Unboxing Alabama: What It's Like Living In Alabama

- Is everyone in Alabama a redneck?
Is everyone in Alabama a bible thumper?
And is everyone in Alabama poor and fat?
Those are some terrible stereotypes, but we WILL address that and a whole lot more. So let’s drank some moonshine and listen to some Hank Jr. We’re fixinto unbox the state of Alabama!
Ahh what do you know. It’s a college football game. But not just ANY college football game. No siree. This is THE college football game. This is The IRON bowl. When Alabama plays Auburn every fall, you might as well shut the whole damn state down. It’s a big deal in these parts. Just about every single person in this state has a stake in the winner of The Iron Bowl. And you have to choose between these two teams. The winner gets bragging rights for a whole year.
If you’re all Roll Tide or all about War Eagle - well, that’s gonna define who you are as an Alabaman. People don’t care about where you work or where your home town is. It’s Auburn or Alabama. That’s it. And the allegiance to these teams is enough to cause a damn divorce.
Yeah, college football is bigger in this state than you could imagine. Alabama usually wins this game, but sometimes Auburn..uh oh. Damn. What am I gonna do for the next year. Looking down at laptop shaking head.
Well hell with this college football stuff. I don’t even like football anyways. I’m never watching another damn game again. Alabama has a lot of stuff to do, and has lots of various areas to live and is probably different than you thought. If you’re thinking about moving here, there’s a lot you should know about Alabama. That way you don’t have to annoy people at Piggly Wiggly with all your annoying questions.
This is Alabama.

As someone from a major northeastern city, I never thought I’d go to such great lengths to visit AL every winter. The slow pace and wooded areas make it very relaxing.
I am from the Chicago area and I’ve lived in Alabama for the past 15 years and it is far more inclusive of diversity than many northern states.
Diversity of race is overrated. Diversity of thought is far more important

Native Texan. Fell in love with Alabama at 6 years old on family vacation. After school, USAF 25 years. Still in love with Alabama. Retired, again, since 2003. South Baldwin County. From Ft Walton Florida. Not too far away. It’s a great place to be.
Love the pan handle! Moved to San Antonio from Ft Walton Beach about 4 years back.
@@chrisdraco1973 aka Lower Alabama. I have called San Antonio home too. After DS/DS, l was headed to Somalia, AF pulled me out and sent me to SA. After that, back to Hurlbert Field for more adventures. Always loved SA anyway. I love being an American. War Eagle.
I drove with everything I owned in my car from Atlanta to Dallas. One part of AL was so gorgeous that I almost stopped and stayed. Wish I had. Dallas is overpriced and too liberal and there are more rules via TX state law than I had anticipated. Getting my car in passing order for the safety inspection cost me over $300. Ridiculous.
@@genkiferal7178 What part almost made you stay? I'm researching now and Alabama is my current focus. Do you have just 1 more move in you? Home is such a wonderful place to find,.I've been looking for a very long time.
@@TheHope4abetterworld I was on Interstate 1-20 driving from Atlanta towards Birmingham (and then westward) and saw those huge hills and the forests and maybe a few creeks or rivers. That is the kind of land that calls me. I like mountains, but prefer large hills with streams/creeks running through them. It may've been part of federal or state parklands i was driving through.
Also, i stopped at Walmart for an hour's break and at another spot gassed up my car, and many of of the residents weren't wearing masks and that made me feel like it was a normal, mentally-healthy place. Covid mandates have crushed my soul. Not being able to see people's full facial expressions is something I find mentally-damaging.
I am going to stay in TX and hope to move to Piney Woods, an area where there are forests. I love hiking alone and foraging for mushrooms and walking among wildlife. My name 'feral' means uncivilized, untamed. I love nature. 'Bama had that, for sure.
I read up on that particular area, though, and saw that it may be unaffordable for me and many northeasterners and Californians are putting in expensive suburbs there. Most of the areas I wanted to move to have that problem -- liberals come in, raise prices, and destroy the very forests they moved there for.

I used to deliver frequently into Alabama. I'm a gay woman from New York city area. The people down there have always been extremely nice and welcoming. It shocked me the first few times but it quickly became one of my favorite states to drive into and hang out in.

