- This is part 2 of History Hunters' visit to the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas. Jeff will visit the grave of Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, as well as Ralph Yarborough, the congressman who rode three cars behind JFK's on that fateful day in Dallas. Other grave stops will include Texas Governors Peter Bell, Hardin Runnells, Allan Shivers & Dan Moody, Southwest Airlines co-founder Herb Kelleher, Texas Ranger "Big Foot" Wallace, and Confederate General Stovepipe Johnson.

A trip down memory lane. I too remember exactly where I was when we were told about JFK's death, 9 11, the landing on the moon etc. This IS our history good, bad or ugly. Thank you Jeff!
Jeff and Sarah.... this two part vlog is just full of facts, history, and adventure of many eras of our country's existence. Thank you for all of the informative vlogs that you have to your viewers over the past year.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Norma!
Jeff and Sarah, thank you for showing the Gene Cernan grave. I remember it was just yesterday I would watch Mr. Cernan on TV commenting on the NASA launches. Also, thank you for the history of other Texans buried there. I looked up Thomas Stafford and he is still alive he is 92 years old and he was an astronaut that worked with Gene Cernan on the Apollo mission.
I look to Jesus for my remembrance; when the people's names are forgotten Jesus' doesn't forget. He remembers us and takes us home at the last day.
Great videos Jeff. Cemeteries are full of history.
I had the fortune to meet Gene Cernan three times. He was an great storyteller and a joy to be around. There is a superb documentary about him called Last Man on the Moon. In it, he visits his future gravesite and explains why he wants to be buried there. So it’s nice to see he got his wish. (Note: The graveyard segment might be a bonus scene on the Blu-ray, upon further thought, but it’s worth tracking down.)
Another gr8 job of history. I was stationed in San Antonio TX. I'm glad I did it when I was young.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
At about 45 seconds into this wonderful video you show an original gravestone displayed in a glass case at the Texas State Cemetery Museum. The gravestone is from a “brave soldier of Texas who died on December 24, 1847.” This soldier was my great-great grandfather, Col William G Cooke and this is the first time I have seen a picture of his original gravestone! Col Cooke was in office as the first Adjutant General for the state of Texas when he died at his father-in-law’s ranch near Geronimo in 1847. Cooke's father-in-law was Luciano Navarro, younger brother of the Tejano patriot, Jose Antonio Navarro. I feel the gravestone was made under the directions of Luciano Navarro where there is the inscription in English with the same inscription below it in Spanish. Navarro had Cooke buried in the family cemetery on his ranch. Notice also that the craftsmanship on the gravestone is rather rough.
The Navarro family planned to sell the ranch and in 1855 the Masonic Lodge in Seguin paid for the re-interment of Cooke’s remains to probably the San Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin. The Lodge paid for the coffin and grave, and the minutes don’t mention anything about gravestone, so I believe this gravestone went with the remains.
In 1936 Louis Kemp and the State Historical Commission wanted to move Cooke’s remains to the State Cemetery along with over 100 more notable early Texans. Mrs Max Weinert from Seguin, a member of the Historical Commission, located Cooke’s grave which had this very headstone in your video because she recorded the wording, both in English and Spanish. Here is the inscription:
Here Lie The Rem
ains of Co. W.G.Cooke
One of the Brave
Soldiers of Texas
Who Died on the
24th of Dec.1847
The gravestone is now broken because very little of the Spanish inscription remains.
Cooke’s remains were re- interred at the State Cemetery on Mar 2, 1837 with military honors. His grave is located 5 rows behind Austin on Republic Hill.
Cooke was a spectacular soldier during the Texas Revolution and Republic of Texas. He served at the Siege of Bexar, San Jacinto, Council House Fight, Battle of Campeche and was the last commander of the Republic of Texas Army. He was also the last Secretary of War and Marine for the Republic of Texas.
Read about him in the Handbook of Texas Online
Your so cool love your videos thank can hardly wait for the next one
Good job, Jeff. I'm reminded of the Bible verse (James 4:14), "What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes."
Yes indeed, walking in a cemetery is very sobering - only if you were made of stone would you be unaffected.
Remember me as you pass by
As you are now, so once was I
As I am now, so you will be
Prepare in time to follow me.
