as it has far better image , better sensor , better read out speeds etc .. and arguably for handheld run and gun shooting the GH7 is the better choice. also while the Nikon image is better , there is something artificial about its colors , not sure exactly how to qualify it .. what I really want is the darn GH7 in full frame ...
Thanks for the video. Despite having a couple of L Mount cameras, a few months back I ALMOST bought a Z6 III. It is a very tempting camera and I wouldn't necessarily discourage anyone from buying it. I ended up getting an S5 IIX instead because of a bundle deal (S5 IIX + 20-60mm + 50mm f/1.8 lenses for only $2,200). And the three-year warranty was kind of chocolate on top. (Plus I already had the Panasonic 24-`05 f/4, plus the Sigma MC-21 adapter to go along with a couple of Canon lenses). Now, I might STILL get a Z6 III if Panasonic doesn't release an update to the S1H anytime soon. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for the video, Lumix S5IIX can record only ProRes 422 HQ to SSD and not 12-bit RAW as you mentioned, that is only possible to external recorder monitor (ProRes Raw and BRaw)
Just a heads up, the Z6iii's stabilization (like Sony/Canon) is optimized for photography. I suspect now that they've acquired RED and are focusing more on video that they may develop video-mode stabilization algorithms. As for focus, dive into the menu. There are menus for adjusting focus adjustment speed in video so that you get either a rapid change in focus or a slower more subtle cinematic focus speed change. The noise floor issues may be addressed in a firmware as this is the first partial stacked sensor Nikon has put out and there may be issues there. We shall see.
Really liked the S5iix but now that they slashed the price of the Nikon Z6iii and also the new acquisition of RED am really digging their first entry hybrid camera bodies (z9 z8 z6iii) and where they heading! Sure it’s not perfect but damm that Nikon has that perfect blend of everything Log/Raw video shooting and photo experience etc etc
The S5IIX is a thoughtfully designed video oriented hybrid camera that has an old sensor. (Open gate, active cooling, dual slot recording, anamorphic de-squeeze, phenomenal stabilization, SSD recording, great AF, anamorphic stabilization, shutter angle, waveforms, custom LUT monitoring, excellent customizability & vector scopes but bad rolling shutter, limited frame rate options & no CFexpress support) The Z6III has innovative sensor technology but lacks a lot of small features that add up quickly. (No dual slot recording, overheating, limited compressed recording options, bad video stabilization, no shutter angle, limited customizability, limited dynamic range, flickering shadows in RAW, etc.)
Definitely a bit of a heavier video (feel free to skip around), but I hope you all enjoy this comparison. I really dig both of these cameras for different reasons. Lmk if there is more you want me to cover when it comes to these cameras! Thanks for hanging out
not sure how u prefer to take pictures on the S9 and not on the s5IIX, I mean the EVF alone is a reason to prefer the S5IIX, the grip is also better and I feel the buffer clears faster and is more optimised for burst shoots on the S5IIX. and for the comparison with the Nikon, you focused a lot on the Z6III's RAW capabilities and the 4.2.2 which are not that noticeable, but you missed the fact that the S5IIX's footage looks better most of the time due to it's noise management and colour reproduction.
Great Stuff Connor. Your video lays a 🎯 on the fact people need to pick based on their actual use will be not what the Camera offers. I also agree with you….My Client Applications are not calling for 12-Bit RAW. At some point we all hit our peak requirements. 😅 Plus the Open Gate 🤯😅

Panasonic are the only ones making active cooled hybrid cameras. GH6, GH7, S1H, S5II/X. If you only need a video camera, then the Sony FX cameras also enter the conversation.
Well, NRAW is 12 bits, s5IIX is 10 bits, although it can record 5.9 PRORES (So it would be fairer to compare colors), but by converting LOG to rec709, we convert katinka to 8 bits, which means the difference in color saturation should be minimal!
Can't handle that noise (flickering in some cases) coming out of the z6iii but I much prefer the Nikkor lens lineup. All in all, will stick with my 2 S5iiX bodies for now due to the complete feature set.
