Its 2024 and I still come back here. One of the most underrated bands of all time. The friction in the chemistry, the complex, chaotic beauty of the music, the energy. This band was, is and always will be perfection. The band the taught me, 24 years ago, that doing your own thing, your own way, is the most beautiful thing
i saw them at the London Astoria around this time and it's still prob the single best show i've ever seen. absolute, thrilling, barely controlled chaos.
Rarely ever do you see so much raw energy coming out of five people on stage. They are drowning in this song, Omar forgets to sing in front of the mic, Cedric forgets the lyrics, Jim forgets to sing. This incredible performance had beet floating around RUclips in potato quality for years. Thank you so much BBC for reviving it in all its glory.
The guitar is Jim's Gibson 61' SG Jr. He said his parents bought it for him when his guitar playing became more serious and it was his favorite. Ultimately it was lost (I think during the Sparta days) when their van was broken in to.
Not sure why there are not many more tributes to this Greatness?? This band changed my life when I was a teen. One of the most under-rated bands of all time!
The way the barely coherent feeding-back guitar rejoins back into the chorus around 0:58 is the best example of why the insanity of ATDI works. It's mental beyond comprehension, but it's beautiful order out of chaos.
From a guitarist's point of view, even though Cedric doesn't usually play guitar, he's surprisingly good at rhythm guitar, and add to that, his singing, making it all pretty impressive. Jim Ward sounds really cool on keys. Omar sounds good in this too. I don't know why in the "One Armed Scissor" performance, Omar is mostly doing feedback, then eventually throwing his guitar, and dancing the rest of the way! I want to see the "One Armed Scissor" performance in this quality! They all had this crazy energy and were super interesting to watch. This is a great version of Rolodex Propaganda, though. Better than the studio version, IMO.
I think a string or two went out of tune early on in One Armed Scissor. It seemed like he tried to play around it at first, then gave up and went wild instead lmao
Paul and Tony never get the credit they deserve and are always overlooked in favour of Omar, Cedric and Jim due to the split. Enfilade is a fantastic track and their rhythm section makes the track complete. The drumming is amazing on that track.
A lot of people kinda think it was just omar and cedric being weird but honestly that performance was not their fault imo. Omar's guitar seems to have some sort of fucked jack or something cause you'll see him fiddling with it a lot when it gets really feedback heavy especially when he plays pattern against user. This performance was before he started getting other guitars so he only had the two squires. The video shows that his guitar goes out of tune and the feedback starts bleeding in so he quickly swaps to a different one and then the high e-string breaks off so he just gives up (because he has no more guitars at this point) and picks up a tamborine. Its actually kinda cool that although the performance was basically over they managed to kinda play it off.
That makes a lot of sense that the jack for the guitar was all messed up. It’s happened to me live once, so I understand the frustration that Omar must’ve had during One-Armed Scissor.
omar sounds unwound as hell here, down to the feedback. that said, both bands ran at roughly the same time to each other, so it's just great minds thinking alike, really.
Somehow forgot Cedric plays rhythm on this. Even stranger in HD. Probably a good thing only grainy videos of ATDI existed on YT when I was a teenager because the 16 yo fangirl me couldn’t handle the HD Cedric lol
This is intense. While I appreciate that, I gotta say for me, I prefer the studio version. I'll never forget the first time I saw them live, it was a shock to my system.
Well yeah. The whole album was produced by Ross Robinson. And the studio version has Iggy Pop on it. Of course it’s going to be better than a live rendition
@@michaelgraham9774 100% agree, Jim’s vocals are fucking amazing live, it’s got so much raw emotion. I’d even argue that Jim’s vocals sound better than Cedric’s.
BRO i was honestly surprised when i saw this, at 0:04 you can see Jim accidentally pick up the wrong instrument but he corrects himself and you can see Cedric get kinda pissed at him so he double checks him when he looks left and back right. funny enough this is when Omar and Cedric weren't getting along with Jim which is unfortunate because it foreshadows what happens in the future. thankfully TheMarsVolta is coming back soon so im looking forward to it.
Cedric fucked up more than his fair share of songs with his shenanigans. I don’t think he’s in any position to complain to Jim. Jim, Tony and Paul kept every song from falling apart.
Saw them at T in the park the same year, sandwiched between aereogramme and my vitriol. Going into a random tent to get out the rain changed my entire musical taste.
Seeing this in HD is unreal. This is such an incredible and important document, of a band in their prime, a fireball that burned brightly and suddenly went out way too soon
This is genuinely the greatest performance in Jools Holland history. I'd say it's the best live performance in TV history if not for the Wolf Like Me performance TV On The Radio did on Letterman.
Just stumbled upon this...feels like a fever dream seeing Cedric play haha, it feels like seeing Ozzy or Robert Plant with a guitar. Honestly would have been pretty cool if he occasionally did that with The Mars Volta...they have so many goddamn sounds it would probably help.

Amazing to see Cedric playing a guitar in HD
Right. They need to re-upload one armed scissor.
Especially compared to the other version they had on RUclips. Amazing difference in quality

So unusual.

They did Jim dirty in this mix
His vocals are never loud enough live. He's always screaming until his neck muscles bulge but the mic volume isn't loud enough. lol
0:04 Jim grabs the tambourine instead of the maracas haha
Hahaha good catch!
I think this may be my favourite RUclips video ever. Every thing about it is close to perfection for me.
The fact that they are still together and playing these songs makes me cry literally
Amazing to see Cedric playing guitar! 🖤
love how it escalates immediately from the start, what a badass band ATDI was

Yeah Omar's licks on the chorus are beautifully melodic, giving the song an even bigger sense of "beauty among the roughness".

It just sucks

Coz they lost Iggy along the way
One of my favorites from that album.
