    3) when you see the real thing it makes you think (!)

      Yes and now. One of the main reason was that Vienna was not as attractive to be bombed by the allies as other cities.

    • @oddballsok
      @oddballsok 6 лет назад +5

      That is BS. Vienna has manufacturers too in its surrounding subburbs.
      Dresden ,also a beautiful centre, had in fact LESS of a war industry than Vienna.
      And Vienna harboured MORE "nazi" refugees from the east, than Dresden in 1945.
      Bombing , done by THE BRITISH , was more of a TERRORbombing than industrial bombing.
      Hence Vienna would have been a more attractive vengeance target.
      But:
      a) Vienna lay in the US Airforce sector, so THEY decided it to bomb or not to bomb.(obviously not so much).
      b) Amongst the allies lay the stupid misconception that the worst devils are the germans, and that the austrians were "victims" of the german nazi aggression.
      Austria was to be "avoided" by retaliation bombing.
      This is BS of course, as most of the worst autrocities were perpetrated by austrian nazis (outside austrian AH..).
      .

    The towers were defensive not offensive, they protected civilians. Every country has defensive structures, shelters, and anti air. What does your political believes has do do with this? Well in ww2 the Luftwaffe General (General Der Flieger Ludwig Wolff) said that
    "I was very pleased about the construction of this tower, because about 6,000 civilians were able to find shelter in the tower during attack, and a hospital for the civilian population could be created. The shooting could have been carried out in the same manner , e.g., from a 'flak hill'."
    in reality Flaktürme have got 10 floors what's clear is that there are 3 Air raid Shelters and 1 for Hospital
    also Flaktürme can be used as defensive tower against ground attack.
    so my point is that the "Flaktürme" is not just terrible but it does help German civilians and act like defensive tower in case of either ground or air attack.

      This narrator is a typical person who has LITTLE concept of the WORST ERA of human history which occurred just 80-100 years ago, perhaps he is just a beginning WWII historian, but as such, he should be more careful what he casually says, although his photography in this video is excellent and this video post is appreciated by me. However, at 1:15 he says "Hitler was that delusional lunatic (A TRUE STATEMENT) who discriminated against people purely because of their religion" (LAST PART NOT TOTALLY TRUE). The only big "religious group" that could apply to was the Jewish People ( I know of no other group other than the anti-gov't authority Jehovah's Witnesses who were persecuted for their RELIGION by the nazis). The Jewish People's persecution by Hitler was, if you study nazi statements and behaviour, more oriented to their exploitive economic practices towards Germans at the time (which became the nazi "reason or excuse" to persecute them) as well as their cultural / religious / ethnic differences, AND BECAUSE Nazis HAVE TO HATE SOME SORT OF SOCIETY that is not like them (it is part of their perverse and warped psychology, i.e. a severe mental disorder), for these reasons, the Jewish People became convenient, hated targets by the Nazis. True as well is that due to the Nazi mental illness tendency to stereotype EVERYONE they hate as a society rather than as individuals (and on a more generalized scale racial and religious "mass" stereotyping was typical of European society at the time) ALL JEWS were easily persecuted by the Nazis and their followers, not just Jewish business or rich people. If it wasn't the Jews being targeted by the nazis, it would be (and sometimes was) some other group for some other reason, e.g., many Slavs, Roma Gypsies and Gays and Disabled People were also severely victimized by the nazis. It is VERY TRUE that in general European society, the Jewish Religion was disliked by many Christian people due to a belief in the Biblically stated Jewish role in the execution of Christ, something that goes back many centuries in European Christianity, so in that sense, the Jewish People were persecuted due to their religion by the greater larger society. I invite any Jewish scholars or Holocaust historians to comment on what I, a lifetime investigator and student of WWII, have written here. Casual internet "think-they-know-it-alls" and Pure Nazis need NOT comment, although they will, because for both that is their human nature.

      He could have mentioned how ineffective the towers still were as even the best anti-air weaponry wasn't technically all that amazing at the time. One German officer estimated that an average of 3000 shells had to fired until a single plane was shot down. However the flak towers proved to be useful for their shelters and I'm glad that part wasn't missing from the video. It's just kinda funny how a secondary function became a lot more important than their main one as the towers saved a lot more people than they killed

    Why is this tower terrible? It saved lives and was a form of defense.

  • @gjoerg1
    @gjoerg1 7 лет назад

    A few comments from a local Viennese:
    1) The reason why the tower looks so run down and full of cracks is that around 1990 the city tried to blast them. Unsuccessfully though, as it was found that the maximum charge to avoid cracking all the windows of the neighborhood was not strong enough for the tower.
    2) There are 2 more of these pairs of towers in Vienna, still in perfect shape. One serves as an Aquarium ( worth visiting), with a coffee house on top with a magnificent view over Vienna (near Mariahilferstrasse). Its "brother" is still in a military premise some 500 m away. I was actually stationed there during my military service in 1979 - sic! :-(
    3) These towers, from a defense point of view were not super effective. They were mostly built to portray the readiness of the regime to defend until the "Endsieg" (final victory), which fortunately was not achieved. Otherwise I would live now in a similar world as North Koreans do.
    4) As to Adolf Hitler (he actually renamed himself from a less sounding name: Schickelgruber): He was a lunatic. He also had absolute power. His word was law - by law. And he was responsible for murdering 6 Mio Jews on his order, with many helping hands in Germany and Austria, not counting the millions of other people, that still leave a dent in the population pyramid as shown by the statistic central office.
    Nice pictures anyway - I've seen the tower many times IRL (lived around the corner there), but never so near and from top. Well done!

