The history of skateboarding is so sacred. Not everyone needs to be a connoisseur of skateboarding history, but everyone needs to know at least the basics. It's like...here we are in 2023 on our skateboards. Maybe you're at a skatepark, a curb, a parking lot, or your drive way. There is an endless amounts of dudes who are responsible for where you are right now; Salba being one of those guys. You need to appreciate and understand why you are on a skateboard today.

Salba is a true Zen master. I met him at Kona back in 2017. He was one of the most genuine and gracious people I have ever encountered. I am also a proud owner of one of his hand stenciled skateboard decks (which I hang in my recording studio at home). His relentless passion for skateboarding and specifically pool riding is unmatched. So grateful that he still skates and is happy to do interviews like this. Aside from being rad AF, he has an attitude that's good for life. Sound wisdom from Salba always.

I started skating in the mid 80's. We didn't have access to TV, videos or magazines etc where I was. A few kids moved to my little town from LA and brought stories. Their parents worked in the Valley, or SBC or whatever and they were the lifeline to the scene. It was like oral history. There were no pools and very few parking lots but we did what we could with what we had. Eventually a couple families built half pipes so we had two places to try transition. I heard about Alva, TH, Natas, Mag from these dudes and just stayed stoked. My first board was a Sims with Kryptonics wheels and gullwing trucks. I skated those trucks for several years, but changed boards a bunch. Today my daily is a Salba Tiger VX. I'm glad I got it when I did. I'm so glad I saw this. So many great memories!

Here’s my Salba story. As a teenage skate punk in Northern California in the 80’s, I guess he wasn’t so cool because I needed a new deck and his was marked way down and super cheap. Maybe it was an old model. I bought it and planned on painting because I guess I didn’t think he was cool. Don’t remember. So I’m 15 with rattle can of black paint and an off duty cop tackles me, roughs me up and arrests me for having a spray can as a minor. He even fabricated a charge of graffiti. So Salba is responsible for my misdemeanor record as a minor. Thanks a lot.

I see the future of flatground competitions like this-
Small stick-on accelerometers on the noise and tail of the board with a small wireless antenna, built in a way that does not effect the skating. Same thing in both of the skater's shoes. The data is inputted into software that knows the specific rotation for each trick with a margin for error built in. This way you can truly define an impossible from a 3-shuv etc. No more judging by eye, no more ambiguity between how each skater does a trick. They must rotate the board within a certain margin of error, and their feet must stay within a certain bounds as well. The feet software could have a larger margin for error, like accounting for different styles of tre-flips. As long as there is a set boundary for what is and what isn't a trick, I think this cound revolutionize the competition side not just for skateboarding but for other judged competitions in general.

I totally remember watching Salba on Wheels of Fire. I think I have still have that VHS ion my mother's addict, with Animal Chin, H-Street, Questionable and Love Child. I started skating in the mid 1980's up to like 1996. I felt like the early POWER skating years of guys like Salba or Hosoi on vert simply looked better. It felt good to skate that way. I regret that I stopped. Two of my old buddies still skate today. I wish I had never given it up.

Superb film, thank you Santa Cruz.
I haven’t skated in years, kind of think it might really hurt now if I got back on it, still have my boards, used to wear Santa Cruz tees to work in the 80’/90’s might have to buy some more or dig out the old ones as I probably still have them somewhere 😮
