    Guys that get impatient: you've got to remember that he's standing up in front of a class- maybe even after lunch- and not everyone is a Spring Chicken. Try as they may, they get sleepy and distracted, particularly if the material is tough, at first, to comprehend and integrate. A good lecturer will take the temperature of the audience and respect their attention span. Some times, an anecdote or two will allow the class to coalesce and get caught up and he'll get on with the information. My guess, Highliner, is that marine electronics are not as daunting to you as it might be to a newcomer. Patience, Skipper. We were all newbies once.

    Really appreciate the videos. Used to install alarm and other low voltage DC systems, home theatre, coaxial, phone, intercom, etc. Luckily apprenticed to someone with a similar mindset about installation mentality. The videos are much appreciated and I'm sure the boat owners that are your clients are more than satisfied. Recently took up sailing and the info is invaluable. Thank you!

    Your fuse failure at 43 min is exactly what happened to my buddy. It was a factory fuse on a minkota on board charger. We plugged it in at the dock after fishing and i caught a faint smell of burning electrical components. After some hunting i saw a whisp of smoke come out of the fuse holder. The charger was bad and over charging on that lead. The fuse failed closed. Always trust your nose.

    As a future cruiser, the electrical system is one of many areas that I need to learn and this video is a great help. I do have some experience with teaching and i would gently suggest that you try to get into the habit of repeating the questions you receive from the class so that your your wider audience understands your answers.

    I worked in the marine industry for 15 years and then decided to become an electrician. I’ve been an electrician for 6+ years and now I’d like to get back on boats and become a marine electronics technician.

    Not using AC in the summer? It's 90F+ every day in the summer where I am. Took me a moment to realize he meant alternating current and not air conditioning.

      @@PacificYachtSystems No worries. Happens a lot in jargon/tech heavy subjects. It made me laugh since what you said about AC made perfect sense in the context you were using but was 100% absurd based on my context/assumptions.

    NOTE if you just found this - after a few minutes, I was about to skip ahead to get to the 'good stuff' - how to do this and that. But didn't and am SO glad. Jeff lays out a lot of background that tells you how you should approach the whole area. When I got to parts like fusing, I felt well prepared for the specifics and prepared to make sure I did a proper job when it came to it

    I came to this video because it was listed as "basics". I am still looking for a video, or series of videos, that is basic. Cote asks us what we're seeing looking at these videos. I have no idea. Also, Cote uses much terminology without defining any of it. Again, I was looking for a true basics video. Cote has knowledge that I desperately need to improve the wiring on my boat. If only he could really get to actual basics. Let me help: I do not know what circuits and wires are supposed to be connected to or not. I do not recognize anything these wires are connected to except for the batteries. I cannot tell which wires are grounding ones. These photos would make good quiz material for students who had a little more understanding of electrical. So, Cote, please help us who know we probably have electrical issues, but don't even know enough to know who it correct or incorrect. I would hazard a guess that some of the bad work you cited was done because the boat owners knew less than what you consider basic.

    I really wish you could start with a basic visual of power needs and resulting wiring design options. Put the components on a sheet of white plywood, mount them and wire them together....then you can go back and discuss best practices for each detail. Folks need the blueprint first....who would ever go about any wiring job without a crystal CLEAR map of what you are about to do....I know I dont. WHich makes watching hours of video about minutia pointless if you cannot see the design map.

      Hi Mike, unfortunately I do not have practical experience with your engine. On most engines, the hour meter increments only if the engine tach receives an RPM value.

    You seem very knowledgeable about marine electrical which is great. So, maybe it's hard to really go basic. I found it difficult to follow your use of terminology because I know NOTHING about electricity. I need something that's is truly basic as I know the electrical on my boat wasn't done safely. I really want to learn the correct way to wire my boat, but this seminar is speaking above my level. I used to teach university level courses in my own field, so I know something about disseminating knowledge and training people. In your seminar, you spoke to those who answered questions not the ones who remained quiet because they didn't want to reveal how little they knew. It's important not to gear teaching/instruction to the most knowledgeable student in the room.

      Lydia Johnson well, learn something about electricity before taking the course. This series obviously presupposes a basic knowledge of electricity. If that knowledge is above what you have then acquire it or take a more basic course. It’s a bit demanding to say that he need to dumb it down further to accommodate you.

      aquilifergroup it would have been helpful for you to share HOW you “learn something” about marine electricity. Everyone starts from zero knowledge. The last time I checked, no baby was born understanding electrical engineering. At some point you, somehow, learned the basics. Instead of a snarky response, how about offering something helpful. Your response offered nothing.

    I wonder if you can recommend a qualified marine electrician to help me in Connecticut. I have a 1970 wood trawler that has so many wire issues and I know nothing about DC electric. Example, solid strand wire, the old house wire that is incased in metal and has paper insulation, no heat shrink terminals or shrink wrapping of wire. Five switches run the whole boat! I could go on and on. If you know anyone in Connecticut that can help me please I want to hire a qualified marine electrician. Thanks!

      Sorry, I do not have any connections to qualified marine technicians. As a a first step, I would suggest to look for a ABYC certified tech.

    It's 2021, you are a better presenter now, right. Start speaking to people as if they know nothing because many new guys don't. Start from first principles, like Nigel, and you will be magic. You know it, but you lose many viewers by not starting from the first principals. Maybe I need a more basic course, but I think your audience would be larger if you think most boat owners know very little about this stuff.