    Hello from Vienna /Austria ! for your info : The well visible heavy damage of one of the two towers in the Augarten
    is the result of an explosion in 1946. Playing children have set fire to

    roof of the bunker - which subsequently fell back into its bedding - but also destroyed the windows in a wide radius.! and not 8 complexes But only 6 in Vienna !

If it wasn't the Jews,, being targeted by the nazis, it would be (and sometimes was) some other group for some other reason, e.g., many Slavs, Roma Gypsies and Gays and Disabled People were also severely victimized by the nazis.

    I live in the 13th district and my favorite hobby next to shooting
    is metal detecting. The District is called Hietzing and it's at the border of Vienna, so there were lots of FLAK positions as defense for the city. The woods are full of FLAK shrapnel and parts of the fuzes. There are also aluminium small pieces from the planes themselves in the ground.

    Very nice and fascinating video!
    There is only 1 little wrong detail. This tower wasn't build just after 1940. The tower we are looking at is a Type III Flaktower build late war ( summer 1944 - januari 1945) Construction took about 6 months. The tower is located in the Augarten.
    The tower at Augarten was heavily damaged after the war. The Russians tried to blow it up, only managing to damage the lower floors, The upper floors however have been severly damaged due to a explosion of Flak ammunition in late 1946.Causing the damage which can be seen in the video.
    There are flaktowers in Germany that have been completed just after 1940, but these are located in Berlin. They are the Type I bunkers and have been demolished after the war by the allies.
    But again very nice video, hope you will make more about this subject!

I really think it was a clever move to transform an ugly war monument into a beautiful and educational tourist attraction! Apart from that: Great video, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in Europe :)

      Ok, let's clarify things. "the comments just prove how sensitive and overprotective Trump supporters are" or maybe we're just sick of anybody that thinks their opinion matters when it really doesn't speaking up (I'm thinking celebrities here). Even the latest polls show more than 50% of the US population supports his immigration plans, so it's not even the majority of the country is against them, just the people making the most noise. And he isn't stopping ALL immigration from 7 countries. This is a temporary ban. 90 days. That's all he's banning people.

    • @rubevin
      @rubevin 7 лет назад +2

      Mr.Dr.Professor Toaster, thats the biggest problem about some people in the US right now. You guys just split completely apart because you have only a two party system. All you hear is Trump and republicans or Obama and democrats. If something says something bad about Obama people shoot back with Trump doing the same or vice versa. So people forget facts and actually thinking about humanity. It is true that Obama did a similar thing so why are people going so crazy on Trump?! Well if you actually get all the information right instead of just reading headlines you will find a clear difference between the two travel bans.
      (Besides complaining that Obama did the same you should ask yourself actually why did we not stand up back then?! and see it as a reason more to do something about it right now!)
      However, Obama did it for ONE country where Al-Qaeda was manly acting during that time. Moreover, it was not as strict towards other citizens of that country. Trump on the other hand chose 7 countries which are supposedly a danger to the US. There is no real reason for those exact countries. If its ISIS or Al-Quaeda again, he is clearly missing out some countries! Countries that have maybe 1% of "terrorists" but are delivering oil or other sources are not a part of this ban. Furthermore, the ban is so much stricter towards the 99% (or even more) of the countries citizens who have nothing bad in their mind.
      Imagine you live in a world where those countries are the USA and the USA is those 7 countries. Your military is a "group of terrorists"(I know it is probably a harsh comparison for you and the US military is probably 100 times bigger than any terrorist group) and those countries say US citizens cant come in and flee from all the destruction or simply visit friends or family. How would you feel? Would you just sit on your arse and do nothing?
      I guess no one even read that far...if yes what do you think? I'd love to hear some more opinions. Even if you think different

    The Germans called them Flakturm, literally "Flak Tower". One of the reasons the towers existed, as opposed to having the Flak guns on the ground, was by raising the Flak above surrounding buildings they would have much clearer and longer shots at low level intruders.
    I first knew of these quite a while ago as one was mentioned in a novel, German woman at home during the war looking at the tower and feeling all that it represented. I had thought that the writer was exercising a bit of poetic license until I set out to confirm their existence, found them in a book on WW2 German engineering. I have no clue now what the novel was called, it just shows you can sometimes find knowledge in the strangest of places.

    There are actually four more towers in Vienna. In total there are three pairs of Towers. The other four are partly still in use today, one is an aqua zoo, others are used as data centers. The two located in Augarten should have been destroyed, but the early attempts only slightly damaged them. Removing them would be too costly and/or too dangerous as they are situated in densly populated areas.

    Drone flights in EU cities are generally not allowed without explicit, prior permission. If you didn't get it there is a possibility some bureaucrat will find you and put a hold on your passport, restricting any future EU visits. Unlikely sure, but they take their jobs pretty seriously so it's possible. I'm not a lawyer or an expert on this topic, but I do live here, own a drone and can promise you it's no picnic.
