It's not about being poor or rich. What Christian said "the US restricts entry to poor people" is nonsense. As an immigrant to take flight to the US, you have to apply for a visa regardless of your social status. Even if you have all the money, you can't just enter the US without a proper visa either as an immigrant, tourist, or work related. Being "poor" also plays a part why they do this. Economic hardship force them to enter the US illegally. Even if they have access to an American consulate in their country, there is no guarantee they will be approve of a visa and most time it's a long process and meantime they are desperate to have a better life.
