Blender 2.91 Hardsurface Sculpting Cracks

  • In this video I show the sculpting of cracks to a hardsurface mesh using Blender 2.91. I use stndard brushes like the scrape, draw sharp, pinch, grab and the Clay strips brush for sculpting and I also remesh a duplicate of the low poly mesh by using the voxel remesher.
I start sculpting with the mouse and the scrape brush for stylized edges, then I switch to my tablet, I am using an XP Pen tablet (Deco Pro).

For anyone wonder. At 2:20 , when talking about remeshing. He says "Shift + R" to show the remesh grid. In Blender 3.0+ its now just R without the shift.

@@JayAnAm Hi :) Ive been looking for some addon (or alternatively some external software) that can create LODs for you. All Ive found so far is Simplygon and InstaLD, Simplygon simply not doing a very great job (it often gives bad geometry and doesnt work with meshes that combine sculpted and modelled geometry) and InstaLOD which requires Evaluation (So Im guessing its quite expensive, and generally speaking I really dont like softwares with subscriptions/limited time licenses)
You dont happen to know of any good solutions?
Otherwise, you dont think you could write an addon for automating the process of creation LODs? Afterall Blender has all the tools required for making LODs without having to do any work manually and its just a matter of combining them all into something thats faster to use.
      Something like:
Duplicating the mesh > Decimating the geoemtry with the decimate modifier (and applying) > Transfering the UVs and material from the original mesh to the newly created one (with the transfer data tool) > baking the normals from the high poly mesh > Renaming the mesh name of choice (to have the LODs work with the game engine > Moving the LOD to a desired collection (I use Unreals "Send to Unreal" addon, which uses Collections and object names to organize the LODs, which is why Im requesting this) and then redoing the process for all LODs you want to create.
I think it would have the potential of becoming really popular and if I knew Python I would go ahead and make one myself (but I dont so :l ). Simplygon (which seems to be the most popular LOD creation tool atm) has very few options for its polygon reduction algorithms and often creates artifacts as well as that it doesnt support baking detail - All of which Blender can do better.

You could box it out fully and then bake curvature in painter and texture these details into the height chanel using a generator, more creative freedom and fully procedural. When done show off the height details using the displacement map, still procedural but high-poly. Finally use apply the displacement and select places that are unecessarily dense and use the unsubdivide edges method to optimize the mesh

Yes, i know that i can use pinch to make the crack thinner but it would be cooler to make falloff for brush without graphical tablet (by pen)
It is very easy to make pinch when crack-outside is empty but you will fail if draw a crack on ornament. Pinching the crack will destroy the ornament

First of all, thank you for this video. LOVE IT!!!. I have a problem though. I don't know why, but when I'm using the scraping brush, the orientation of the surface area of the brush is always facing the ground ( flat, on the z-axis). On your video here, your brush surface is facing the surface area you are going to be molding. like the edges, right face, corners. My brush is just downward and never brushes at any angle. Please if anyone has suggestions on how to remedy this...

What could also be done to make it look more like a broken pillar is to rough up the top surface and sides but not the top more edge as much
Then it looks more like it was originally a part of a larger whole, because when something breaks (like marble, pottery, tombstones, etc) it's *never* a smooth surface and the edges are sharper at the break
The edges on the top and sides of the pillar look too much like they were made that way and not worn away with age
