There really is no being "more resilient" in a toxic work place. Who ever is in power, or has power, at the company will push you further and further to the brink, until either you are fired or you just snap. Once thw target is on your back, it will never go away. When you get to the point that you are breaking down emotionally and your body is telling you "no more", it is time to get out and quick. I have been there, and man... it really is a hard thing to go through.

Hey Megan, I hope that wherever you are you get the chance to read this.
I was in the exact same position as you in October 2019 when I decided to leave my old employer. I had dealt with a lot of verbal abuse, stressful workloads, and unpaid compensation from my old boss because he was just an awful person who had no respect for me. My old boss knew exactly the right things to say to convince me that working for him was the best opportunity that I was going to get, and my anxiety was always through the roof because of how I felt trapped.
After my boss decided to report me to our HR department for being "distracted" and "failing to meet expectations", I found the strength and love from my family, friends, and a few coworkers to say "enough is enough". I immediately started going to interviews during my free time, and once I felt confident I was getting an offer from someone else I walked out on my boss in the middle of the day. I handed my resignation letter to HR, told them everything that had been going on, and that if I didn't receive my fair compensation for the unpaid wages, I'd file a suit with the Department of Labor.
Fast forward to today, I'm in a new position that I started back in November, and it is all I could have ever dreamed of getting. My new bosses are far kinder and respectful, and they're paying me 20% more than what my former boss was giving me. No verbal abuse, no complaints about being "distracted", and no working extra hours off the record. I've gotten great reviews from them all around. I also received a settlement from my old company, and the amount they gave me was much bigger than what I was expecting.
The point I'm trying to make is that being in a toxic work environment has a devastating effect on your self-esteem, and it's difficult right now for you to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You need to surround yourself by people who care about you in order to find the courage to say "no". There are thousands of other employers out there that will respect you more for what you bring to the table. You can do this.

Both of their pieces of advice were super important. I suffered from a toxic workplace, and started to slip into anxiety and depression. Eventually I did quit, but a couple of years later I was faced with the same predicament.
Some situations require you to change the environment, and some require you to change you. And some require both. But regardless, it’s okay to leave or stay, if that’s YOUR choice.
The Lord has allowed me to be in a position where I can create workplace environments, versus dealing with them. But if I ever needed to head back into a place where toxicity is present, I understand now that I determine what I allow to hurt me. That truly goes beyond field, occupation, or accreditation.
Great pieces of advice, y’all. Yet another great segment.

I could see how that could come across as brushing the situation off. But what he means is that if she stands up for herself and says, "I'm not going to let you hurt me, and you can't break me," then she can take her power back and find a new job without worrying that she's good enough. It's basically restoring confidence and establishing emotional boundaries.

I think phrases like “don’t let it get to you”, “just brush it off” and “be thick skinned” are sometimes used by people as a way of getting people to accept unacceptable behavior...This type of behavior is not okay and I was pleased that Dave gave her the clarity that she desperately needed.

I had a corporate job, that was insanely stressful. It was such a high stress job that I even in one year went through 5 bosses people making 300k a year leaving for lowering paying jobs because they couldn't handle environment stress. So our jon was stressful and then going through so many different bosses breakdowns before they leave. It was alot I cried on my way home everyday from work. I went from never being sick once a year to getting sick twice a month sometimes flu, cold, strep throat in my 20s and my health was deteriorating. I prayed for months about the situation im a hard worker so even if I don't like a job I still give it my all mind, will etc one day I was called into my office and was fired for something I didn't do, my boss tried to fight executives about it since he knew it wasn't me. But the executives still decided to fire me. I cried I didn't know what to do. But that was truly best thing that happened to me I got a job I truly love now and sometimes prayers are answered differently than we wthink because I don't think I would have left if I wasn't fired. The devil you know is sometimes more comfortable place its scary to jump. I am glad I was fired now im happy where I work, when I leave work I leave it there no work stress I'm so much happier! 😄

This is a topic that I've been in a lot in my jobs I've had since 15 years old. I've had great managers and bad ones. I've only quit and walked out of one job. Everyone else I've done my due courtesy of 2 weeks notice. But that one job, the manager kept yelling at everyone for no reason. I asked why he was yelling, and he got even more mad. I suggested maybe if he wanted better workers that he doesn't treat them like dirt, dirt doesn't do anything, people will work. Treat us like people and we can help you. If you tell us why you're so angry, maybe we can all help, so that we can tolerate coming to a hot warehouse and pulling orders for 8 hours a day. But he wouldn't budge. He called me a list of names, and other stuff. I called one of the other managers of the company and told him what I said, and that I'm leaving that day. I sent an email to HR. And said bye to everyone else. That company is now under and have declared bankruptcy. Even more sad is the manager that was amazing and had great growth died in a motorcycle accident a week ago.
On the other hand my bosses now own a soccer shop in which I worked my way up to being a manager. They started with nothing and did it themselves. 4 years it took to become an associate to a manager. And along the way, they kept teaching me how to be better and helping me with my faults. And as time went on I got more and more responsibility. All of this in California, the hardest place to have a small business. Yet they have 4 locations. They exhibit what I want to be as a manager able to teach others under me, be the example, hold accountability for everyone, and push ourselves to do more to earn more. But everyone has faults, just depends on if you want to live with them or not. And that I think is something you have to go to God about. Pray about direction and if you are doing what He wants, because He knows all, He can direct you the best way.

I remember when I worked in a toxic work environment. I went from never having issues with my blood pressure, to having constantly elevated blood pressure. I went from rarely having heart palpitations (I do have a mitreal valve prolapse so I do get them) to having full blown panic attacks almost daily before work. And I went from being driven, solving problems and motivated to absolutely underperforming my own expectations. When I left, the blood pressure and anxiety resolved themselves, though it took about a year to fully recover from the anger I had at those people from the trauma.
Although it’s hard to hear, you really do have to shift your understandings of who people are. Powerless people try to exert power over people. And hurt people hurt other people. That’s all there is to it. Now when I come across people like that, I don’t engage and I learned the skills to identity those people early and insulate myself from that behavior and those people. And you absolutely need to leave an environment like that FOR YOUR HEALTH.

Human work is not a social event. It's a detached business exchange where we sell our labor and expertise for money. We don't need to like or even truly know our customers (bosses) who buy our labor or talents. But once that line is crossed and other, unrelated considerations are brought into this business relationship, then it becomes as potentially messy as any personal relationship. That's when all bets are off. We have forgotten how to remain professional at work these days
