I certainly feel that Etsy's enthusiasm for showing customers 'here's a whole bunch of other similar products' when they click on a particular item, is very distracting. There are just so many things to negotiate and, like you say, Etsy is a massively saturated platform.
I can sort of understand why they might do it, they just want a sale and don't care which seller gets it. But it's also well known that customers buy less in the face of too many options, so I'd love to know if sharing so many similar items actually loses them as many sales as it generates? 🤔
@Kim Bliss I would say so. When I buy supplies on etsy, especially something new I want to work with, I often become overwhelmed by the similar options. But when I find a good product and shop, I stick with it because I don't want to go down the dreaded search results.
See, this is exactly how I've felt as a buyer on the platform at times too. It doesn't take long before I just think, "oh I'll come back later" and bounce off the platform.
You are definitely not alone. I've been editing some new ones today and I hate them *so* much. Returning to my photos and videos is definitely on my list of things to do this summer. I hope the Shopify site building is going well, good luck! 😁👍
Great points Kim! I've been on Etsy for 7 years, and I have been changing products and finally found my niche. Two years ago, I decided to get more serious with my shop. I added a lot more products, fixed my photos, and updated titles and tags, and sales increased. Summers are always slow so I start on Fall and Christmas items. I make sure I'm heavily stocked for holidays to get me through January where sales slow down again. Sadly, I don't do personalization, but I've been thinking about products where I can do that.
Personalisation is such a tricky one. It took me a good year to figure out a way to work it into a viable product. Well worth it though in my experience. And I'm with you on using this time to prep for autumn and the holidays! It feels surreal when it's so hot and sunny outside. 😁
I noticed that the photography makes a big difference. My products sell better with better photos and layout. Gonna have to go back and rephotograph a few
This is one of the things I really need to focus on this summer too. My current photos are OK, but they need to be more than that now. Good luck to both of us! 😊💚
Very logical thinking. I like that. Your points are also generalized and not specific to a type of product (not niche, I'm talking hand made vs POD vs digital). I watched a video from another Etsy "expert" and they were saying you need at least 100 listings in your shop and you should have at least 20 on hand, preferably 50 or more. That just can't apply to a hand made shop because of the time it would realistically take to produce so many items by one person. But they didn't make that distinction. By omission, they're advice was directed to all. The one aspect you brought up about maintaining appeal to a customer even after they've arrived on your product page is so, so important. Etsy's job is to make products sell. They don't care whose. So it's understandable why they do what they do. However, it makes it so much harder to make a sale when Etsy puts your competition on your product page. It's hard enough to get ranked in a search, but then you have to compete on your own product page. I get why Etsy does it, from their perspective, but it's really not fair to the individual sellers. One example I found of how to get around it is to have a bunch of related items of your own and those will dominate the "related" item row on your product page. Thanks for your honest words of advice.
I'm getting sick of hearing people saying that you need X amount of listings to make sales. Sure there's truth in that the more items you have, the better chance of getting found. But if you have a good product, you don't need to swamp the platform with generic items to try and get someone to click. I made consistent monthly sales with just 5 products in my shop so this 'advice' can frankly get in the bin. I've just replied to another comment you made where you mentioned how many sales you'd made in your first 3 months so you'll already know this. A good product will beat generic tat all day long. Even if that comes in the form of a squirrel feeder and not the item you prefer. 😉😄
Thanks so much for this video Kim! I've honestly been in a bit of panic mode / depressed. I put my heart into my Etsy Shop and work.. and ever since the day before Mother's Day its been scary slow. Like, REALLY BAD! I would usually get 15-20+ sales a day selling digital download art and now I'm around 1-5. There was a day I only make like $5... I've had the lowest payout in years this week. Its like a switch got flipped, and my sales halted. I haven't changed anything in my shop.. just been adding more listings... just trying to keep my mind off how bad things are (for me at least) Keep telling myself.. people are saving for the summer, vacations and what not. Kids are out of school... doing things outside of the online shopping land. Hopefully everything bounces back in a few months. Because before then I was cruising! I was also told, if you were getting sales before the slow down.. don't touch anything So that's what I'm doing. Just updating my shop message, adding new listings, photos, videos, social media, tidying up so to speak.
It's the perfect time of year to do the tidy up tasks if summer is your slow time. I'm doing the exact same thing too. And I totally get what you mean about trying to keep your mind off things. Saaaame. Because it's not just Etsy, everything has slowed down. Online retail, high street retail, holiday bookings, everything. We're all just holding on I think, but nothing last forever as they say, and neither will this. 💚💚
I always enjoy your videos! The commentary and advice have a more real and honest presentation than so much of what shows up in my queue. I've been working on trying to set up my Etsy shop for a couple of years now. Clearly very slow progress, but I remind myself that it's still progress. I'm getting near the finish line with the framework completed and listings now in draft. Your videos are an inspiration that keeps me going. Also love the shots of your fabulous place. I think I might have even seen goats at one point. Mahalo from Hawaii. Keep up the great work, girl!
