What song do YOU think changed music? Please comment below!
Baby shark......
Nothing else matters - Metallica. Talk about bringing Metall into mainstream ...
Fleetwood Mac's You Make Loving Fun. Christine McVie wasn't featured on many songs on Rumours, but she was as good as Stevie Nicks...just in a different way.
Warren, I truly enjoy these videos on the historical and creative context of music. Thanks for all of them in the past, and for those that are coming in the future. My one wish for you, is that all your other wishes come true.
When The Levee Breaks... so much going on in that song technically and musically
Let's not also forget Alanis's amazing ability to sound nearly exactly the same live as she does in the studio.
Man... hearing that solo'd vocal gives me chills! Absolutely love Alanis
Yes, incredible vocals!
@Dustin - Her vocals in a live version I'd heard many years ago of 'Not The Doctor' had actually moved me to tears! Something that's definitely not been happening a lot throughout my life! 🙂
@@Producelikeapro Almost moved me to tears.
I have listened to many varied kinds of music over the decades.
I haven't heard You Oughta Know in a long time, but remember how much I liked the raw power of the lyrics the first time I heard it.
I remember it as though I'd just heard it yesterday. Put the lyrics together with the musicianship, and she has a solid tune that will always be in my memory.
If only I had a cat called Zildjian?
Listening to that vocal track actually brought a tear to my eye.
It’s truly wonderful
I miss the days of things not being so perfect. Music is emotion and if you take and make it perfect, we lose those amazing performances. The days that we would record without a click. Choruses would speed up and vocalists that would be completely emotional as they sang. Listening to the soloed vocal of Alanis, was unbelievable, it gave me the chills. Thanks for this vid. Warren!
"Perfect is the enemy of good..."
YES!
Perfection is the enemy of the good. It means one thing in IT, but something very different in music. It's about authenticity.
@@jnavillus Technical prowess is not the point.
Wow, the isolated vocal gave me chills!
Being from Ottawa, I was one of many people who met Alanis over the years. She was always a ridiculously nice person. My room mates and I were all invited to her first CD release party well before she hit the big time. I’m still amazed by how far she managed to go.
By 1996, Alanis was all over the TV and radio, and I was getting a bit tired of her, so I was less than thrilled when my Mum bought Jagged Little Pill. I came home a bit stoned one day and Mum was playing it. I just stopped and went 'whoa!' Like I say, I'd heard her songs on the TV and radio, but Mum had these HUGE speakers and this song was blasting out. It sounded insane! I actually sat down and listened to the whole damn album with her and loved it. Still do. My personal favourite has to be Head Over Feet, but this is a killer track. And Right Through You could have easily been a single.
Alanis is an incredible woman! This is a welcome surprise to see her song in here. That album was HUGE and so well written
Absolutely massive talent and changed a whole generation with this album!
One of my old-time favourites. The song and, specially, the amazing Alanis. I had the pleasure to see her live sometime in the second half of the 1990's, in Faro, Portugal. It started pouring down as she kicked off and the roadies had to scramble to get plastic covers for the amps and other gear. Wind blowing in gusts. Quite the storm, for our standards at least, as we hardly ever get one around here. But she didn't stop. She was soaking wet after the second song, well the whole band were, yet they just kept going for another hour and a half, like they owned the universe. Relentless. Demolishing. Unbelievable. And so gracious at the same time.
Ok you just totally ripped me open when you played her isolated voice. I just broke down in tears hearing that for all the reasons you said. It's raw and powerful but smart and beautiful at the same time. I have been a major fan since I first heard You Oughta Know when I was 24 years old. I always gravitate toward female voices, but no one has ever sung or written the way she does. Combined with unmatched instrumentation, the effect is unparalleled.
That last "Oughta Know" on it's own at the end of the song makes my hair stand on end. She puts everything into it.
