But I like to write the equation as Q+W and then I’ll use work in as positive and work out as negative. You could do either method and they would both give you the same math in the end.

w is work out minus work in, your final equation should be Q-W not Q+W
Yes, most thermodynamicists like to say Q-W and W is work out. But I like to teach it as Q+W and work out is negative.
