I was able to repair my torpedo heater - thanks to you! Your initial message of "First, understand HOW is works." was the key. I've have enjoyed many of your videos. Your sense of humor is refreshing and your practical approach (e.g. "It's not the Space Shuttle!") is exactly what I need. Typically, you don't skip important process steps and your "Mr. Cameraman" manages to show the details that are usually missed by other providers. Even though I've been repairing and maintaining an array of farm equipment for more than 30 years, your excellent videos have given me confidence to take on repairs that I might have otherwise handed over to a professional. Thanks very much!
Man one of the Absolute best and simplest Explained videos I have seen yet.. Straight to the point and explains everything clearly and simply so you can understand and fix your heater
Taryl is awesome! you get humour, you get Boogers, but you get his YEARS of working on stuff, you can tell he has worked on gear for a long time. His workshop is extensive with tools and parts. I love his videos.
Watched 3 videos before this, (wasted my time) then I watched this one, best explanation of every possible cause of my problem and how to resolve the problem. Thank You.BTW your video on riding mower valve adjustment was just as useful for that problem, you have earned a new subscriber.
Yep, this is the best torpedo repair video out there. I have one heater that I named "Smokey" and another that is named "the Bandit". Need to fix them both.
Not only are you very entertaining...you showed me a tip that no ther video showed me which helped me get my torpedo working. The gapping on the air pump was my issue and your the first to mention it. I didn’t even know it was an issue. Soon as I gapped it.. it fired up!! Thanks a bunch!!
All that talk about diesel fuel got me to thinking about bio-diesel, so I did some homework and picked up some fry oil at the local Chinese restaurant. After straining it, I started mixing it in with my fuel. I haven't come up with an exact formula yet, but it works and helps me stretch my fuel. The only drawback so far is every time I'm outside working I get a real hankering for an egg roll. :/
I was behind a guy in old green Mercedes at lights tons of black on his chrome bumper.he must do the same cause all i could smell was french fries, made me hungry as shit!!snookie pa💥👍💥
Taryl Your a gem !!! I was gonna toss my old torpeedy heater but tomorrow I'm gonna jump on it.. FWIW.. Jet airliners have this problem and at altitude, the algae w/ water can freeze in the fuel filters and even in the fuel tanks so usually the hydraulic system heat exchangers are in one of (or all) of the tanks to keep the fuel warm enough not to gel up and freeze.. We use a product called "Prist" to dry 'em out and kill the algae.. Same crap you get at Autozone "anti gel" diesel treatment.. so throw a little in the heater every once in a while.. Blessings from Nawthrn' MS.
Taryl you're awesome! You've unlocked the secrets of these machines. I had a Dayton unit that I curb picked almost 10 years ago, but I could never figure out what the problem was or understood just how these things worked. After I watched your video, I cleaned and adjusted the plug, blew out the nozzle and saw a tiny bit of dirt come out, and did a quick check of the air pressure, Plugged it in and said THERE'S MY DINNER! Thanks so much! Winter is just around the corner and I sure will need this. If you were a woman I'd kiss ya...but your not...so I won't.
Hello Taryl. I've watched your videos on the poop pump and then this video on the torpedo heater, man you have a variety of knowledge, you remind me of ,ME, I don't have your knowledge but when given the opportunity I learn how things work and am able to fix or point out the malfunction. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, you're very unselfish.
Thank you, sir. This helped me understand how these things work and Frankenstein a working heater together from 3 broken heaters I had in the shop here in Afghanistan.
At first when I started this video, I thought oh boy, here we go! I stopped it and read the first review, and the review was a guy really appreciative of your video, so I went back and watched it through! I got a kick out of it, and I thought I'd probably have done the same thing in my earlier years! LOL! I really liked the croissant wrench part, and it was really informative about everything! I hope everyone starts doing it like you do! Wait, no I don't, cause then I probably would be tryin to find yours again! Right on, carry on Taryl! 😎👍
I have one in my shop that's been sitting for 20 years give or take. Was fixin to start cleaning it up and figuring out if we can get it going. Thanks Taryl for the fine video
Thought I had cleaned the tip - until I watched this and realized it came apart. Exactly as you noted - plugged vanes in the nozzle - instantly fired up after cleaning, after 15 years of sitting ( and picked up at the dump). THanks for the help!