Only a handful of albums have sold a million copies in Australia (and two of those are Abba compilations by the way) but 'Jagged Little Pill' is one of the very few. That album was everywhere back in the mid-90's and the CD would appear in op-shops (thrift/good will stores) years later completely knackered -- you never found one in good condition, they'd all been played to death. It truly was a phenomenon. Those isolated vocals were spine-chilling. Stellar video once again Warren.
For anyone who's interested, the biggest selling record in Australian history is 'Bat Out of Hell' by Meat Loaf.
Dare I say that this is the best, most expressive, vocal performance in the entire history of popular music?
Your production explanation is so perfect, but your personal experience spoken at the end was a HIGHLIGHT to bookend this time in Music History!
Wow! Thanks ever so much! That really means a lot
Many people don’t know that: but Alanis lived here in Germany for a while. Her father has to serve the Canadian airforce, which was stationed here in my hometown “Lahr”. We were a bit proud that such a big international Rockstar was raised in our streets. Rumour has it, that Alanis is still visiting her Nany from time to time.
In 1995 I was only 5 years old. Didn’t know anything about music. But still remember when “you oughta know” came on the radio, I just loved it.
Years later, when I did go to music college, I actually played that song at a exsam, because of the funky Basslines of Flea.
As a Canadian this video was mandatory viewing.
I remember reading about the recording that she was exhausted and trembling after her vocal take!
Man, I had that legendary album on repeat! Great songs, writing, playing, singing, production!
This was gold again, Warren! 👍👍
Thanks ever so much Tim!
Alanis’s anger is so satisfying, and hearing the organ instrumental gave my goosebumps, and the instrumentation in general is just *chefs kiss*.
It’s song that sounds so 90’s but has aged incredibly!
I had worked with Glen as an engineer for 5 years on various projects in the 80s. One thing you can count on with Glen as a producer is he has a talent for knowing when the take and energy is right. He always said to me, "we never make demos!" Why redo it? You can't get the 1st take energy twice. Massive respect for my pal Glen and this record, it's so him wanting the artist to be spontaneous.🤘Thanks for what you do Warren!
This recording has so much energy and still sounds fresh today. What a fantastic track.
Agreed 100%!
Alanis and Dolores Riordan are uncopiable...!
You are absolutely on point when you say perfection is so boring...!!
Agreed 100%!
The very first time I'd heard this song was as the opener to a free compilation CD from a Rolling Stone magazine in '95, and I loved it right away. Not long after, there was a very energetic live show on the TV, and yes her rhythm section at that time were Taylor Hawkins (dr) and Chris Chaney (b), and this blast of energy totally blew me away! 🤩 Christmas was just around the corner, so I asked my family to please get me 'Jagged Little Pill' as a present; After I did get it from my Mum and listened to it for the first time, I was actually terribly underwhelmed, because the songs sounded so 'tame', compared to the live show I'd watched! 😅 Thank you for the video! Great to hear the isolated tracks and thus things I'd never noticed before! 😊👍
That voice still gives me goosebumps.
Dude, I just LOVE your videos. The production value is just top-shelf. The writing, the delivery, on-screen presence, the storytelling, the CG, the video quality, the *decision making* in what to cover. Just always so well done. (FYI I’m only a low-voltage Alanis fan)
Alanis and Nirvana was the music that opened up Central Europe . The rawness, the angst, the reaction and the grunge were so relevant at that time
This Album is amazing, Alanis wrote timeless songs! Thank you for another incredible episode Warren!
Thanks ever so much Ady!
It would be good to look at the whole album. There are some wonderful songs on there
I remember cycling to school with this cd on my discman with You Oughta Know on repeat back in 1995….one year later I saw her playing it live at the Belgium Torhout festival with Taylor Hawkins on drums….it was an explosion of energy
She will be studied by up and coming musicians and artists till the end of time. What a record. You're right, you won't get raw stuff like this today with all the over-producing that the industry has become today. Stuff of legend, Jagged Little Pill.