Seen on a tombstone somewhere, and for some reason I've always remembered it!
Thank you for telling the history of texas. Since I'm born and raised in west texas. I love history.
Hello Jeff, another great video, well done. Never too much of your videos and history lessons!
Glad you like them! My best always to you Wayne!
That was a beautiful stone dedicated to all the soldiers ❤❤
Incredible place. Wow!
It really is! Thanks!
I really appreciate Your take on stories. Loved the astronauts grave. It’s so true that we may be forgotten here but we are always known by God.
That was a really cool tour and information visit for those of us who will never be able to see history in that way, Thank You.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ VIDEO
Another great episode Jeff and Sarah! Keep up the good work my friend. You both are greatly appreciated! You go to places that few of your viewers can only dream we could go.
What a beautiful cemetery, they have made a first class park to honor Texans who have passed. Thanks for telling us about it.
Thank you Jeff I learn so much from you
Glad to hear it! Thanks Beth!
I have learned alot about Texas history from these videos. Thankyou History Hunters 👍👍
Our pleasure! Thanks Pam!
Very interesting as always. I'm not an american, just a history lover, wherever that history may come from 😊❤
Thanks! What country are you a citizen of?
@@jbenziggy I'm from England. America looks an awesome place.
Thanks again Jeff for the bonus video. Everytime I ponder life I have to snap myself out of it and get on with the here and now. Hope you had a good visit.
Central California watching
It's really hard to see memorials of 9/11 without tearing up. I tried to reenlist in the Navy but because I was already retired they told me leave this one to the younger ones. Our Soldiers, Airmen, Marines and Sailors did a fine job.
My mother kept a Dallas Morning News paper the day Kennedy was killed, she said people wept in the streets. Thank you for sharing this amazing cemetery.
always enjoy your videos... thank u
In 1990 I worked for a computer company named Digital Equipment. That year Digital rented Brown University for two weeks for a large sales conference. Digital had hired Gene Cernan as well as Grace Hopper as PR representatives for the company. One day at Brown I was very fortunate to get a table for lunch where Cernan was eating. He was a fascinating man and very humble. When I was 17 my mom had gotten me a job at Rockwell in Downy California as a lowly messenger on the Apollo Project. Mr. Cernan thanked me so humbly for being a part of the Apollo project. I was amazed..... here was a man who risked his life and he made me feel important for my little contribution. He became my hero then and there. I bought his book and videos and today feel as if I really knew him. Bob
That so such a cool experience! My only encounter with a moon walker was seeing Buzz Aldrin in the Rose Parade. I have a nice shot of him waving at me! Thanks for sharing!
Jeff, Great video! In my older years I have also found cemeteries amazing sources of history. It was very touching to see Gene Cernan's grave. I met Gene at a leadership conference and talked about his love for his Cessna 421. He was truly a great and humble individual.
So much useful history information 👍😊 watching fr jamaica 🇯🇲🏖️🌞😎
Fantastic show. Us Texans appreciate all that you have done to show so many angles and famous people from our Great State! I do wish that you were able to see my home for 1 year 7 months...... Bergstrom Air Force Base. But now, it is just an airport.......... I found 2 different aerial photos of Bergstrom and the Airport as it is now, and was able to see the location of the barracks that I lived in is now a huge parking lot for a rental car company. Hell maybe your rental was parked on top of my "home"......... But thank you so much for all of your work during your visit to your Son. I hope he knows how much talent his Father has. He is a lucky kid to have you as his Father. Take care Jeff, and thanks again!
never been to Austin, driven thru once , definite bucket list to visit this beautiful, great & historic cemetery!
We totally enjoyed the 2 videos about the graves in Texas. You are so right about we are here 1 day and die so soon that we all are just a whisper in the wind.
Reminds me of the hit song by Kansas, “Dust in the Wind.”
Another GR8 HH episode! Thnx Jeff!
Thanks Chris!
Hi jeff, so sorry about you mishap with south west airlines, I know you was not happy. I hope you made it home safely with out any more problems, you did so wonderful to go through the history walk through I enjoyed it. so much history there at the texas cemetary. Keep up your great work jeff ok, We love you both, and I appreciate you ok, Have a great day and god bless you.
