    The song while you drive through Sheridan is perfect for the small town feeling and just makes me want to visit the place. As usual, you know how to pick the right music. Road trip through Montana and Wyoming is now on my bucket list after watching your videos.

    I live in Sheridan and it's a nice town . And yes , in bad weather they close the interstate . It doesn't happen to often , but it does happen .

      Wish I was a young man again and N.W. America would be my home. Some of my Irish ancestors settled in those parts in the mid eighteen hundreds, we have lost all communication with them a long time ago, sad. I still have a gold Waltham pocket watch they sent back to Ireland more than a hundred years ago, still keeps good time , only wish it could talk, Cheers.

    Freewayjim, I'm so obsessed with this video of yours. The music goes very well with the scenery. The slow pace of "Forty Mile Town" goes well with drive through downtown Sheridan. The fast-paced song "Carefree Highway" by Gordon Lightfoot really hits the spot on the wide open drive on Interstate 90 with the mountains in the distance.

  • @efrem1
    @efrem1 8 лет назад +1

    Carefree highway. An excellent song that you can play on any video with wide open spaces. Wonderful, wonderful job. For 17,000 people, Sheridan, WY sure has a lot of businesses.

  • @TheyCallMeMagz
    @TheyCallMeMagz 5 лет назад +3

    There's been a lot of changes to the North end of Sheridan since this was posted. They've made a completely new Interstate exit, complete with a brand-new truck stop/liquor store. Kmart was closed and replaced with EMIT Technologies, which manufactures machines for natural gas extraction if I'm not mistaken. There are a couple new factories in addition to that, including Weatherby, a hunting firearms manufacturer, which held a grand opening just yesterday. It's possible the city will see a lot of growth in the future.
    Few places I'd recommend stopping by in the area downtown:
    P.O. News/Flagstaff Cafe - Great cafe that makes great breakfast, burgers, and espresso.
    Red Bison Studio - Handmade pottery and pottery classes. I love handmade mugs, so you can pick up a souvenir.
    Brian's Boot and Shoe Co - Shoe store that has a huge selection of cowboy boots, if that's your fancy.
    Puzzle's Game & Hobby - Quaint little traditional games store right next to Brain's. Sells D&D, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine & Hordes, and other such games.

    You are right, winter storms can be brutal. The problem isn't the snow, but the wind. Did you notice the lack of trees? The wind can turn a light snowfall into a deadly snowstorm. In fact, the National Weather Service definition of blizzard doesn't include a set amount of snow, but does have a wind component of 35 mph.

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  8 лет назад +2

      Yes indeed, I've heard the wind can be quite an issue out there, whiteouts and such.

    Four years ago, my brother in law and I took a trip to Beartooth Pass. We had planned this as a motorcycle trip but time constraints and his cancer issues changed it into a car trip. We planned to return when I retired, which was last week.
    Unfortunately, John succumbed to his Agent Orange cancers November 12, 2020. All gave some, some gave all. He was laid to rest in the Beartooth Pass shirt that I bought for him in the gift shop on the Wyoming side of the pass.
    The T-shirts and Coffee Cups Tour 2017 will live on...

    I love the Wyoming videos, keep them coming! As for the road gates... we have those here in Iowa on I-35, beginning at Exit 111B (US-30 West) at Ames and continuing north. We can have blizzards here with whiteout conditions because that section of I-35 is really flat and open. I believe there are some gates along I-29 in Western Iowa as well. Not uncommon.

      That's fairly common in Colorado and Wyoming. Denver's Colfax Avenue is signed as Business Loop I-70 for its entire length. It is usually used to mark the route from the highway to downtown.

    Suggestion, FWJ:
    Go west from Sheridan over the Bighorns to CODY. You'll cross a beautiful mountain range and then enter a northern desert that you'll want to forget.
    Then keep going west from Cody towards the eastern entrance to Yellowstone. AS SOON as you get to the west side of cody, prepare to be AMAZED for the next several hours to Yellowstone.

    Nice video as usual! I find the signage interesting in Wyoming. There's quite a bit of Clearview that I didn''t expect (most notable in the Cheyenne footage I've seen), and then there's outdated looking/ALL CAPS (such as at 3:45) which I'd expect morel out on the old frontier.

    Excellent work, Jim. Your travels have inspired me to plan a few trips to parts of the country I haven't yet seen. You may have answered this question, but what has been your favorite trip?

      Thank you Gary! Traveling the country is a wonderful thing! That's a great and tough question....I'd probably go with the 2013 Trip only because it was my first time going west which opened up a whole new world to me.

    I saw mention made of those crossing gates, and I can confirm from first hand experience that Wyoming gets some tough winter weather (which I should mention also drags into the Spring where you can occasionally get some monumental snow storms). The crazy thing is you really don't need all that much snow to make things scary. In addition to the snow, Wyoming can be really windy, and it creates blowing snow conditions that can make driving those roads a white-knuckle experience. Last I went through, I couldn't see the lane markers and was literally using the those reflector posts on the side of the freeway to judge where the road was.

      As an added bit of trivia, Colorado has those same kind of crossing gates along I-70

      @Freewayjim  8 лет назад

      Interesting stuff! yes I've seen those on I-70 as well...in the southeast, some Interstates have the gates for Hurricane contraflow.

      It seemed very old and bumpy, could use some resurfacing. But by golly, it's such a beautiful country, I could really fall in love with the landscape.

      Here is an explanation for the red pavement. www.thedenverchannel.com/traffic/driving-you-crazy/driving-you-crazy-does-the-red-pavement-on-wyoming-highways-make-the-road-safer. Short answer: They used lava rock in the pavement.

      InterstateKyle I have been told that the red asphalt lasts longer and holds up better to fierce freeze thaw cycles. Is that true?

    Beautiful scenery and a beautiful cityscape in Sheridan. A population of 17,500 makes Sheridan look like a big major city by Wyoming standards. I-90 through Wyoming seems a lot more spectacular than that ungodly I-80.

    ...and you're right. It's common about 5-10 times a year (in Colorado) to have the Highways/Interstates to be closed due to inclement weather. With Northern Wyoming, it's likely much more common than what we have on I-25, I-70, & I-76 out in Colorado.

      TheSolarcatcher it is great to see Central Business Districts getting renovated and revitalized rather than encouraging more hideous suburban sprawl of lookalike single family houses, strip plazas, enclosed shopping malls, pawnshops, fast food joints, billboards, and overhead power lines. Suburbia is the cancerous ruination of America.

    You have been going through a lot of great towns so far in season 16. I think that the next city with over 100K people you'll go to is Billings, Montana. Afterwards, there are smaller cities in Montana like Bozeman and Missoula. Maybe you can get to bigger cities like Spokane, Seattle and Portland, Oregon.