I’m not going to lie, I was expecting you to rip Alabama a new one. This is actually one of the fairest assessments I’ve seen from someone outside of Alabama. We have our quirks, but most of us don’t bite.
❤️
As an outsider who calls Alabama home., I would agree to most of the assessments. But I think Nick should spend more time in the newer burbs of Birmingham which would give Huntsville and its burbs a run for their money when it comes to true diversity. I have lived in both places.
Jim, I agree. Nick Johnson is one intelligent guy, and he treats all areas of our Country the same....the good and the bad. His assessments are fair. The manner in which he does so is humorous as heck. I wish I could say the same for some other "experts." BTW, I also live in Alabama. Other than some of our State level politicians, we have good folks here. At least our Politicians aren't as notorious as SOME of those from the West Coast. I have traveled extensively, and I am truly concerned about the future of California. Between the politics, and the San Andreas Fault, I see little hope of that State recovering. I hope I am wrong.
We only nibble. Hardly ever bite. LoL!
Didn’t you know Dothan,AL, is a big Jewish community? Jews are paid $50,000 to move there. Look it up. < 100 miles from Tallahassee FL. How could you have missed that?

Just learned something new. Mardi Gras in the US originated in Mobile, Alabama. Thanks Nick!
It was also the first capital of French Lousiana as well. Mobile was settled first. 1700-1725 it was the capital and then the Spanish from Spanish Florida moved into the area. There wasn't a permanent French settlement until they settled Mobile.

I am in the navy and I am from Alabama and I will definitely agree with moving to AL! Very relaxing and have the wrong image.
@@codysmith1915 I wouldn’t use this guys advice on anything. He makes some good points but he is way off on others. Just watch your states “unboxing video” and you’ll see.
For instance some of the cities he showed like Dothan, he showed the poorest section of the city. It’s the south side (inside circle) and oldest part of the city. Very poor people live on that side of town. The west side of Dothan there are brand new homes (outside circle) for 175k. The north side is nice but a little older. The east side has tons of new homes and giant houses.
UFC also started in Dothan Alabama.
I’ve watched a lot of these videos and after watching my home states I’m now taking his points with a grain of salt. Kind of upsetting because I’m in a similar situation to you looking for places to move to.
I once drove outside of NAS Pensacola and got lost in AL, I was astounded by the white sand beaches... very beautiful and nice homes. I would love to live there
Well... I never thought much of Alabama, but have gone there a few times for work or to visit friends who moved there. I wouldn't want to neglect the food! I have never had a bad meal in Alabama! It seems like there's an Alabama style of cooking, and everyone knows what it is, and they do a good job! Sometimes really humble looking places. You get fed, and they're nice about it. My general impression of Alabama is "uninhabited", you can drive all day and not see anyone. Overall it's a lot better than I thought! Some places (Dothan) seem kind of desolate, you wonder what even keeps the city going.... I think a LOT of America is like that, at least in the South.
Grew up here, lived in many other places for years, it's always been the friendliest state and always home. Some of the churches are a little much; just follow God, not the man telling you how to follow God.
Alabama actually seems decently underrated.

Come on. You can stay at my place when you get here.
Ok, ok. As an Alabaman, I’m taking a lot of what you said in stride. First off, I’m from Gadsden and lived there until I was 19. I have also lived in Tuscaloosa, New Orleans (proper) , Charlotte, NC, Atlanta (proper), Fall Church, VA (10 miles from the White House), and Sacramento (proper). I moved back to Gadsden (with no intentions of staying) and met my husband, had two kids, and now 13 years later, I’m moving to Michigan (where my husband is from). The very first thing I would like to say is….Alabama is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL state that I have EVER lived in. The problem with Alabama lies in the fact we don’t “do” change well. BUT…I have started seeing changes. Especially in the last 5-10 years. If we can become more progressive, this will be a premiere state. My in-laws absolutely LOVE coming here to visit. We live a mile from Noccalula Falls, which is absolutely gorgeous. My friends actually worked really hard to create extensive biking and hiking trails at/around the Falls. The Noccalula Falls area of Gadsden is an untapped gold mine. It WILL explode. Also, you did the state dirty on food. I’m a total foodie. I love Middle Eastern foods of all kinds, African food…and SOUTHERN FOOD. Omg. Mobile. Bye. I should have started a blog about our family food journey through Mobile. Anyways. I think you were fair, but you left out A LOT of the good, which is the food, the overall hospitality of the people (regardless of whether or not you think it’s fake or guarded is WAAAAAY more preferable to almost getting curb stomped in a Philly or Flint bar….or even going to the market in Falls Church). My husband, the Michigander has LOVED getting to know our culture and totally embraced it. Also, the Alabama Coast may be the prettiest beaches I have personally ever seen. Even in the Caribbean. Those sugar beaches, tho.
I'm a mountain biker in Huntsville. Love riding the Noccalula Falls trail system. The local MTB people did a wonderful job there!
I use to live in AL. Ya did a decent job of representing it in a fun, but not disrespectful way. Much appreciate!!