Hands down best video on "the guts" of these machines. You are mos-def right on 'nem boogers'. My newest heater had sat with 7 gals of k-1 in it for 1-1/2 yrs. it turned to total crap. I have those algae blobs in my tank and apparently they are the root cause of my dewalt 185kbtu sputtering and shooting flames every 2 seconds. Also my stored k-1 in my SHTF containers is now contaminated too. Inside my blue plastic fuel cans full of k-1 is a layer of black slime and flaky sediments. Thanks again for a great walk thru on this topic.
well thanks for the education master Taryl . I worked today on a 150,000 BTU Kerosene /diesel torpedo style heater by GUARDIAN i needed to use in my American friend's Garage so we can tackle his wife's Van and fix it , it was cold , found the motor and air pump were clogged up with nasty dirt and gunk like a crippled turtle trying to hide its turd on an icy lake ,also found out it's sparking , and working fine , but no fuel going in to the jet , so tomorrow I will fix that and follow your steps to his machine specs though and let you know . thanks a bunch again Master . love your videos and keep up the great work . yours : the Wacky Iraqi Bastard .
Wow, what a great instructional video. It gets scary taking something apart but you've taken all the mystery out so we can feel confident trying to repair our heaters.
That is how I learned so much in life, Don't be afraid to take stuff apart, As a kid that's how i learned, took stuff apart and learned what made them tic. and i had the mindset, that i could figure things out. or i found out in other ways. If it's Broke, you can't make it much worse than it is..lol
Y'all do some awesome videos. I'm working on one right now. Igniter lights up but don't see gas spraying. Already cleaned nozzle and checked lines and fuel filter. I'm thinking mine is the rotor. Needs to clean it up and try again. Already cleaned once but still didn't work. Anyways thanks for taking the time to make videos. Y'all do make the best ones. And taryl I do believe you can figure out a way to fix anything.
What a great diesel heather mechanic you are! I take off my hat to you sr! I have fixed a couple but I didn’t know all the aspects you cover! As I matter of fact I got a bigger one that I haven’t able to make it work! But now that I watch your video I’m pretty sure I will make it work you covered everything from A to Z thank you very much!
Great video! Super informative and amuzing to beat! My fan wouldn't turn, easily anyway. Moisture made its way to the pump housing where it rusted and wouldn't allow the rotor to turn. After a few hours of sanding the rust away with 600 and 1500 grit paper rust was mostly removed. Reassembled and torpedo started right up. Nice to have heat again!
I had 2 of those to work on, a Dakon and a Sears, neither used the spark plug, but had the adjustable electrodes. Dakon had been out of business and the sears was old and the transformer had gone bad. We had a plumbing place across the alley and one of the guys there helped me keep them working with furnace parts. That was 25 or more years ago, the fuel must have had more additives in it, because I never did have any trouble with the "boogers", good video.
Yes Terrell you sure do some awesome videos I watch your stuff all the time you're a great man for sharing your knowledge with all of us out here I'm pretty mechanical myself and I enjoy listening to your videos which are usually always on the money
Thanks Taryl! 100,000 BTU Reddy Heater stopped firing in the shop. Went though it all like ya did in yer video. Purrs like a kitten! Apparently it had multiple issues. No more! You da BEST!
Best heater video I've seen. Thanks friend for the lesson. I have two of these units35,000 btu also a 100,000 btu unit that need some help. Now I know how to attend them correctly. Cheers!
PA LAWN Guy, Taryl it was nice to hear you say "If you know how it works you can fix anything" I told my students that for 40 years, but it was harder all the time to get them to believe it. The education system are coming closer all the time to strictly "rote" learning. We are in trouble for sure as a nation. The students come closer all the time to not be able to think for them selves. The statement I would hear all the time was "just tell us exactly what you want and we will give it back to you". The implication being, don't ask us to think. Are they all this way? No, a very few can.
I'm a refrigeration mechanic..so I'm handy. This was a great video for sequence of events. And operation. Sincerely...even after 7 years you've helped another person out. Good on you man! Glory to heros Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦
Thanks Tayrl. It must to warm for my heater to turn on. I did do exactly what you had mentioned to check. I can see the ignitor glowing and the fan spinning. I saw fuel being sprayed into the tunnel
Thank you sir for that video it was very informative, I was trying to understand how my heater actually brought the fuel to the nozzle and I couldn’t understand it. I think I’m gonna take my pump apart and inspect it.
Great video. I have a newer Dyna Glow Pro 135000 Will not fire up with top cover on. Remove top cover, and it fires up.but with a lot of white smoke. Thanks for any ideas.