Such a nostalgic voice. Hearing Alanis reminds me of my childhood. I remember hearing her other song Ironic a lot on the radio. I miss those days.
This whole album was such a game changer. One of the few times in my life I heard a song and said "what the hell was that?". Bought the CD and played it again and again.
One of my favourite records of all time. Her performance of Hand in my Pocket at the Brit awards in ‘95 with Taylor on drums blew my mind as a 14 year old just starting out as a song writer. While my mates spent the mid 90’s discussing which Spice Girl they liked best I couldn’t see past Alanis! The best gig I’ve ever been to as a paying punter was Alanis at Manchester Apollo in the early 2000s. I’ve also had the privilege of working on a couple of Alanis’ tours over the years and she’s brilliant and absolutely lovely. Thanks for this vid Warren!
The guitar part is absolutely sublime. I’ve been admiring it since it was released. Brilliant.
I've listened to this album over and over and the energy it gives off still has the same effect on me today after almost thirty years. Thank you for your, always, excellent review !
I'd had completely forgotten what a massive talent Alanis is. Great analysis
She still brings it in her concerts!!! Love her!!
Marvellous!
Completely exquisite video. This chap is so articulate, impassioned, funny, real. Love this channel.
Wow! That’s very kind of you! Thanks ever so much
I was 22-23 when "You Oughta Know" was released. I had heard anger and angst in Nirvana, Pearl Jam and those bands. Men were allowed to be angry. It was a selling point.
Mainstream music did not allow women to be assertive and angry. Alanis was shocking for the raw punch and emotion she showed in her delivery and lyrics. I mean 10 seconds in and I was hooked as a young man. Alanis was PISSED and could make a good point.
Kurt Cobain had hooked into my disillusionment. Alanis did that for many of the young women I knew. It was brash and empowering for them.
This song was amazing as was the album. That was a fantastic period in music. Every other day a great band put out great music. It would take up too much space to name all of them. The 90’s ruled!!
I had a friend back in the days, who was a classical piano player. He grew up with classical music, and that's basically all he knew. But when he heard the "jagged little pill" for the first time, it was such a revelation to him, he became a huge Alanis fan. He ended up giving out the CD to all of his friends, because it had such an impact on him :)
Compare that to anything that was released in the last 10 years or so. I doubt there was a single song that could have had a similar impact on people.
Ah, the good ole' times, where music was not primarily a means to becoming rich, but a means for self expression :) I feel genuinely sorry for those Gen Y/Z kids, who have to grow up listening to crap music. The music you listen to during your adolescence is the music that has the biggest impact on you. We were lucky enough to get socialised with some of the best music that has even been created. Todays kids get socialised with total crap. No wonder they can't come up with anything of musical relevance, as they simply don't know any better...
Wow! As a 90’s musician and in my late teens this song played a huge part of many of our lives. The album was on repeat on my tape player, yes tape! Thanks again Warren.
I can swear I’ve heard two different versions of this song with different bass (especially that short lick at the break after the first chorus).
Have I gone mad?
And gee… who didn’t have a huge crush on Alanis in those days?!? Amazing!❤
Yes you probably have heard 2 versions. They are both on the album. The "Jimmy the Saint Blend" is the second with more prominent bass, mentioned in the video at 19.10.
Well researched retrospective! I’m a Toronto musician and had access to see the process that resulted in Jagged Little Pill. She had an amazing team in place. Talented, critical, and hard working. Success seemed inevitable…. in a way. 🧐 Interesting that ‘that team’ of people couldn’t recreate the magic for other artists as effectively as with Alanis.
There is not much that I can add except that I still have Little Jagged Pill on CD and it gets played in full every now and then, along with the wonderful Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. I've been lucky (through work) to listen to a lot of multitracks in my time but so thank full that you were able to share You Oughta Know in this video. I had no idea what so ever that Flea was on bass and that what he played was just so damn funky. Fantastic video Warren, thank you so much.