Jeff, thank you for another wonderful video! I hope your visit with your son was a great time! I was only in kindergarten when JFK was killed. I don’t remember the day of but the Sunday after I remember well. My father was a very devout Christian. He never missed church. I remember coming home from church that day with my mom and my dad was watching TV coverage of the events. That is the only time I ever remember my dad missing church.
I enjoy your videos visiting the famous and non famous Jeff and Sarah, good job
Thanks so much! Happy to hear you appreciated the visit!
Thank you; I also visit graves of prominence in both civilian and Nat'l cemeteries where I live....
I love both parts of this vlog it really was interesting i enjoyed both parts. Thank you so much for this vlog❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the journey! You do magnificent work! Thanks, Larry
I truly appreciate the great compliment! Thank you so much!
Love your wonderful videos, so much history. I love walking tours of cemeteries
Glad you like them! Thanks Claudia!
Thank you Jeff. Hopead you enjoyed your trip to Texas. Steeped in history. Enjoyed it as always. Looking forward to your next video.
My goodness, this cemetery is so fascinating you could probably make a part 1 through to part 10.
I wonder how big that cemetery is. Thanks for sharing ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
Thanks again Jeff and Sarah I enjoyed very much I watched history on big foot his adventures he was a interesting man hope you all had a very wonderful Christmas 🎄 God bless you all and have a wonderful week
Another awesome video. I hear ya when you talked about all those people that used to walk the earth but are no longer here. Very sobering in deed. I was in grade school Nov 22 1963. I still remember large parts of that. Safe travels
I love these videos you do. Jeff you give a somber and respectful accounting of these people's lives. I missed seeing Sarah but somehow I think she was enjoying the trip also. Yes every time I go to a cemetery I think how short and fragile our life here is. Somehow it doesn't seem right that I have my Grandparents bedroom set 90 years after they bought it and 25 years since we buried them. I'd rather have them and all the others who've passed before and after.
I appreciate your very thoughtful comments. I often see how tragic it is that possessions outlast their owners. It doesn’t seem right.
Sarah didn’t go with me to Texas this time on account of her work demands. I’m happy to hear you like to see Sarah in our videos. Hopefully soon!
A History Hunter video during the week ? Yes please. Thanks, Jeff.
Did you see the first one I released on Sunday afternoon?
@@jbenziggy I did. Enjoyed it as well.
Jeff, thank you
thank you very much. I appreciate it.
I was in Jr. High in California, when President Kennedy was killed & school was canceled for the rest of the day. It hit me very hard because my mother died at 44 the previous April & she loved the president. I remember saying that I was glad that she was gone already because it would have broken her weak heart to hear the news she loved the president!!! I even wrote poems to the president & family & of course received several thank you letters from the White House!!! Mom didn't tell me that it wasn't actually the president & 1st Lady's signatures. I have a granddaughter who lives in Texas and shared these videos, we are going to get together next summer to do a little history hunting, too!!! Thank you both & Happy New Year!!!
you are the same age as one of my older brothers
I was an elementary school student in New Jersey when President Kennedy was killed
More great historical characters from the Austin Cemetery. Astronaut Gene Cernan stood out to me. Did you know he holds the lunar land speed record...it's only like 11 mph, but still wayyy cool!
Great video, I love the cemetery tours!
Enjoyed your two videos of Texas State Cemetery! That is one place I have wanted to visit, but as I live in Georgia & due to age & illness, I doubt I ever will, so your visit will have to do. Thanks, Jeff for a wonderful tour!
Oh Dan, you touch my heart. Sorry to that you can’t get around and are ill. I hope I can continue to enrich your life! Bless you for being on our adventures in spirit!
Well done!
Hey Jeff, Happy 2023 and may it be a great year for you and Sarah
Thanks! May 2023 be a great year for you too!
WOW! Did a nice job. You did an honor to the veterans. Can't show them all but by mentioning them they are not forgotten. That is some cemetery. Thanks for sharing.
Have you heard about southwest lately? 12-28-22 they really dropped the ball.
I always enjoy your vlogs. Always learn new things. That 3 legged guy must have been a character.
Strange phenomenon to be sure! The poor guy!
Great Part II. Loved the Astronaut stone with the moon. Great post.