    This video has a misleading title! It has nothing to do with "marine electrical basics" but an hour of highlighting completely ignorant mistakes and careless electrical installs. Waste of time for anyone who has knowledge of electrical theory and installation and cares about their work !

      The navy from what I heard has an excellent program, boat electricians are highly needed all over the country I believe that would be an excellent decision for a future job.

      @@_zarthix_ the navy will help with his/her future in any field however the navy is a lot more stressful due to doing more than just your job. Just really research the navy and your job of choice before making that decision

    I'd say that I'm rewiring an old new to us sailboat but the reality is that I'm "wiring it". Out with the old and in with the new. I'm pulling all of the old stuff out. Old stuff discoveries 1. Shore power inlet ground disconnected. 2. Heat shrink butt connecter that was heat shrunk but not crimped. 3. Terminal connectors, yes plural, that did not pass the "pull test", simply came apart with a slight tug. 4. Abraded wires where the wires were exposed. 5. Headliner (ceiling) light wires that were taped together with painters tape, not so much as a butt connector or electrical tape. Thank goodness I pulled the headliner panels off. All of that I tore out. 6. Quick disconnect wire to a USB outlet that broke free of it's quick disconnect female terminal. 7. 22GA wire butt connected to 14GA wire butt connected to 22GA wire again and of varied colors. The only remaining old wires are dead wires (not hot) and simply in place as fish lines. What a disaster. 1977 sailboat. As Jeff says "nothing is ever easy" and "Don't trust anything on an old boat".

    if you have 30 amp shore power what kind of fuse\breaker would you use? 30 amp? or do you size a bit highre like 40 amp? My boat has shore power but no breaker....

    A lot of times it's the owners that cause the problem cuz they don't want the contractor to do a thorough job because of costs.

    I love this video and want to learn more and will watch the whole series. I do have to disagree on one point though. Almost all car manufacturers now have a distribution block basically built onto the positive of the terminal. I've seen 5 fuses branching off a positive terminal. I'm wanting to transfer my 25 years of auto electric knowledge into the marine world so I really appreciate your videos!

    Hi there I used to have a mental block about electrical systems and thought I would never understand. After fire on boat (new to us) last year I forced myself to learn from the experts. Nigel Calder book as well as hiring a marine electrician for advice. I've only watched part 1 of 6 and look forward to the others. Don't listen to the naysayers, your presentation skills and content are fantastic!

    Hi From a marine engineer/ industrial electricians back ground, The subject that I would start from in DC battery installations as a beginning is the available prospective short circuit fault current and its effects in a fault situation.
    And next the explanation of earth fault lamps , and the most important is a volt meter showing the DC volt at present, one on the house batteries, and one on the engine batteries, most important.
    Very few boaters would understand and the above three most important points on any electrical installation.

    Yeah people don't realize that the ground is the most important thing in DC. The power actually flows through the ground

      The DC negative (commonly call ground because the DC negative is connected to ground) provides the return path for all DC circuits. It’s all about making sure both the DC positive and the DC negative are good.

    Will the thermal camera overlay a chart? ... I'm assuming the tech is not yet there..

    Hi Jeff, A small electrical question. To do with continuity.
    I get continuity with the bilge water and (only) the negative terminal when the pump is functioning. Is that normal? When it's in auto or off there's no continuity. Which is good. What are there any consequences to this for my copper rivets? Keel bolts?

      It's quite possible your negative continuity to the bilge water is from the grounded keel and not the bilge pump. Surprised to hear that your bilge pump negative would have connectivity to the bilge water.

      Pacific Yacht Systems thanks for your reply! It freaked me out and I kill switched it off. Boat doesn't make water anymore so I'm not worried but still need to figure this out. It's a cheap seaflo with cheap wire jackets, maybe they chafed or cracked. I'll do some kitchen sink testing this winter with the whole setup.

      By the way I got 2 identical pump setups as backup, funny thing is one pump has about 60% more resistance than the other. The second one is higher up so theres no water there thus no continuity, I'll fill it up and test both soon

    This video series is just awesome. I have Nigel’s book and will continue to use that alongside to reinforce my understanding, but the quality and passion of Jeff’s teaching make the whole subject come alive and I feel like my learning curve is near vertical!

      Probably because the video is long
      RUclips tends to favour quick, concise, to the point content
      People want to learn an entire trade in 15 minutes or less 😂

    You mentioned in one of your videos how a cheap inverter can cause galvanic corrosion in our underwater metals but I listen to these while trucking so am not fully absorbing everything. I just bought a 43 year old sloop and I need to be able to charge my laptop. Is there a low cost safe solution for me? The purchase price was a huge hit on my finances. I'm going to be cruising BC all summer on the hook using alternator and possibly solar panels. Advice? 😀 Thanks so much for these videos by the way. I've learned my electrics are a liability but I should be able to disable everything I can't get up to code 😃🙏🏻

      Hi Nomad, for charging a laptop, purchase and install a 200-300 Watt true sine wave inverter. You don't need anything bigger.

      I'm on my second week of study with this guy, The brain can only take in so much at a time,. He takes the system approach which is essential for safety.
      I bought a 1970's boat that had been "wired to the moon" in some foreign place.
      I was given verbal instructions how to start the engine and that was it.
      I eventually found a guy like this who sorted everything in one four hour session. That was the best money I ever spent. I had had several cowboys on board , and dismissed them all as useless.
      The first cowboys came on board when I was not there, and contrary to my express instructions, they tried to start the engine in the standard way ............. FAIL.
      The second told me it would take two men two weeks work to do the job ................. it took four hours, one man with a van and boat electrical experience.