Proud to be an Ottawanian because of her. What a great artist she is.
Fantastic! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
In my 55 years of life, I've listened to thousands of thousands of songs and have bought many records/CDs. In all of those records I bought and listened to over and over. I had only bought one CD that had a woman as the feature lead performer. That CD was Alanis Morissette. It was my main CD for many many months. I had the honor of introducing it to my kids a few months ago. They as well love it. To catch fire twice as she did is a hard task. So I only have that one CD. But man it's up there with many of the great ones for me. Thank you for this one. And man it would be great if you could do one of her songs for the academy to mix 🤓
Excellent tutorial! Alanis is an underrated superstar! Her cover version of "Dear Prudence" is genius!
It really is!
Aw man this is my fave song from that album, I remember buying it when I was a young teenager from my local record shop with my own money. It gave me goosebumps as this was the opening track and then the full album start to finish is just a masterpiece. I played it to death and it inspired me to write music with that kind of attitude. What an absolute legend is oor Alanis 🖤
The vocal and lyrics on this song blew me away, raw emotion......brilliant and never replicated........
Warren this is one of your best anaysis vids too, well done you and your team.......i gotta sign up to your courses......thank you so much for these videos.....
Wow! Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
Alanis's isolated vocals show all her breathy power, fraility & riding on the edge style;just amazing! that was what was so instantly appealing to me when i 1st heard her!
Flea's bass part is the best part of this song, great playing, great sound
Indeed, song first, always, then what's played on it!
The best thing about Flea's bass on this is that it moves the song along without dominating the sound. He always does that so well.
Was looking for this comment! Killer bass line! 💯
Absolutely loved the music breakdown. You, my friend, have a new sub! Can't wait to see more!
Man...The catches and breathing sounds in her isolated vocal are just chilling...
Till this day when I listen to this song I just can't help but get incredibly touched by the performance [lyrics, vocals, production] and the raw energy! So cathartic!!!
Such authenticity and life in the music! The chorus is like a slap in the face and then you are sitting there when the verse comes back kind of in shock. Such a great use of energy contrast! Great one to discuss Warren!
The vocal is absolutely unbelievably powerful and awesome!!
I remember when my mom bought this on cd back in the day... I had never heard anything quite like it. I have always been more of a metalhead, but I have a lot of respect for this record. It sort of seemed to come out of nowhere and instantly took over the airwaves. Lots of intense, pointed emotion on the record... It's raw, but at the same time is tempered with wisdom and intent, and "You Oughta Know" wasn't the only great song off of the record. It sort of sits with albums like Soundgarden's Superunknown where I almost forget it's not a greatest hits album, it just featured a lot of bangers. Truly an era-defining release.
I think her vocal on Forgiven is pretty amazing too. Whole album really, but that one stands out to me for some reason.
Fantastic work Warren! Keep on shining a light on these classics. Thank you.
A superb song. When it came out, the bar I used to hang out in, had Digital Music radio playing loud, through the sound system, and it rocked ya socks off with every other track they delivered (and no DJ interrupting the opening, or ending) and there was a lot of great stuff going on back then
I bought 'Jagged Little Pill' for my (now ex) wife, so I could listen to it again and again. I loved that album, I loved that song! ❤️
unreal.. so much power in that song, the vocals... I swear it could drag a battleship out of the water
Just the whole dynamic range of the song is incredible. Love it and still on my playlists today. Great to hear it stripped back and to hear things you miss in the mix.
first time hearing the isolated vocal, love the laboured breaths, really conveys the emotion
Thus is possibly one of the greatest bands no one ever heard of. Flea, Dave Navarro and Taylor Hawkins what show they could've put on in a parallel universe !!!!!!!!
