  • Europe, North America, China are baking in record-breaking heatwaves.
In New Delhi it's already hit 49 degrees this year, 12 above the average.
    The heat has brough wildfires.
In the UK people are bracing for temperatures to hit forty degrees celcius for the first time.
And a scorching heatwave is fueling more than 30 blazes in Spain and Portugal.
France is on its highest state of alert for extreme temperatures.
In Morocco firefighters have been sent to remote mountain forests in the north.
Is this all down to climate change?
And is it too late to do anything about it?
    Presenter: Bernard Smith
    Guests:
Stephen Cornelius, deputy practice leader for climate change and energy at World Wildlife Fund International.
Nigel Arnell, climate scientist and professor in the department of meteorology at University of Reading.
Stefan Doerr, professor for wildlife science at Swansea University.

There is one simple question that needs to be answered if this planet we call home is to remain habitable. That is, can we change our way of living that reduces power, fuel, and water consumption to levels not seen for the last 50 years. I live in a small village in Lao, after a life time in a number of western counties. I don't own a car, and rarely use the buses to go any where. Life is simple, and stress free, which to me makes a whole lot more sense than buying stuff that has been shipped half way round the planet. Our problem is that we are told that we need more growth in the economy, which as we all know is measured in GDP. The problem is that weather disasters increase GDP, so economists tell us all is OK. Put simple there is no future for us if we don't start to question the economic model we are presently working with.

At least they talked about the jet stream, even though they did not give a full explanation of it. On the BBC and DW news their meteorologists did not even bring the subject up. Previously the world was circled by a number of streams of air, (or winds), which followed a pretty regular path. Now due to the accumulated effects of climate change these stream no longer follow a circular path, but instead meander up and down. What this does is bring hot air from the equator towards the poles and cold air from the poles down towards the equator. These do not balance each other out. What they tend to do is push past each other creating large pockets of either hotter than normal or colder than normal temperatures. This is why a 1 or 2 degree rise in the average temperatures can cause a 10 or 15 degree rise in local temperatures or even a decrease in local temperatures. Even if we do manage to stop the increase at 2 degrees this effect will continue for a number of years after.

Excllent discussion? This is discussion based solely on science, forgetting the author of Science, God, the Creator of the Earth:(Genessis 1-1-31). Without checking out the root cause, the symptoms and effects alone, remain misleading. In General 1:26-30, God created man as the center of the creation and its carer. The earth is entrusted to Man by the Creator, we read thus: ".. God blessed them(male and female), by saying to them, be fertile and multiply.. Have dominion over the fish of the sea... etc(entire earth.). This is to say that, although Man is a mere Trustee of the Earh, but he is not the creator of the earth. what Man knows about the earth is almost nill. Man is supposed to be in constant good relationship with his Creator in order to acquire proper knowledge of living in harmony with the world. Today Man has given himself to a false god, Satan, Lucifer and its fallen angels , as we read in 1Jon 5:19-21. "We know that we belong to God but the world is under the influence of the Evil one (Satan) ..." Therefore, to stop the "heatwave", etc, we need to be mindfull of our lost relationship with the Creator :keep the word of God and His commands, worship God through daily prayer life (Rosaries, holy Mass..). ".. Children be on your guard against idols." (Philippians 3:18-20).

The reason the jet stream functions abnormally now: The jet stream drives global weather by propelling strong trade winds from west to east. The necessary strength of the winds for the jet stream to function properly and for Earth to experience weather within a certain band, relies on a high contrast of temperatures between the poles and the equatorial region. For some time now the far north and south is heating twice as fast as the temperate and equatorial zones, (eg it was 26 C in the Arctic in spring a few years ago) so instead of a consistent circular path, driven by reliably strong winds, the jet stream slows down, "wobbles" and yes, "meanders up and down". This means certain weather patterns set in and get "stuck" over a region or whole continents, like heat domes, polar vortexes etc. I am writing this in July 2023 where jet stream fuelled heat domes and "heat storms" over three continents (North America, Europe and Asia) are causing prolonged extreme heatwaves smashing records as hot air masses are being drawn up from North Africa, and at the same time, on the other side of the jet stream, cold air is being pulled south from he Arctic region into the UK where it is much colder than it should be in July. That didn't happen exactly the same way last summer when it hit 40C in many parts of the UK and there were also heatwaves in Europe. This year is much worse and if you understand climate science, it is only the beginning due to the 15 - 20 year lag in the climate system which means we are now experiencing the results of fossil fuels burned 20 years ago. If we don't act decisively, and continue with "business as usual" it means global heating will continue beyond tipping points and many areas of the earth will become uninhabitable.

Yet, up to this day, majority of world’s population rather have a passive life instead of acting and doing something for their own community. They expect the few that are altruistic and brave enough to save their lives while they do nothing but watch, pollute and claim privileges. Most not even bother giving a few hours of their time to do some sort of volunteering or learn a skill that could help them or their neighbours. There isn’t a single village in Europe that had trained and equipped their population with what’s needed to stop wildfires to spread. No one is ready or care to be. They want to be “civilians” for the rest of their lives, and be spectators or climate change experts at coffee tables. Humans are odd (and yes, I’ve been doing my share for decades so I trust to be somehow entitled to say this)