Ok, I think your video quality is stellar, and you brought up some interesting points, but this video has some issues - and I'm not saying I'm better (your videos are way better looking than mine) - but this felt rushed. One of my toxic traits is brutal honesty, so here it goes..... (sorry in advance) - The Lumix Z6 Mark III slip was on B-Roll so you could have easily re-dubbed - The Lumix slip again at 13:05 & 13:15 was easily solvable with a dub and some b-roll (to be honest, you're filming A-Cam with an S9, and keep saying Lumix referring to the Nikon, you seem biased- I also shoot Lumix exclusively, but I wouldn't have released this video with this many mistakes referring to Nikon as Lumix) - The S5IIX can NOT do RAW without an external recorder connected via HDMI - again, makes you look biased. - What happened at 7:50? - this is partly why this video felt rushed watching it on my end. Seems like you were going to switch to the gimbal but forgot (based on the title in the top left). - You did disclose the sponsorship at the end, and while I appreciate that you don't want your retention to tank, I've read rules about disclosure and that it's supposed to be earlier in the video. Not terrible how you did it, but just don't get in trouble. Your first mention of the gimbal really should have disclosed that the video is sponsored by Hohem. I know it is, but some viewers won't know that. And checking the box without making it clear what is sponsored in the video, is frowned upon. Without it, it sounds like Nikon or Lumix sponsored it as you watch the whole video. Again, this is meant to be constructive, not reductive. An extra 18 minutes to review the video & probably 10 minutes of editing would have solved most of this. Beyond that, I WISH I could make my content look half as good as yours.
@ Nice! Thanks for that! I can definitely see the value of going up to the X now then. For most the S5ii will most likely be more than enough but you're right, that all black look is magnificent and I'd pay more JUST for that lol
It seems that the settings for eye detection were a little deceiving. The focus for Lumix was focused on the horses face, not eye. For wildlife, I find Nikon to be very, very good, but like with any camera, you must set up the eye acquisition carefully. The detection for lumix seemed setup more for area foxus than eye whi h is fake. There is NO way that was eye focus on the Lumix it was area focus, and don't be so deceptive. Other than that, it's a good review.
Thx for the video I was on edge for a time been but the prores 5.9 K SSD footage from S5iiX is really really good one thing I am missing with Lumix is Timecode jam sync...and you need to use tentacle or Deity TC-1 to have a multicam setup in sync...
It seems Nikon is not addressed to video but loved the imperfect and cinematic shot of the horse. Did you make it in post or it's the footage nature ? Great video!
Definitely a preference thing. Me personally I’m not a huge fan of Nikon’s images. It’s almost too perfect and color accurate I like a little bit more character 😂 Although a cleaner image is the best place to start at and at character yourself, but there’s something about the softness on the image that makes it just superb
Lumix supports 12bit raw to SSD via BRaw and Pro Res. Being able to shoot to SSD external is or my tastes a huge workflow advantage and you get extra color information 12 bit recording. Having rented both being tempted to go to Nikon I was actually very disappointed based on the hype. I found the build quality much better on the Lumix as the battery door was prone to accidentally open which annoyed me and I find the mushy d-pad of the Nikon annoying. I prefer the jog dial of the Lumix BUT i prefer the rear screen quality of the Nikon. I also agree with your AF consistency findings, I’ve found the Lumix to be more accurate (which surprised me a LOT on the latest firmware). having said that, the z6iii is early in it’s shelf life so I’d expect it to be updated to catch up with the Lumix with firmware updates- by and large the hardware looks to be there already, Nikon just needs a few juicy firmwares and it could be a BEAST. For professional work, I’d still pick the Lumix - dual cards, dynamic range, SSD recording and most importantly the XLR adapter that Panasonic makes. I’d love Nikon to release a digital hotshoe XLR adapter. Im very tempted by the Nikon and going forward I’m going to wait to see if they introduce dual cards recording , some of the additional video assist features of the Lumix, anamorphic support and then consider my options. Both great cameras. Pro’s and con’s to both in my experience.
@ you’re quite right, my bad. I was wrong. I should double checked before posting. Thank you for correcting me :) It’s pro res 422 hq what I should have said to the ssd. Footage grades beautiful and is a nice step up. It’s raw only to external recorder like black magic monitor/recorder or atamos if you want ProRes raw :)
It's disappointing that Z6III does not have an internal 4K 4:2:2 codec that isn't massive. Z6III offers N-Raw, ProRes Raw HQ, ProRes 422 HQ, or H.265, which is only 4K 4:2:0.
What is the smallest 4k 10 bit files? From what I have seen it is 190 mbps, is that correct? I love using the 72 mbps h.265 4k 10 bit 420 on the Lumix S5IIX. It is great for everyday shooting when I don't want to have to worry about filling up cards and hard drives, but want some flexibility in post with v-log and 4k resolution. Certainly it won't compete in a shootout with the large file formats, but it is my daily driver codec as I don't need the high end stuff for most I what I shoot.
