Great practical tips! I think one of the biggest ways to improve your audio regardless of what gear you use, is to practice your on camera presence and public speaking. Harris has such a natural way of addressing the camera that the gear only helps accentuate the positive qualities of his voice. But even if you have super clean audio, if you sound like a robot, no one will listen long enough to appreciate your mic!
I was hoping to get some in-depth tutorial about setting up a compressor + limiter and maybe some EQ options... but a good compressor/limiter video would be very helpfull to a lot of streamers (so many streamers with low or clipping audio). I always apply the multiband compressor with the brickwall limiter option in Premiere to boost the audio for YT, but having it done in realtime would be nice. I want to look into this myself, but having a starting point would be nice.

Windows 10 also sets your microphone to stereo by default, whereas many microphones actually sound both way better and louder without turning up the gain to the point where they pick up tons of noise, if they are set to mono. This actually even allows you to lower the volume of your mic in the control panel to about 15-25%, rather than 70%+, which drastically reduces the amount of background noise and even keyboard/mouse clicks your mic picks up. Download VoiceMeeter Banana, do some EQ tuning to up the highs and lows until the mic doesn't sound like a tin can anymore, then make sure everything is set to the same bandwidth (41khz or 48khz). After that, add filters such as a compressor and a limiter in OBS. You can do all of this with 100% free software.
i have used to have the blue snowball but i traded it up for a $10 one. the nw700 is bad but when you get a usb converter the mic is provided with all the power to perform properly. it sounds the exact same as the blue snowball and actually better because there isnt a room full of echo

If you dont know how to actually use proper mic placement, as well a top notch mic pre, like on the Avalon 737 or Neve 1073 level, then you won't get what the higher end mics have to offer. USB mics are perfect for a home studio that isn't treated and has to deal with low end noise from everywhere. Great vid guys.

Thanks for great content I really enjoys your videos. I have a question. I'm setting up a home office and want the best sound possible for doing long online meetings and I'm wondering what would be the best solution? I would like if the mic would not be visible on the video so I guess it should be mounted just above/behind my display. I was wondering if I could go with a GoXLR Mini and a Røde Podmic for mic setup? But I'm a bit unsure how much the distance from my mouth to the mic will affect the quality. The distance will be average 30-40 cm. Maybe a video on how to create the best home office setup would have interest for multiple people in these days ;-) But once again thanks a lot for great content.

Awesome video and it's something I really have tried everything with and failed horribly each time I try xD I tried a few of the other tips in some of your older videos etc... i just could not figure out how to make it work
All the mics sounded different including the XLR mics, for most people yes it be harder to tell, however I could and that kiwi's tonal quality was really nice compared to the previous, so your point is pointless as on the right speakers, you can tell like I can, I think people think that people just listen on terrible speakers, or on earbuds, however there is a large group of people who listen on really nice speakers. I also believe to have the best quality possible in your actual setup before going online to twitch: side note having 192Khz sample rate is pointless, im talking having good quality kit all the way through your audio chain from mic to interface. 48khz sample rate with either 16 or 24 bit depth is propably where people want to sit, anything higher leave for professional recording. Getting a Kiwi is pointless for streaming apart from that lovely tonal quality.

is this just a big ad promoting streambeats?
I found the constant stream beats plug very off putting. Very annoying.
Guys I have a (probably silly) question regarding built in headsets/headphones mics and USB mics (or XLR for that matter), wouldn't there be some type of feedback or interference if you have buds or a headset or headphones on yr head with a built in mic and you want to also use in a USB one? I just want to be sure to choose which ear system to use when using a USB mic, if that makes sense... TIA!
My favorite channel you made my streams and everything better
An awesome video as per usual, Harris. 😆👍👍
As ever, I appreciate you for taking the time to give solid impartial advice. ☺👌🎧🎤
Cheers to you, my man! 🍻
Should I upgrade from my blue snowball to a elgato wave 3?
Nope
Honestly, even though the streambeats part is annoying but Senpai does the most honest content!!
Ryan made it into a video!!! Woo woo!!! Also this vid is perfect! Getting a microphone for Christmas and also just got a wireless headset so i want to tweak the mic settings on it to try and make it better til Christmas 😁👍
I use the Blue Snowball, not the best, but it does a good job for the resources that I have.
These tips are great and all but the one problem I have is whistling frogs/crickets. The country I live in has non stop whistling frogs/ crickets at night. I know the obvious solution is "sTrEaM dUrInG tHe DaY" but thats not possible because I'm both a student and an athlete..... Suppression on obs barely works so ig ill just have to live with it :(
Have you considered testing the Audio Technica at2100x? It's a dynamic cardioid usb AND xlr mic so a perfect mic for beginners to upgrade to xlr if they so wish without spending too much cash
The subliminal messaging to use stream beats is worth watching this video!
I have the Neewer nw-700 kit which was $35-40 on amazon with boom arm and phantom power. Could never get it to not sound echoey. Now I have the Bugha mics from Five Below. They sound better.
Great video!
Is there any chance a video in regards to how to place your mic-arm. I've tried to mount my blue yeti like you have mounted yours. Abouv the monitors towards my face, but I can't seem to figure out how to place to get good pickup during stream :P
An easy fix is to switch to a dynamic mic as well.
What about using the mic on your phone? You had a video about using a phone as a camera, so could you also use a phone as your mic AND have it sound good?
If there's anything I learned from this video, its that if you're a streamer or youtuber, you should use Streambeats for your background music.
Ok it was really a helpful video Alpha
Good info, maybe lay off pushing streambeats so hard though... its almost cringey. I love streambeats and i use it every stream but good lord thats a bit much.
ayo I think we should use streambeats
I would like to see a comparison between usb microphones and cheaper xlr mics that are around the same price point.
Is the blue snowball better than the razed siren mini?
Thank you for elevating sound quality of the entire streaming industry. Quick question. Is that how you wear the apple earphones always or just for this video
Great Video, would just like to know how to use or add an EQ to my mic? Which software should I use? (Razer Seiren X)
WOW! thanks for the copyright free music playlists, I will definitley use them for streaming.
Like Mike Russell said: ENCN (Equalize/Normalize/Compress/Normalize)
What mic and setup was used to record the video itself, including its placement?
I think his blue kiwi was behind or in front of him
Any tips trouble shooting for when it stops allowing headphone to work? Record fine but I can no longer hear through it, it’s about 8 months old…