Love the video! I have a question, I have a Master 135K BTU unit that burps with a flame every few seconds. Otherwise, it works fine. I've cleaned out most of what was on the video and repaired an air hose at the air pump. I'm trying to figger out how to get to the nozzle to blow it down as per the manual...it's different than the vid. And I will be cleaning fuel filter next. Also, since I've completed what I've done, I've kicked her back on and the pump seems to running much higher (supposed to be 5.5 psig but now at 6.9 psig). I'm gonna try the screw adjustment but didn't seem to help last night. Otherwise, this is running okay but the burping flame is spookin' the strippers.
Thank You for the Very Informative Video and for Helping me to Accept My New Dentures that I Am Having a Hard Time Getting Used To! I Will Try to Wurk on my Heater with the Info that You so Graciously Supplied!!
Good video , again. I got 2 of these Dyna-Glo ones, model KFA 50 H. And, i cleaned, checked, everything. Photocell, the air pump assembly / wipers, adjusted it to 1/5,000 at the top. Assembled all.... no go. FUSE , a small one, on circuit board, checked good. So, is there a replacement control board, or is it some other sensor....? Thanks, tanks alot for any info / education.
Great video, I have a master 150k torpedo heater from the mid 80's and it will run with the cover off but once i place the cover back on it blows smoke, i have replaced the the air filter, cleaned the air pump any idea whats causing it to not run with the cover,
check your air pressure, even if it is set to specs, adjust up/down - it should get worse in one direction and better in the other. Check for air flow blockage, check for proper fan speed (I don't know how - replace the motor). Replace the fuel nozzle.
Great Stuff Taryl, gonna go fix mine now I hope, Hey my brother in-law is a dentist, I'm gonna tell him to watch your videos cause the heater in his office smells like it's running rich on kerosene.
Love your videos reminds me of the old blacksmith shop I grew up in, and we worked on mowers and did welding. There was no heat in there and everyone that worked there had their own Salamander heater up there butt to stay warm. I have one question for I have one of those heaters that will run with the hood off but not with it on. What normally causes that ?
I have two torpedo heaters, both keep burning the little car fuse. I checked for any pinch or cut wires. Just as the fan starts to move blows the fuse. Is th fan motor shorting out?
good video taryl , had mine for years used to heat houses while I painted them one morning after a heavy dew I plugged it in and turned it on only to find smoke pouring out of electronic unit never ran again, sad because it was nearly new. do you think I can get it running again? was a black and white DESA approx 2003 vintage.
Yes! Saw it smoking sitting ten year's how would you begin? Clean tank and add filgter, only a few hours old when this happened. Luv Luv Luv yer show bet youget allot of hate mail from mower shop's lol
hey be very careful with that heater with paint fumes and paint thinner, you should see the heating dome at the end might seem like its getting extra red or even see flames coming out of the end a inch or 2 as it pumps air mixed with the paint fumes and inside a house after about 3 hours of running if you feel light headed, dude, stop and open windows to air it out, you can carbon monoxide yourself. you should know the light head feeling and it may affect your thinking ability. so just watch out you no go boom and no dinner or any more dessert for you. if you see flames coming out the end while your painting, this is the fumes burning in the air it is pumping, you might go extra large on the boom and need to paint a new house for some one.
Great and entertaining video Taryl! I fixed a cracked fuel line in a Dyno flo heater and its working great (output looks perfect) except for a small amount of fuel that appears at the end (output) of the heater after it runs for a few minutes. I checked the pressure ~4 psi and removed the nozzle and blew it out but the problem persists. Have you ever seen this? My guess is the nozzle is bad where it might spit fuel that is not ignited when running but its damn tricky to observe.
awesome video thanks for sharing. maybe you can give me a little insight? I have a 70,000 pro temp unit its more fatboy shaped than torpedo. I run it on diesel and neglected her. she seems to be running on half power and spitting out diesel from the front. is there 2 nozzles and maybe only 1 is burning fuel? im going to rip her down and clean her up. im guessing the design is a lil different but basically I hope I can figure it out . thanks
I have a reddy heater igniter type stay running with the lid off when I put the lid on it shuts off checked the pump it is pumping I need to check the pressure but if that is not it blew out the filters could it be that or something else what direction should i go instead of replacing a lot of parts . no boogers in the kerosene.
