What's more Vandalised and destroyed the Valencia Street Circuit or the Leafield Technical Centre (former Arrows, Super Aguri and Caterham F1 Technical centre)
Easily the worse would be the old Caterham F1 factory, as that's actual building and structures whereas the Valencia Street Circuit didn't have many permanent buildings - a little like Monaco!
As a Valencian I did some of my driver's ed in what was part of sector 1 of the circuit. It felt kinda weird but also thrilling to think I was learning how to drive in the same place F1 raced all those years ago.
are there any circuits near valencia that does not cost fortune to attend track day (why is Ricardo Tormo so closed to open events and expensive according to website?)
Another street circuit in Spain, which kind of gets forgotten about, is the Mont Juich Park circuit, near Barcelona. Host of 4 Spanish Grands Prix (1969, 1971, 1973 and 1975), it was one of the fastest and most challenging street circuits in F1 history. Unfortunately, this track met its end in messy circumstances. What would turn out to be the last Grand Prix staged there, in 1975, was a mix of politics, safety concerns with regards to the barriers and tragedy. Long story short, it was the first time a race was stopped and not restarted without 75% of the distance being covered, Jochen Mass took his first and only win in F1 and in 6th place was the first and so far only female driver to score points (well, half a point) in F1, Lella Lombardi
Spain has a real penchant for abandoned tracks; around 50km southwest of the current Barcelona Circuit (as the crow flies) is the Autodromo de Sitges-Terramar, a 2KM concrete oval with the steepest banking of any permanent facility in Motorsports history at a 66° camber angle. It only held one major Grand Prix in 1923 and a few minor bike races before it was shut down
@@SiVlog1989 The concrete oval itself is still intact, though the infield buildings have been torn down and a chicken farm now resides within the grounds.
Valencia never hosted the Spanish Grand Prix, because that was already held at the Circuit De Catalunya near Barcelona, so the races at Valencia used the "European Grand Prix" moniker.
I've been to all but one of the races there. I have a close friend that lived on the top floor of the middle of the three apartment buildings between turn 1 and 2 Only had to pay for the trip to get there from the Netherlands. Watching the race with a nice cold cerveza and some quality food because my friend is a Chef and Dutch commentary from satellite tv. Imo opinion this was one of the best street circuits with a lot of overtaking possibilities, and I was gutted it was cancelled.
Spain's politicians are the worst in Europe when it comes to corruption related matters. The current party on power (PSOE) just had 2 former presidents sentenced for stealing 600M of a messy operation with companies going bankrupt. And the opposition party (PP), although their corruption cases are not as big as this one, what they lack in (this is the wrong and at the same time the correct word for it) quality, they have in quantity. Their list of corruption cases, trials, weird deaths and stuff is endless. The Valencia fuck up came from the political party that right now is in the opposition (PP), while the Jerez fuck up that made us lose that race came from people within the political party that right now rules the country (PSOE)
Here in Brazil we have the same love for bandit parties and its politicians, we can see this at present moment... A few years ago, It was considered the building of a New circuit in Rio to put Interlagos apart for political disputes between the President and the local Governor. The First said It would be a 100% private investment, but like Valencia, it had no long expectations of comercial profits and the project was abandoned on its virtual vision yet...
Valencia is an amazing and more recent example of an abandoned track, but personally I think its beaten in awesomeness by the reims-gueux circuit in france. All of the pit lane buildings, grandstands and media tower still lies along the side of what is now a public road. I visited a few months ago and you can spend hours exploring, I'd thoroughly reccomend it. Great video anyway though!
I live across the road from the forner Australian GP track in Adelaide. I ride my pushbike up it most days. Prost, Berger, Senna, Mansell, Piquet, Rosberg etc etc. A great era.
The 3.8km GP layout can't be used again as there have been too many changes to the streets around turns 7-10. The 3.2km National layout hasn't been used for a few years now, but has been resurfaced in the last few months ready for the return of the Adelaide 500 in December. The Sprint layout (turn hard right after Senna Chicane and rejoin at Turn 12 of the GP layout) is scheduled to be used again for the return of the Adelaide Festival of Speed in March next year. The cycling layout (pit straight and Senna Chicane plus purpose built loop) is used every week, and it was on this layout that Valtteri Bottas was the last F1 driver to compete at Victoria Park in any sporting event, riding in a summer criterium race organised by his pro cyclist girlfriend's cycling club.