If I were buying my first HYBRID! camera now, I would buy Nikon Z6iii for sure! ( but already have two S5II ) . Lumix is still not as good in photo aspect as Canon/N/S
I don't think it's a fair comparison, cause the Z6III is a new camera and the S5II(x) is 2 years old. Compare the Z6III to the shortly coming S1R2 in build quality and the 47MP sensor. The S5 and the S5II(x) has never been the premium body of the S lineup. Also the Lumix never ever been 2500 dollars, when it came out it was 1990 dollars, it was the best sub-2000 dollar camera.
@@Bigcookfilms OK, but comparing the S5II(x) to the Nikon Z6III is as unfair if you would compare it to the Z6II. They were released 1,5 yrs apart from eachother. First the Z6II then the S5II and then the Z6III of course in 1,5 years in technology they've improved a lot. Let's see, but the Z8 was released in May 2023 and the S1R2 are just coming out and should be with more advanced tech.

That’s true! LUMIX cameras are priced super competitively. Good note
Besides RAW output, All-I codecs, SSD recording, and that incredible blackout look ;)
@@FilmFlab ah see I thought it was already updated to have those features! Still heck of a price!
@@AlpacoFilms You can pay to have raw, but the rest are S5IIX only.
Still, S5II is an incredible camera!
Other than that, it's a good review.
i like the lumix color science... its look more cinematic out of box other than nikon look slightly video feel
It’s almost too perfect and color accurate I like a little bit more character 😂
Although a cleaner image is the best place to start at and at character yourself, but there’s something about the softness on the image that makes it just superb
Do anybody need 6K or 422 in "normal daily" photo or video making or if making content on youtube?
No
Lumix supports 12bit raw to SSD via BRaw and Pro Res.
Pro’s and con’s to both in my experience.
that's not accurate , you need the external recorder for raw , the external SSD connected to the S5iix will record ProRes HQ at the highest.
@ you’re quite right, my bad. I was wrong. I should double checked before posting. Thank you for correcting me :)
It’s pro res 422 hq what I should have said to the ssd. Footage grades beautiful and is a nice step up. It’s raw only to external recorder like black magic monitor/recorder or atamos if you want ProRes raw :)
In the AF section of the video you typed s6iii instead of z6iii. Just saying
My edit has lots of little mistakes ha
Amazing footage!
It's disappointing that Z6III does not have an internal 4K 4:2:2 codec that isn't massive. Z6III offers N-Raw, ProRes Raw HQ, ProRes 422 HQ, or H.265, which is only 4K 4:2:0.
Prores 422 internal
@ Nikon Z6III only has ProRes 422 HQ, which are insanely large files. Better to shoot raw at that point.
Curious how the x-h2s compares to these two, also 6.2k open gate recording
I got the Z6 !!! and i don't know what im doing. I just press the the record button and hope for the best
is this a repost
Nope
Nikon is great. Also instant pass because of the lack of dual recording.
Well I'd go for lumix has 2 stops more dynamic range in video
I don't know about 2 stops. It definitely has a stop more.
@Wildridefilms 2 stops it was test by gerald undone
Nice!
The differences dont seem to be so much anymore.
The S5iix was 2200 usd when it came out and the S5ii was 2000 usd and a comparison for the S1Rii would be the Z8
@@iamzr81You're right bro and when the S5ii came out it was getting compared to the Z6ii. Dont get me wrong newer tech should be better and the comparison just shows how good the S5iix is being a over a year old.
Nikon S6 III the new model 😮😂
A $2k camera recording in 4:2:0.... ooof
Open gate, but not in raw.
It's no contest. The Z6 III destroys the S5 IIX. The Nikon can do 6K 60P 12 BIT Raw Internal. The S5II Crops at 4K 60 😂😂
Giant ass files with 1-2 stops less dynamic range.
@@laliland92 My original S5 has more dynamic range than the S5 II. I would trade a little dynamic range for more fun. 6K 60 4K 120 and FHD 240
@@Blazerrrrrrrrr I have both. The S5 has a an ever so slightly nicer picture than the S5II, but it does not have more DR. The Nikon is literally 1-2 stops less in video depending on the codecs. And 1 stop less in photo. Yes it's a faster sensor, it's also a shittier picture.
@@Blazerrrrrrrrri have q camera able of 120, 240 or even 300 fps and i never use it in real life