Hey Sharon, hello from Wales! 😁 You're absolutely right. Progress is progress and you're not in a race with anyone. Good luck with getting your shop launched and cheers for watching! 💚
Aw you flatter me. ☺️ I don't always take my own though. There are a couple of things in this video that I need to do myself.. like add videos to my listings for a start! 😆
Thankyou for this video, you explained things really well and straight to the point. That was helpful. I have wanted to start an Etsy shop for a long time but I am useless with technology and couldn't work out out to do it. Finally my son helped me and now I have an Etsy shop. I am a self employed joiner/carpenter and I have been making furniture from reclaimed timber for a few years now. To start with in my Etsy shop I am selling smaller items such as wall art, small side tables, candle holders etc. I have only been up and running for 2 and a half weeks so I only have 7 items at the moment but each item is unique and different to anything else. My problem is nobody is even viewing it. I have had 4 views in 2 and a half weeks. I am right at the bottom of the pile. I searched the items I sell on a friends computer earlier on this week, each item has 13 tags but when I typed in 'Wall art from reclaimed timber' I was no where to be seen. That is my problem, I am right at the bottom of the pile so nobody can see me. How do I sort this out?? I would be grateful for any tips.
So a couple of things, the first please don't get too down on yourself about the views. You've just got started on Etsy and joined during the summer which is a notoriously quiet time for many on the platform, myself included. So you're actually doing better than you think. Second, when you're thinking of keywords and seo, try to step out of maker mode and step into customer mode. Someone who would be interested in what you're selling, but have no clue what it might even be called let alone the processes behind it. For example, I sell embroidery designs on water soluble fabric stabiliser. None of my customers find me for those keywords though. They find me for search terms like "embroidery stickers" and "stick and stitch patches". 😁 Remember to optimise your descriptions and titles with these keywords too, not just tags. Focus on getting those first sales and feedback as it will act as social proof to new buyers. If a friend or family member wants to buy something from you, send them to your Etsy shop as most sellers get the ball rolling this way. And lastly, Etsy is a slow burner. So many people try to make out that it's an easy platform to sell on, unfortunately for physical handmade goods it's currently a bit of a slog. But definitely worth having in your toolbelt so don't give up. Don't be disheartened by slow progress (that's perfectly normal!) and just keep chipping away at it. Good luck! 👍
@@KimBliss Thank you so much for taking the time to read my comment and reply too. I am going to stick with it and do my best to get it going. Work has gone slow too so this Etsy shop gives me something to do when I have no work on. Your advice was really helpful I am definitely going to add more keywords to my descriptions and titles, I never thought of that. Thanks again Kim, much appreciated.
IMO, Etsy hides some sellers PAID listings, while charging sellers listing fees to show them to buyers. Buyers may end up paying more for items because they never find some things that are actually cheaper. You're not supposed to know. Lots of sellers are discussing this on social media venues, and can easily prove it. Some sellers cant even find their own items (that they paid listing fees for) in their own Etsy Storefront, so there's no way buyers will ever find those items in Etsy's search either. The only thing that would make Etsy change its ways is probably a multi-billion dollar class action lawsuit for charging sellers money to show their listings, but knowingly hiding those listings instead.
You say there's proof of Etsy actively hiding listings, as opposed to it being a glitch of some kind or user error, I'd be interested to hear more about that?
Generally speaking, men tend to know exactly what they want before they buy it. Men will spend time looking things over online, in magazines and through friends etc. When it comes to the sale part men will go directly to the place that sells the item they've chosen and buy it. I think the video and demonstration on etsy etc is just as valuable to men as it's part of thier research phase.
I switched my business to Shopify and it's crickets. I sell stickers and stationery so I find it hard to add value to what I sell. Personalizing doesn't work so well when you have to order in batches. I make the stickers on my Cricut machine but everything else I draw the art for then order it. I was handmaking notepads but it became very time consuming. I'm trying not to let imposter syndrome and depression set in. Thank you for all the information and it's good not to feel alone.
How long have you been selling on Shopify? It takes a while for a website to generate organic traffic and even then you have to do a fair amount of seo work so in the meantime you have to send your own traffic. If you don't have a community that can be tough. Don't give up though. If things are slow right now it doesn't mean it'll stay that way. 💚