The last race there was actually the European Grand Prix (not the Spanish GP) in 2012 and it had maybe the greatest podium in history: Fernando in 1st, Kimi 2nd and Michael 3rd (his last podium).
I went there in 2016 when most of that part of the circuit was still enclosed and not accessible to the public but the rest of it could clearly be seen on public roads including grid hatching still marked out on what was the start/finish straight. I love abandoned circuits but I wish they were maintained and still in use.
When you talked about the historian aspect - coming to a track as a fan and walk on it, i had the same feeling while i was at the nürburgring for my very first time. Back in the pits you can still see the rubber marks on the ground, the old UPS sponsor paint ist still on the ground aswell. Even if It's totally unlikely due to financial concerns, a renewed track there should have potential in modern day f1. The surroundings with the bay area are way better than in Catalunya. Even thoe a lot of drivers did not enjoy the track at all, we had a couple of great race bangers there, 2010 with Webbers flip and in 2012 Alonsos great charge through the field and Schumis last Podium.
I'm enough of an F1 fan to have travelled to the Monza when I visited Milan to go and have a look at the race track complex without a race being held. The whole park is extremely beautiful, but the whole track is fenced off effectively so i couldn't walk on the track. I managed to get onto the iconic oval track because there is a hole in the fence.
I live near the autodromo and I'm glad some international tourists come to visit even when no one races. Unfortunately you can't walk on the race track (as is the case everywhere, I think) but as you've seen most of the oval track is accessible including the two banked curves. The park is wonderful and you can see many squirrels walking around. If you're lucky you can even spot car manufacturers testing their vehicles there while the track isn't used for racing.
If ever in Texas, COTA is open to the public for "bike night" were anyone can ride your bicycle on the track, local HPDE clubs host track days, and club races are held several times a year.
I think it's kind of funny that Hamilton didn't forget about Valencia. When Grill the Grid tested every drivers' Turn 1 knowledge, Hamilton was the only one to get Silverstone wrong, saying "that could be Valencia" before correcting himself and saying Silverstone. Which is funny to me because he DNF'd in that course because of Pastor Maldonado.

I lived in the building right beside Turn 17 from 2006-2009. Top two floors, I believe it was the 4th or 5th balcony from the end. From the front (and biggest) balcony, we were able to see 17 perfectly, and the smaller back balcony we were able to see 20 and a large grandstand. It was a fun time of the year every time we had race weekend. During qualifiers or during cup car races it got so loud that even closing the doors and windows wouldn't help one bit - it was awesome. We would always have friends (both local and international) over for race weekends, and it was some of the best times we had living there. When either the 2008 or 2009 weekend came to an end, they opened the track to the public to allow people on it to run and bike for a day, and it was a great way to get up close and personal to an active race track. After one of those weekends my father and I also ran down in the middle of the night and cut off part of the fence covering, which was a thick perforated vinyl that was used to stop onlookers from peering in and not paying for the race. Its still folded up neatly in my attic, and has been there ever since we moved back from Spain in 2009. Great memories from this area, and I'm happy to have been randomly recommended a video about the old track!

Il never forget the last time that F1 came here which was 2012 and Pastor Maldonado crashed into Lewis Hamilton on the last lap. When Lewis had been winning. I quite like this street circuit!
Hold up, it was given the title of the European GP. As the Nurburgring would rotate now and then. It was never the Spanish GP. Barcelona, Catalunya has had that race on lock down for ages.
i think they should have made it into a place where people could take there cars, And have track days, have other Race series, Instead of abandoned it to time and wasting away,
This track is the Spanish economy in a nutshell. A total waste of money that shouldn't have even been on the calendar. The decay is perfect. €300mil well spent.
You know, I’ve never thought of abandoned F1 tracks. I suppose I’ve just assumed they’d be used for other races. Is in Donington park (sorry for my spelling) was going to be the British F1 till F1 pulled out. That’s still used for motorcycle racing isn’t it?
