⚡️Question - Which insight would help you most with your animations right now? Shape change or Lead and Follow? 👇 Share in the comments below - I'd love to chat with you.
Goodness. I feel like all this time I've lived in the darkness, and now the scales have fallen off my eyes. Thank you, Rusty, these tips are SO helpful! All three of them.
I've been making an animation, really simple, and I applied it to the scene I was doing now. SERIOUSLY, it made the animation really better. Thanks for this content! +1 sub
lead and follow actually includes more than just follow through. Its an overall term to describe what body part or action moves first. Overlap for instance is a part of it. At least thats how I consider it.
@@RustyAnimator Thanks for the acclaration, Sorry I just see your reply, but coming back at this video again for inspiration!! very useful tips!! sometimes I think I have everything in mind, but sometimes i forget some.
Damn, this is great. I wish your drawing lines were a bit thinner but other than that, this is so good. Thank you for breaking it down like you did. The power of the hip!
Thanks Preethi! Implementing more lead and follow will definitely level up your shots. I'm curious though, do you need more it to make the overlap and follow through less clunky? Or is it more for animating movements in different ways (trying different leads to see how it feels) ?
Yes I would love to implement it and also kind of unsure about how fast or slow the movement overlap needs to be? How is spacing needs to be implemented to get organic overlap?
Good question. It depends on what your overlapping, the character, and the feeling your after. Theres no one generic answer. If your overlapping a spine for instance, you could offset each spine control 1 frame later than each other, from the hips up. You could also offset it by 4 frames. Or 8 frames. Or skip offsetting all together and build the overlap into the pose. Without being able to show you visually, I recommend you experiment with different approaches in short tests. Then you'll have a better handle on your options.
Thank you so much sir for this fantastic video im a beginner in using maya and blender to animate and sculpt chracters ect and this really hits the point :)
Awesome video! Always love your content. I think I need to work on my shape change. Would it be fair to say that it's related to good posing? I feel like my poses in general always need to be pushed more and in general feel weak.
Thank you! This is great to hear and a fantastic question! Shape change is absolutely linked to good posing. From the key poses forward you should be building in shape change (spine curves / bends & straights / s&s). They will help push the pose, reinforce the attitude, and sell believable mechanics. A great mantra for you would be : "GO 2X AS FAR" as you think you should.
Hiç Rusty, Thank you for uploading this helpful video. I would like to ask you that what software do you use for commenting on the video frame by frame?
Really helpful tips! But I have a question .. When I determine the leader & the follower in the movement , isn’t it something that I can see in my video reference ? I mean is determining the leader & the follower depending on my reference or it should be determined according to something else ? Also when I animate hips and rotate them and so on , their movement is determined according to my reference , right? Thanks in advance and sorry for my English :)
Keep in mind that reference is just a guide. And in real life lead and follow can be extremely subtle so it may be hard to spot. The main lesson here is - Nothing Moves at the Same Time. Something is always leading. So something must always be dragging. If you dont know what those body parts should be - experiment and see what feels better.

Lead and follow

Thank you, Rusty, these tips are SO helpful! All three of them.
You are super welcome Al Ts. Animation is all about seeing - so I'm happy to help take the blindfold off!
And Thank you for the support!

love hearing this! you are very welcome!
Thank you! I learned a lot, I'll surely practice those points, especially Leading.
Thrilled to here all this Gabrianne! Definitely share those practice animations with me.
Finally somone else besides my teacher that uses lead and follow term instead of Follow through hahah.. I feel nostalgic! :D

I definitely need to work on shape changes more.
I think Lead and follow would help me out drastically, but i should definitely practice shape changing as well.
lead and follow is HUGE. most students lack it and it keeps their animations from feeling organic.
Great video rusty! I think i will go with Lead and follow
Cheers Prathamesh! Looking forward to hearing updates on how lead and follow has helped you.
Damn, this is great. I wish your drawing lines were a bit thinner but other than that, this is so good. Thank you for breaking it down like you did. The power of the hip!
Thanks Rusty. it's help a lot.

It is a fantastic video Rusty. I feel I need all 3 factors are needed in my animation especially would love to implement more of lead and follow.