Hey I have a diesel heater which burns ok with the cover OFF, but it will not fire when the cover is mounted. Any clue? I have cleaned the pump as shown
This is great!! Haha!! I will ALWAYS watch a Taryl video. Sidenote... I've just rebuilt a heater much like this but I can't get the pressure to go down to 3psi it's almost at 4 psi and I can't get it to go any lower any ideas? Flames are shooting out the end and it's running rich 🔥
I know this is an older video according to the date 7 years ago but I have a question about the air pump assembly on the end of the motor do you have a video that you really talk about that and how it all works my biggest question is is everything supposed to be flush with the rotary that holds the veins thank you
I've worked on all kinds of jet heaters, and know about the crud in tanks,, TIP >> I drain out all the fuel, then i throw in about 2 or 3 pounds of fish tank gravel ( you can use other small gravel ) Then i add in about half a gallon of kerosene, I then slosh the stuff back n forth for a while.. This helps scrub all that crap loose. Then i drain it all out, and use my air hose nozzle that has a siphon. that way all the fuel and crud gets sucked out.. then i use an old shop vac to suck out all the gravel. once all that is that is done, it looks like a new tank inside. It's a job, but it works. Now here is My Issue. i got this one heater that has me baffled.. It's getting a good spray of fuel , it has good ignition, and plenty of airflow from the fan,, but that damn thing will not light to save it's life, you can see the cone of spray and the spark is in the spray, but all you see is barely a bit of a blue flame, But that's it.. It is as if the fuel was not flammable, but it definitely is flammable. So, Why the hell won't this damn thing light ? Hopefully you have something i can try. Thanks.
Reddy heater model r150a . replaced photo cell, checked filter and all the other things you said. all ok. will run for 5 or so minutes, then shuts off. the relay pops and will not reset for 10 minutes and then dose the same thing. what would be your best guess to replace?
Thank you! I paid a ton of money for one of these 2 winters ago for $$$$$. It decided not to work this fall, Ive been freezing my nuts off for the past couple months.
Taryl fixes all do you know if i can run diesel in them and also could i run diesel in a wick type heater normally put kerosene but its so expensive expensive
Is it just diesel that makes algae boogers in the tank or does kerosene too? I’ve been running diesel cuz it’s cheaper but if I knew kerosene or furnace fuel oil didn’t grow algae it would be worth the extra $.
Awesome and very instructional video 👍👍 New subscriber here! I have the one with a spark plug. And it says "Add Gasoline". So, it is not a diesel/Kerosene unit. Just got it from my Father in Law, who had not used in years! Just settin' in a pike of other stuff. It's a Toro Porta-Heat. It is Not igniting. Now I know to check the back of the motor, since that is the pump that appears to be the "Heart" of that darn thing! Also it doesn't have the Photo Cell doohickey, but does have something that looks like one of them "Ant Traps" with two wires connected ed to it. I presume it does a similar thing to ensure there's a flame or something? Can you tell me what that is? And if that is something I can clean?
If the rotor kit, filters, and plug/pump adj. kit has be replaced. the recommendation of the heater is 8.5psi and I only can get 4-6psi what else could be wrong?
Years ago, borrowed the brother-in-laws old second hand torpedo heater and ran it til it quit. Never did give it back and later just threw it out..... Probably had a clogged filter. But, later he got even when he borrowed my brand new generator and ran it for over a month straight building his house. Had to threaten him with sending his sister back home to get him to return it. Generator showed up the next day.......
My Remington won't stay running with the top ON. It has a hood style cover with a hinge. It runs perfect with the lid open, but literally shuts off when you put the lid down. You can hear the motor pitch change like the air flow is restricted. I checked and cleaned everything, but it still does that. It's weird.
I was able to repair my torpedo heater - thanks to you! Your initial message of "First, understand HOW is works." was the key.

Well I just found a new favorite channel!! Funny as hell but also the most helpful. Thank you Taryl. Also, do you know Jimbob?
great information! Thank you very much! can you please provide a link for where you get replacement parts?
Great video! Í have that small unit and always wondered exactly how they operated, but too lazy to ever take it apart to see.
Awesome video! My shop is nice and toasty because of it.
Very very informative and love the little funny stuff
16:03 'asphaltenes'. That's the 'sludge' he's talking about. Great info in this video!
Great video Taradactal!! My heater comes on but wont ignite . Hopefully I can fix it..
Great video, I have a master 150k torpedo heater from the mid 80's and it will run with the cover off but once i place the cover back on it blows smoke, i have replaced the the air filter, cleaned the air pump any idea whats causing it to not run with the cover,
Mine as well
check your air pressure, even if it is set to specs, adjust up/down - it should get worse in one direction and better in the other. Check for air flow blockage, check for proper fan speed (I don't know how - replace the motor). Replace the fuel nozzle.
