- The AAA rated Billabong Pro was more than just a world title decider. Cold hard cash of a $100K was also up for grab. While spectators and media turned out in droves to watch, the clean west swell was turning Pipeline into a perfect canvas for the artists to express.
Tom Carroll, Barton Lynch, Damien Hardman

He picked me up hitch hiking shortly afterward. I can't even tell you cool he was. I would venture to say he was the coolest guy I had met in my 10 years on the North Shore. Just a regular caring dude from Oz.
I was on the beach and saw everything. Bullshit interference on Carroll but the day was Barton's. His surfing was fantastic and his board rode so smoothly. And it was Downing shape. It was such a beautiful day! 1989!!
1988?
Got to meet Barton when I was a kid. Really cool dude. Met him at Aqua East Surf Shop in Jacksonville Beach Florida.
Barton Lynch is such an epic human
Barton is the drop in King
The narrator is literally reading, almost word for word, Sonny Miller's narration of this footage as it first appeared on the Surfer magazine TV show in 1989. I don't know what's worse: hearing the voice-over, or the fact that I still remember every word from the old shows.
What a blooper reel. They got the year wrong!
wow, those are threes by today's standards. Pipe surfing has come a long way!
Great vid, thanks. So many Aussies at the pointy end - love it!!
I remember they interviewed Todd Holland after that interference and he said he was going to go right anyway. That was a BS interference, but that's the way it goes sometimes in sport.
Loved the ASP format and the importance of the triple crown.
Yea, 1988. The 1989 world champion was Martin Potter.
Yes !!!!thought I was losing it.
Kelly recently was interviewed by Barton Lynch on RUclips. Kelly said he was watching the Tom Carroll Todd Holland heat and thought Todd won irrespective of the interference.