You're 100% correct about today's vocal productions...boring ,Robotic ... produced to within an inch of their lives....not this track...RAW...ANGRY...PURE ENERGY & EMOTIONS. A rarity in today's music. Brilliant video
I had an ADAT based studio in Atlanta in the 90s (5 ADATS and the BRC). Back then there was always the analog vs. digital debate. When this album came out, I used it as a part of the studio demo .. it got us a lot of work and calmed the fear of ADATs and digital recording.
That bass sound that was captured, reminds me of Jaco Pastorius . Nice.
The story about the Subterranean performance you saw was so of its time and very true. We had moved from shoegaze to britpop and were used to either male fronted bands and front girls who’d want to drink you under the table and then Alains came crashing in and I, for one, was truly terrified.
An amazing song and to see her do it live is remarkable!
Yes, truly amazing experience
That isolated organ part is haunting.
Wake me up when this is the sort of music (especially production-wise) that is getting released again. Today's sanitized bs might work for kids and zombies but anyone who craves real human expression wants stuff like this. I don't use this word freely, but this is a masterpiece in all ways.
Great video, thanks Warren! This song stopped everyone in their tracks . . . it gave female singer/songwriters a licence to get tough and really speak their minds and be themselves. I was working with several at the time and it affected them all deeply. The other thing that had a real influence was the loop-based production - pretty soon everyone who came into my studio wanted those loopy grooves and I did a bunch of projects in that style over the next few years. Fun times!
Alanis. Pure LOVE. 💖
Yet another great video. Thanks. It’s amazing how breathy vocals can add attitude to a performance as proven here. I could also just listen to the backing tracks alone as they sound so good. Yes back in 1995 all we listened to was this album and Soundgardens Superunknown from the previous year.
We also Remember this Single back in Time at MTV / Ztv in Sweden! Everything you say is so important!! Love your Shannel , shares from Sweden !!! 👍🎶🥁
Great break down on this song Warren, your energy and delivery is absolutly perfect, keep up the great work.........
This was just MASSIVE in it's day. I remember living in a share-house with four other people when this came out - we had five copies of the album on CD. It got played all the time.
You’re the greatest Warren!!!
Thanks ever so much
JLP is an architype 'classic album'. I wish people similarly appreciated her many other albums since.
the hot signal in the voice track!! amazing!!!
Fantastic video. So much fun to listen to the raw tracks.
My copy of the album has the original version of song as well wich does not feature Flea and Dave yet. That version is missing a lot of the groove of the final version. They REALLY helped to bring the song to a higher level and make it this impactful first single that it was.
Those old live shows with Tayler on drums were just great as well. The whole band had so much power and expression. Alanis' music seemed to be so raw, fragile and honest. Loved it. Still do.
Flee's bassline really makes this song work.
Wonderful video!! Thank you kindly.
Loved getting to hear the break downs of all the music parts let alone the background story and process. Great video! 👊🧡👍
Amazing song. Amazing album
Thanks ever so much
Really enjoyed this video and learned a lot. You are always so well researched. Thanks
Thank you Warren, I really enjoyed that, so much to love and like in and about that song! A truly iconic album..
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Really dig this one, thanks Warren
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for this great video!!!!
A great song on a great album ...and now I live in Ottawa!
Great work as always Warren & thanks for your memories -- young women have *no* *idea* what music-by-women was like before this record and how it utterly changed, literally, the world.
Very well said and thanks for the great comment
such great research. Im glad to be a happy subscriber
Thanks ever so much
Great episode Warren!
Wow there is so much that’s amazing about this record!
Agreed 100%!
Thanks ever so much!
I grew up in Ottawa and Alanis was a couple years ahead of me at a rival high school. This album was the sound track of my adolescence. Minor point. Findland is spelled Finland. Keep making great videos
Damn, that isolated vocal is absolutely killer!
when i was a kid, i was listening to jagged little pill along side when the pawn.... by fiona apple. great time for this type of music.
Fantastic stuff Warren! A gem of an album and artist.
Thanks ever so much
I had no idea Benmont Tench played on this song. Awesome! Thanks for another great video!
