Same thought here. Blade Runner 2049 was the movie of the year for me, such a shame it didn't get nominated or at the very least got back the budget it cost for. But at least it got a lot of praise after all that. Del Toro deserved this for me, since the movie was simple concept turned into an artistic revelation; never seen something this artistic win since Birdman.

Tbf I would have been absolutely fine if most of the nominees had won. I loved Dunkirk, Get Out, Phantom Thread, Three Billboards and Shape of Water all for different reasons, and each one had more than enough to justify BP. SoW was a masterpiece, and deserves so much love.

Reading the coments, it's clear no matter what film would have won, a lot of people would disagree. Among all the films nominated, there's no movie that most of the people agree which is the best one, the people were divided.

The Shape of Water was the second fantasy film who won as Best Picture. Previously, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on 2004. That film was winning 4 awards from 13 nominations, tying the records for Birdman (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), The King's Speech, No Country for Old Men, A Beautiful Mind, and Unforgiven.

While I would've preferred Phantom Thread (my 2nd favorite movie of 2017) or Three Billboards to win, I still very much think Shape of Water deserved the award. Tbh, I think Blade Runner 2049 (my favorite movie of 2017) should've won, but it wasn't even nominated.

I loved all of these movies, I also really liked Call me by your name
But in my opinion for me (personally) Shape of Water is the best, because it left a huge and the strongest impact of me. I am a big fan of fantasy and other genres too, but this particular film is special because of how every element in the film blemds with each other, and sets up a very powerful and beautiful scene (accompanies with one of the best soundtrack ever). Its kinda like Amadeus in some way, magical.
I still agree that Call me by your name, three billboards, blade runner and PT were amazing. But for me personally SoW made the biggest impact