Jeff both of videos were very interesting and thank you so much for sharing. I remember when 9/11 happened, and it is hard to believe that it has been more than 20 years. Keep up the good work, you and Sarah have a Happy New Year .😊
your research is amazing
What a awesome video. Really appreciate your expertise. Thanks.
Thank you so much, Mike!
Thanks again Jeff, son Thanks again for giving dad something to wear
Lol. Yeah and he gave it to me afterwards! Thanks Jeremy!
I remember when ceran wLked in space watched in on tv. He has a beautiful head stone. I love the saying on hisvhead stone❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the tour! Loved it, and learned a lot.
Our pleasure! Thank you very much, Clarence!
@@jbenziggy ur welcome
Jeff This is a beautiful video and I really enjoyed the details you pointed out about the people buried there. I could have watched for a couple of hours as it was so interesting.
Thank you very much!
Such great coverage of so many historical events and locations. Keep up the excellent work. For anyone inclined. Jfk to 9/11 a rich mans trick has a tremendous amount of info.

I was born in 1951, so there are many milestones that cling to my memory.
Love this video, and all cemetery videos that you done Jeff! Lot of history.. I love to hear histories and memories.
You’ve done any video about Arlington ?
👏🏼
Glad you enjoyed! I have not been to Arlington since I started my channel but yes, I have been there in my life and I would love to get back there someday.
2:16
Got confused when you called Senator Yarbrough a Congressman.
Although I don’t comment on every video, I do watch and very much enjoy everyone. Than you so much for what you do to keep history alive……Russell D.
Part II was well done & we didn't need to wait long for it either.
So many historical figures with their individual stories to discover & rediscover. Thanks, for a wonderfully educational & entertaining video.
Happy New Year, Jeff & Sarah.
Great video. When are going to do some video in Colma California? 😊 keep up the good work.
Part 2 was amazing Jeff so much history in the one place Thankyou for taking the time to share it Hope you all had a great Christmas xx
The Tom Landry grave here at Texas Cemetery is a cenotaph. He is actually buried in Dallas.
We enjoyed this cemetery tour Jeff, so much history! Amazing to see these beautiful head stones and learn about each background. Thank you for the information and your research. Happy New Year.
Glad you enjoyed it, Jerry! Have you been to Austin?
@@jbenziggy I don't think I've been to Austin, TX, Jeff. I went through basic training @ Lackland AFB in San Antonio, and Air Cargo Specialist training at Sheppard AFB in northern TX in 1975.
So much history that I did not even know about!!!!I still remember when President Kennedy was shot!!! I was a senior in High school and I will never forget it!!!!
I was just two years old so I don’t remember JFK dying. I do remember Robert Kennedy’s shooting though. Thanks for watching.
I really enjoy your videos. I look forward to whatever subject you present. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much, Tom! We appreciate how you feel about our channel and it gives us joy!
I share your thoughts about lives lived and history lost. Certainly a remarkable cemetery.
What a beautiful cemetery that is! And a great presentation by you Jeff. It's a shame that more and more you have memorial parks instead of traditional cemeteries, in my opinion there shouldn't be a rule where all of the markers have to be flat to the ground (I'm assuming that's so that the landscapers have an easier time mowing) and I've heard that story about yarbrough not wanting to ride in the car with Johnson, to where the president remarked "tell him if he doesn't ride with Johnson he'll be walking the entire way"LOL Kennedy was not to be fooled with when it came to politics!
If you’ll notice Lady Bird was sitting between them! Lol. Thanks for the awesome comment!
I wonder any if the lost battalions 141 infantry (Texas national guard) of WWII are buried there
Out riding 🏍️ I like to stop at cemetery s .. farm country.....
Same here! Thanks for watching!
👍👍👌👌✌✌⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
i was in 4th grade when Kennedy was shot
Is Astronaut Gus Grissom buried there
No he is not.
Yarborough's feud with other Texas dems is among reasons Jfk made the trip
it's pronounced ca-vul-ry, not cal-va-ry
man ain't nobody walk on the moon and never will be
Yeah and the earth is flat, right?
@@jbenziggy right
Hollywood Forever should have a memorial for him too.......
OMG so interesting!! Fantastic work. Thank you so much. Maybe part three some day ☺️
