    People have a tendency to believe that our modern dance is better, a hybrid of all dance before. Therefor better, but that's simply no true. The Nicholas Brothers are recorded proof as they were masters of dance, style, grace and athleticism.

      At 76 I'm right behind ya'. My daddy played for Genn miller for a while. He also played for Benny Goodman and Guy Lambardo and every Dixieland jazz band on Bourbon St. and halfway up Charles. Clarinet was his weapon of choice. Sounded a lot like Pete Fountain. Those truly were the days.

      The depressing thought is that they were a "finishing act" because of racism. If you look at this one and, say, Chattanooga Choochoo, you'll notice there's a clean break in the music right before the brothers come on and it sounds almost like the music could've ended there. That was to allow southern state censors to cut out their scenes so audiences wouldn't have to see Black performers. For the same reason, the brothers were usually hired as guest stars, so their names wouldn't have to appear on the bill in southern states, and all of Glenn Miller's band on film were white.

    • @pudnbug
      @pudnbug Месяц назад

      I don't think it's true that every riff was composed. True, most of the time they were reading music, but there was still some 'jazz', when soloists could improvise (or at least play things they'd improvised at other times) I heard that the Glen Miller musicians grew so tired of playing 'In the mood' that they thoroughly hated it.

Thus, when performers like the Nicholas Brothers were featured rather than just as comic relief or stereotypical characters, Southern audiences never saw their dance routines.
