Just wanted to say that this explained the nuances of starting onions from seed better than anything else I have ever seen. I was currently making the mistake of too much light, so thanks for that tidbit. And cutting the stuck ones was also a brilliant tip.

Seed viability of the alliums (onions, leeks, chives, garlic, and their relatives) is fairly short- usually 1 to 2 years. So it’s best to plant onion seeds the same year you buy them- they may not be good next year or three years from now.

Onion seeds of a named variety are quite important for 2 more reasons than you mentioned: 1. the long term storage quality (preferably 4 to 6 months) and 2. the shape of the mature onion (a mature onion with a recessed or convex root bottom is poor to handle when processing in the kitchen).

Nice video. I'm in Maine, about 45° latitude. For 2 years I bought plants. They grew
well, but a bit expensive. $10-18 per bunch of about 60. Last year I tried from seed,
just to see if it would work.. 1 order of Patterson pelleted seed from Johnny's, $7
1000 seeds, no big deal if this experiment failed, but they grew! Why pay $20 for
100 onions, when you can grow 800+ onions for $7. This year I'm all in.
Already have 100 Ailsa Craig's started and sprouting
    150 Patterson's just planted 3 days ago
150 Cabernet's just planted 3 days ago (red storage)
Will be planting 150 Expression's this weekend when the Ailsa's come off the heat
mat. Sounds like a lot of Onions but I have 1, 4' x 8' dedicated bed, and also plant
them as companions around Brassica's, Tomato's, Peppers, and Carrots to repel
insects, and critters. It worked. Plus I want to know which stores the best for next year.
TYFS, Mark and Rosa Again, Great video!

We love green onions. Since we live in SoCal, it's easy for use to grow year round. I prefer scallions/shallot because its' easier to grow. I don't like growing from seeds, as it takes way too long to harvest. Fastest way to grow onion is saving the sets or get store bought by using the bottom inch. Harvest usually takes about one month from planting. Since we only harvest the top green part, I have been harvesting for two months and still going. We will save some of the bulbs for next year. And last, try growing it in aquaponics, it's faster and you can grow more in smaller spaces. Smaller containers work fine too, especially if you can put it indoor in cold weather climate in the beginning.

First I would like to say I like watching what you have to say on RUclips about gardening, It's most informative and has helped me tremendously. BUT... you have mentioned that Onion sets can be Expensive, "NOT True" I just bought a 100 Sets or bulbs of red onions for only $3.25 and a 100 Wight onion sets for the same price. Now it's true that you get more of a bang for your buck when buying seeds but thinking of the time that's saved when buying large quantity of onion sets instead of buying seeds...... to me it makes more sense to just buy onion sets or bulbs than spend time growing from onion seeds.

Awesome man! You gotta do what's best for your situation. I've also found that sets, because they are interrupted/stalled, that they result in smaller bulbs and harvests. For that reason alone I stopped using them. But if they are working for you, go for it....they are like 90% less work! 🙂

What tips do you have for fertilizing onions while they are still in trays indoors? When should I start fertilizing? How often? What is the preferred fertilizer? Can I start the seeds in a seedling mix with worm castings, and not have to fertilize later?

Awesome Fiona, its nice when that works out!! I stopped doing sets about 3 seasons ago. Once I mastered growing my own starts from seeds, doing sets just seemed like a complete step backwards for me. Sets are easy though...they are basically half grown already! Plant them in the spring after your last frost date, harvest the onions when the shoots begin to fail 10-12 weeks later. :-)

I juXZ for my northern Zone 6 clime. I started two flats of Heirloom Walla Walla from Seeds of Change. Not big on saving seeds but I do like SOC's mylar resealable packaging as I al5ways have a library of seeds and in a stable climate (just not wet). On that note, how many seeds do you drop in each hole? I know one is never enough and if they're easy to separate I figured I'd put several over the 2" square and top with peat. I grow most things in bulk and close packed for thinning into cups or peat pods as they grow because I give a ton away to neighbors and at foodbanks, so singles is cool for a lotta veggies. I think these will be my early onions as it's late march and hot summer will be here in 3 months but maybe I'll make sets and can't wait to do a winter planting. Also trying to get a rhubarb and asparagus patch in.

You can stand seeds in small pots in water for a week and the water will never reach the top where the seeds are. For capillary action to work the top must already be wet, so you must dampen the top with water from a sprayer to get the seeds to germinate. Once wet all the way through, water at the bottom will reach the top.

Great tips. I started some onions from seed in my greenhouse. Are onions true to seed? Also, I assume I can grow them over winter in a heated greenhouse?

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  2 года назад +1

Onions can be both true to seed as well as not. Depends on whether you start with a bybrid plant or an heirloom one. For growing, onions bulb up due to increasing day length. That's the clue they get. I'm not sure what effect growing them in a greenhouse will do.

If you plant onions in rows or if they have their own bed then you don't need to know the suggested companion plantings and the do not plant next to list. I garden in small spaces with a lot of shade to maneuver. My planting style is intercropping-succession planting and intensive planting. So timing is really important along with what to plant them next to. Here is the list I have in my notes.
    Companion Planting For Onions
Carrots should be planted near onions because onions will repel the carrot fly. Onions will also chase away the aphids, so plant them near aphid-prone (but onion-friendly) veggies. Other good friends of onions include beets, cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, and spices like marjoram, savory, and rosemary.
Keep onions away from: Asparagus, beans, peas and strawberries.

You should toss in that it’s important to cure them after you pick them for slicing onions. I use a metal screen and leave them to air dry and harden off.

They are in a rectangular seed tray instead of individual cells. I have been cutting them down to about 3-4". Do I need thin them out at this point? When would be a good time to plant outside here in Victoria?

I started onion seeds for the first time this year about 10 days ago while Antarctica was vacationing here in Oklahoma & Texas. They've been popping up over the last few days and there's something so cute about them.
I'm glad you talked about the loop thing and trimming them. That wouldn't have occurred to me, but it makes sense.
My light is on a different cycle than what the onions will need, so hopefully it won't throw them off too much. But I'm really glad you explained that part, too. I'll be sure to set it up correctly when I'm able to expand and get more lights.
Thanks so much! This is really an excellent video!

  • @sbarr10

Good video! Length of light exposure on onion seedlings noted.
When I start seeds for transplanting I do them on moist paper towels in ziplocked baggies. This is to check seed viability before I commit to using up some precious starting mix. If I get good germination then I prepare cells with starting mix and plant the germinated seeds.
Also, I just went through a round of trying to germinate some old Evergreen and Tokyo bunching onion seeds. First attempts weren't successful - I germinated a bunch of other onion and leek seeds successfully at the same time.
So I got a piece of sand paper, folded it, then scarified Evergreen and Tokyo seeds inside the folded sandpaper by rubbing my hands together. Then I put the scarified seeds on the wet paper towels. Getting some good germination now.
