Hi Chris, Just had 3 Hermanns eggs hatch. I live in the south of England Temperature is around 22C at present Should I keep the 3 newly hatched Hermanns outdoors throughout the summer straight away from day 1 and what is the best substrate for them? They are in an open tortoise table with access to water and shade and vegetation fed on flowers weeds and access to cuttlefish. Then should I keep them in the unit shown in the video in the Autumn prior to a short 6 to 8 week hibernation and once they wake up prior to putting them in the garden? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Using this setup, what are my safe options to keep the night temps up?
As a former keeper I can say this is the best 15 minutes of advice that I have ever seen for anyone wanting to raise a tortoise. Exceptional job! Your vast experience is so valuable and appreciated.
Thank you Mike!
This is amazing info…. Especially about the calcium… a lot of people over do the calcium by not only how often but by how much thank you for all this info
Should I be concerned about what bin I choose to keep my baby in, is propylene plastic a safe plastic to choose to keep my baby tortoise in or will it leach out and hurt my tortoise? If so then what bins do you guys recommend?
Watching baby tortoises just never gets old…especially when you are teaching us how to properly take care of them. They are such beautiful little miniatures of their parents…who will one day be all big and impressive.🖤🇨🇦
Yes! Thank you Tamarra!
I was gifted a four year old red foot tortoise last may. Her previous owner couldn't take care of her anymore, and since I have a very large backyard she can explore, he gave her to me. She has slight pyramiding, but I've been doing research to keep it from getting worse. Even if she just turned 5 years old last week, I'm still going to follow these tips as a new tortoise mommy.
That’s great and good luck with her!
Nice of you Chris wearing that tshirt in support of Brian 🙏🏻
I noticed that as well. A subtle way to show support without saying anything
Brian and I go pretty far back so I’m definitely crushed about his news but he’s got this 💪🏻
Exactly❣️ I came to say the same thing... You rock, Chris.
“So they can start growing smoothly”. I see what you did there. 😉
🐢❤️🐢
Love your videos!!
Thanks Lori!!
Excellent instructional introduction to the art of caring for turtles and tortoises with knowledge and love.
Great instructions. I'm not a turtle owner, but I just love learning about animals with a spotlight on reptiles. I love what you do. But I especially love your conservation work you do. Thanks for all your hard work on saving the turtle family.
Thank you so so much!
Love the support shirt !!! Education and compassion can go far :) Thank you for showing him you care. I adore your children helping in the background and love your content!
Brian and I go way back, he’s a brother and he’s got this! 💪🏻
Great nuanced video. Specially about lighting, love how you separate different types of tortoises. Simplicity is key when raising hatchlings.
Thanks Sven!
You're such a great turtle dad/grandad. 🐢 Those little cuties are in the best care.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for the great, informative content! I definitely prefer the long videos, they are kind of therapeutical because of the way you explain all important things but also help A LOT with raising tortoises and getting to know them better without having to read 100 articles or books 😂💚
Thank you!! We really got work together as a community to push short videos out!
Great video!! Oh my goodness, makes me miss my tortoises!! I had to find them a new home after my divorce- I didn't have the room for their indoor habitat and lost the yard for their summer playground. I had a Russian tortoise and a painted wood turtle, both had been surrendered to the pet store I worked in. Luckily I found a great person to take them in.
Thank you! I’m glad you were able to find a good person to take them!
Love the enthusiasm this guy radiates. Really makes you appreciate these turtles so much more
Another great, informative video! Would love to see a dedicated video on how to care for mature/senior adult turtle & tortoises. Common sign of illness to look out for. How to trim their nails, beak at home. Indoor burmation, etc.
Great idea and thanks for watching sam!
Thank you so much for putting this video out Chris I just hatched my first Redfoot tortoises and infant care is so critical!!
Amazing.! Again a lot of new things to learn. Great stuff.
Thank you!
Raise them RESPONSIBLY!
Agreed! thanks for watching!
That's why although I love them, I don't adopt. I'm in mid50s and my tortoise, turtle would way outlive my time of care. I'll enjoy GST's collections.
@@marysaltlife1427, I too appreciate from afar.
I think so about this offering
I seriously love you for this video!!! Thank you!!! Our wee pal 🐢 will have all what he/she needs!
Chris and his wife are the best out there, love the passion, and the education they provide.
You inspired me to get a baby hermanns tortoise! Just recently bought a house with a big backyard and I was looking for something that can live outdoors in Arizona, found the perfect pet to grow with my daughter thanks to you. I also found a breeder nearby!
Another amazing, informative, concise video. Your videos on tortoise care are as always, simply the best!

When I was young, my sisters & I adopted box turtles we found.
Watching this brought back some great memories.
I saw what we did right and wrong. So glad you detailed this.

I found baby red footed tortoise in my backyard a few days ago. I thought about leaving it out there but I decided to bring it inside. I don't know how to take proper care of a tortoise so this video is extremely helpful.
luv tortoises and turtles. Exspecialy baby one's. there so darn cute. I had a tortoise when I was little. But it was stolen. I cryed for days. I think who ever sees this for real there very lucky indeed. and I'm jealous. there's no greater gift then to give life as a woman does. What a beautiful thing to have. from UK 🇬🇧👍 an old cockney gal
So sorry to hear that!!
@@GardenStateTortoise thanks I appreciate that. but It did happen nearly 80 years ago. I think I was similar to the big ones you showed but not that big. The same size as the one you showed with the little tortoise. I called it zapper. It looked as thou he zapped he's food. it was quite funny to watch him. from 🇬🇧👍 an old cockney gal
So cute and informative.
Thank you!
It’s so weird. I’m subscribed, but didn’t get a notification that this video was up. I had to come looking for it.
Ugh so frustrating but thank you Lauren, thank you for looking for it!

Always love the educational learning in your videos. I just love the tortoises, but learning their habits & habitats are fascinating. Like being 100% sustainable right after birth. Just have to watch out for ‘gators’! Ouch! Thanks for all you guys do, and the kiddos❤️
PS…? How do they breathe under the substrate?
They're so adorable 🐢