Man, thanks to this video, I actually located the issue with my heater and fixed it.
Damn!! I thought we were gonna see the girls!!!!! good video!!!
Good job, good info and funny. Have a good one guys.
Excellent presentation Taryl!
Great video. Learned a lot
Where are you getting parts from? Need a pump air filter and a fuel filter. The fuel filter looks special.
good video taryl , had mine for years used to heat houses while I painted them one morning after a heavy dew I plugged it in and turned it on only to find smoke pouring out of electronic unit never ran again, sad because it was nearly new. do you think I can get it running again? was a black and white DESA approx 2003 vintage.
+David Moore Could be curcuit board. Is it one with a circuit board?
Yes! Saw it smoking sitting ten year's how would you begin? Clean tank and add filgter, only a few hours old when this happened. Luv Luv Luv yer show bet youget allot of hate mail from mower shop's lol
And my dinner, more please!
hey be very careful with that heater with paint fumes and paint thinner, you should see the heating dome at the end might seem like its getting extra red or even see flames coming out of the end a inch or 2 as it pumps air mixed with the paint fumes and inside a house after about 3 hours of running if you feel light headed, dude, stop and open windows to air it out, you can carbon monoxide yourself. you should know the light head feeling and it may affect your thinking ability. so just watch out you no go boom and no dinner or any more dessert for you. if you see flames coming out the end while your painting, this is the fumes burning in the air it is pumping, you might go extra large on the boom and need to paint a new house for some one.
This is a fantastic video
Great and entertaining video Taryl! I fixed a cracked fuel line in a Dyno flo heater and its working great (output looks perfect) except for a small amount of fuel that appears at the end (output) of the heater after it runs for a few minutes. I checked the pressure ~4 psi and removed the nozzle and blew it out but the problem persists. Have you ever seen this? My guess is the nozzle is bad where it might spit fuel that is not ignited when running but its damn tricky to observe.
Interesting. Have not seen the insides before.
it was the fuel line hose , it was gone inside the tank ( deteriorated ) , installed a new one and worked like a charm . thanks Master
Hey, thanks for the update, Wacky!
Found 5 Stink bugs! 2 in the photo sensor!! Working like new. Thanks!
When he said “the girls in the barn” I thought dairy cows, not strippers lol
I did too, until he continued.
Get ur mind in the gutter! Lol
Stripping a dairy cow teat is a part of milking a cow.
I thought chickens hens
Great vid and channel! Those friggen choppers are killin me dude!
Got my heater working again! Much thanks and subbed!
What do the slots behind the motor do? Mine are jammed. Do not move freely. It starts up but no fire im assuming those slots act with the compressor.
Where has this guys channel been my whole life on RUclips?
Great information and video easy to understand. I had a air leak at hose .
awesome video thanks for sharing. maybe you can give me a little insight?
Flames are shooting out the end and it's running rich 🔥
choke the inflow of air (replace the air filters) and check your seals, also check your gap setting is right on the air pump for your model.
Do the propane heaters work the same, maybe do a video on one of them. Thanks
I know this is an older video according to the date 7 years ago but I have a question about the air pump assembly on the end of the motor do you have a video that you really talk about that and how it all works my biggest question is is everything supposed to be flush with the rotary that holds the veins thank you
Great video! Made me laugh and also the best info I have found. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your video. I enjoyed watching. Take care and God Bless.
Also check rear cover can crack no pump pressures
Do you have a maintenance guide on the propane torpedo heater
It's getting a good spray of fuel , it has good ignition, and plenty of airflow from the fan,, but that damn thing will not light to save it's life, you can see the cone of spray and the spark is in the spray, but all you see is barely a bit of a blue flame,
But that's it..
I have a brand new heater that I bought, but it’s not working. It looks like it’s the pump so where do I get a brand new pump from?
Great detailed and easy to understand video! Thank you!
Mine was simply a partially clogged nozzle. Took it off ran a carburetor jet cleaner wire through it worked fine after that.
Excellent video thank you
Thanks for the knowledge
HI I have one that won't run more then a minute or two with the cover on take the cover off runs fine
0:24... "out in the barn to keep the girls warm" ??? Think we may have just solved a few missing persons cases. LOL
Awesome and very instructional video 👍👍
New subscriber here!
It's weird.
You have great videos, thank you.
