- It took us over a year to collect all the back issues of the original Skateboarder Magazine (1975-1980)- once we had all of them we decided to scan every page- then we decided to make this short film to celebrate the magazine and all the cool photos.

Up in rafters in my garage , all double trash bagged & boxed up , are my collection of magazines from my youth , including most ( if not all) issues of this iconic magazine and time frame from my youth. As a native Southern Californian here in San Diego , I grew up skateboarding almost every park, pipe & pool & ditch ever put in that magazine where & whenever possible. Places like Mt Baldy pipe, the “L” pool, the Fruit-bowl, the Soul-bowl at SDSU, Kona Bowl ( at 9th & Hale st. in Escondido) and countless other places, and drove my ‘65 Corvair with as many buddies as we could cram into it on epic adventures of equally epic proportions. Thanks for giving this 63-1/2 year old some great memories guys , the kind that last a lifetime. C-ya 😎👍
Lance mountain …. I don’t wanna live in a world without this man.
I used to read the magazine until it was falling apart. Seeing the pictures and wishing I could find an empty swimming pool or having a skatepark in my Midwest town. The Dogtown crew had such an influence on my crew. They were our heroes!
Thanks guys. Almost made me cry thinking how the new generation will never get to know the value of suspense and anticipation. No instant gratification then moving on to the next input of stimulation. There was a treasure on the way and you just had to wait and imagine. Upon arrival the magazine was slowly devoured until the next issue. You could have made this video 2 hours long and it still would have been to short. Love the link to the archives. Great job 👏
Thanks !!🙏
A single Val surf ad gave me literally years of dreams for things I’d never have. But boy did I dream.
I was like 10. I didn't like to read. My Mom bought me a subscription to Skateboarder Magazine. At first I looked at the pictures, then I started to read the captions. Eventually I was reading the whole magazine. Thanks Skateboarding! for teaching me to read.
My heart and soul thrives with influence from SixStair.
Don't know why I'm just discovering this documentary in 2024, but thank you for making it! I skated during this time in Southern California at my "home parks" of Skatopia and Lakewood. I was never any good and could only dream of appearing in "SkateBoarder", but at least I can say I was there and part of this scene. When I meet guys now that are my age (60) and I find out that they never skated, I actually feel kinda' sorry for them as they don't know what they missed. And on the other hand, when I do meet somebody my age who did skate (my UPS driver is one!), we immediately have a huge thing in common and can ramble on for hours about the fun we had back in the day. Thank you again!
Awesome video! And thanks for scanning those pages!!!
I relive my youth through Six Stair...hell yeah!!!!
A flood of memories from watching this.
This is great! Blessed we are who lived this❤
Im so stoked this is back on the web one of my favorite skate documentaries
4:22 - left picture, over vert 4:33 My Baldy - the "BigBang" of skating - Pipes in the desert, some of the best - We were searching high and low for anyone who had heard of pipes going anywhere on a truck on the beltway around Washington to be like the Cali guys was the holy grail at the time. We ended up in some under roads, in the dark, full of trash but never any just sitting someplace on a construction site.
I could talk all day about the influence, and the memories. It's just crazy how much this mirrors life from 12 or 13 years old for me through 80-81 when I was out of school - I didn't know it all bombed at the time. Out of school, get a job, a girlfriend and I guess we grew up??? and what was supposed to follow it up didn't happen? I'm 60, but still have a board, never quit riding but what happened to skating confused me. It got all weird and looked like something I didn't recognize anymore with punk, and grunge and 2 tail boards? wtf is up with that? tiny wheels? I blame it on the board, no one knew what fucking direction they were going and just made a mess....Sucks to be them, but it was amazing to be us when Skateboarder Mag was everything.
Thank you for this. I don't know what else to say.
you guys have always crushed!!! thank you for this opus!
So GOOD !
Will there ever be a hardcover Anthology Book of this Amazing Magazine?
Fuck yeah!!!!!
Lance... ha! He's the best
The Bible of skateboarding
Alan Gelfand never made the cover which is a crime.
Thrasher kicks so much ass compared to some surfing influenced shit. Stecyk and Phelps forever.
You should host your own scanned images. Transworld's website has since turned to crap.