Donington (you spelt it right 😉) is still used for bike and car racing. The failed redevelopment never really got far enough along to massively affect the venue
Damn I never knew it was that easy to get onto what is left. I go to Spain a lot to see family. Nearest airport to them is Valencia so I see the remnants everytime the plane comes in to land
Funny it is much more a street circuit now than it was back then. Back then it was the first of many awful "forget where you are" concrete-labyrinths like Saudi Arabia, Russia, India, US/Miami etc. The only one which looks similar but seems outstanding is Singapore because of the "first ever" night-race atmosphere and because people acutally remember the track. I wouldn't mind seeing the current Valencia Track reused as lower spec FIA-grade GT-Racing Circuit once or twice a year.

Il never forget the last time that F1 came here which was 2012 and Pastor Maldonado crashed into Lewis Hamilton on the last lap. When Lewis had been winning. I quite like this street circuit!
Such a cool video, Matt!! KEEP IT COMING!!
Hold up, it was given the title of the European GP. As the Nurburgring would rotate now and then. It was never the Spanish GP. Barcelona, Catalunya has had that race on lock down for ages.
“The government was lucky that they weren’t fined by F1”…….. Yeah I’m sure they were clenching with worry 🤔
and once again, using space that could be used for what it was built.. but no, just let us do some luxury buildings for the rich guys.. no big deal..
Another reason everyone needs less government.
I bet the citizens are still being taxed
Ghetto Valencia Circuit has more character than the original circuit.
Keep in mind thet F1 preferred the Miami GP than this classic. F1 is evolving but backwards
i think they should have made it into a place where people could take there cars, And have track days, have other Race series, Instead of abandoned it to time and wasting away,
Oh yeah so much history! A rubbish track designed during one of the worst periods of F1 - yesterday.
They do not race anymore ther because the track was really ugly
This track is the Spanish economy in a nutshell. A total waste of money that shouldn't have even been on the calendar. The decay is perfect. €300mil well spent.
Like the council of super criminals in the UK Mr Everette? Late 70s early 80s!!😂
I bet that rotating drawbridge ate a quarter of the money. Coulda just kept the track on land maybe?
Down in Sevilla the Expo 92 infrastructure is also pretty much abandoned.
It is accessible for everyone?? How cool is that. And sad. 😅
As demonstrated by yours truly, yes haha!
At least the crooks were caught. Here in north america those people would just still be politicians.
You know, I’ve never thought of abandoned F1 tracks. I suppose I’ve just assumed they’d be used for other races. Is in Donington park (sorry for my spelling) was going to be the British F1 till F1 pulled out. That’s still used for motorcycle racing isn’t it?
BSB and WSBK, yes
You maybe talking brands hatch
Donington (you spelt it right 😉) is still used for bike and car racing. The failed redevelopment never really got far enough along to massively affect the venue
@@winstongordon9694 could be I remember there being a big thing about silverstone losing the British GP
Even though the races weren't great, I really didn't mind the track itself. Shame to see the state it's in
0:29 "But here in sector 3, as you can kinda see behind me..."
Was that rhyme intentional?
Damn I never knew it was that easy to get onto what is left. I go to Spain a lot to see family. Nearest airport to them is Valencia so I see the remnants everytime the plane comes in to land
Formula drift should visit this track. Drifting motorsport should be easy to use.
Dodgy Spanish government, thought ours was a shit show, I mean it still is but daaaaamn Spain
Of course that doesn’t happen now?? Why else would you be a local councillor??😂
This is also how the Miami street circuit will end up once F1 or US media finds the next hot thing.
Thanks for this!! Great job!! The hair on my neck always stands up when I think about the history of these abandoned tracks!!
I went there in 2018 and couldn't believe I could just walk in. Loved it.
Same song in the back like this one squirrel guy
I discovered that the Canadian GP circuit in Montreal is used as a recreational path.
why not make the track into a commons. Why has no one made the abandoned racetrack a squat.
When Indy and Monzas curbs are so dangerous, even an abandoned track removes them.
My God! And I thought the tories were the crown Princes of Corruption!
If i was near these type abandoned tracks may have to takes some laps on my bike hehe
Vpn is also good to watch adult content on wifi that have parental control 😂
i not usually comment on your videos, but i want to said thanks u for make noice of this scandal of F1. I am from spain, and as u said we still paying for this thing's, f1 is one of the most expesive sports, and in hand's of stupid people like Camps (ex major of valencia) it can be the ruin for a lot of people
