My daughter bought about 5 items from Alibaba on singles day and we are from Singapore and she said that the items will arrive in about a week. She said that the items are comparatively cheap.
Gotta love singles day here in China! Haha All my friends spent hundreds, if not thousands yesterday... I got a new gym membership (a BRAND new gym) for 1,800 RMB for 2 years, not bad! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Poppy, I'm a Chinese student study at a small town in the U.S..I`ve been showing my friends who are interested in China through your awesome RUclips channel. Ja You!
Thanks again Poppy!. You know, those delivery lockers are amazing solution for the crazy amount of deliveries. I opened an empty locker "wheres my stuff?!" A chinese friend took about 3 minutes on the phone to sort it out...... no problem. The company that runs the boxes are seriously on point! They were able to check the video to see the delivery guy couldnt fit the box in the locker, and he forgot to cancel the empty one. Chinese people are really serious about shopping on line, and have created an amazing industry!

Hi Poppy, I am a foreign student from Belgium studying in China. I just want to let you know that these 'weird' messages on your phone are advertisements or promotions from your phone company in China. You can just ignore them like most of the people do. Have a nice day.

There is also AliExpress which is the eBay equivalent ! TaoBao and TMall is also awesome because they use flat fee/weight shipping which means you can accumulate all your purchases from different sellers for up to 21 days in a warehouse hub before they ship for one shipping fee.
Thanks Poppy, this lovely and informative video managed to fill some gaps in my knowledge of Alibaba and Single's Day. A lady in a video was once asked what she thought of Alibaba. She replied: ''You can literally buy anything from children's toys to adult toys!'' :D
For the buttons at 7:30. from top to bottom, they are 1: I want to pick up; 2: I want to deliver a package. 3: deposit a package (Maybe you just need a place to put your package temporarily, I haven't been in China for many years, I just try to translate it literally .) 4: I am the courier (or postman? mean the guy who brings the package to you) . By the way, there is a cool app called "Youdao Translate-Voice&Camera", you can install it on you phone for free, it can take a picture and translate words both from English to Chinese and from Chinese to English.
I'm so psyched for your videos because I'm moving to China in about a month. Also, could you use google translate to take a photo of the text you can't read and have it translate? I'm pretty excited for your apartment tours coming up!
@7’32” the menu options on the screen of self-service station are “取”(pickup), “寄”(send),“存”(store),“我是快递员”(for delivery person to use). I understand how you are struggling with the local language because I was in similar situation as you are when I studied in Quebec: I found myself in an unfamiliar environment where most people spoke a language that I did not speak and It was overwhelming at first....
Wait a second ... don't you use the Google Translate App ... it is breathtaking, select the language and english, download it for using offline, then tap the little camera+ icon and let the magic happen : realtime OCR of the video and translation, even the textcolor will match ... hope it helps ... tried it on my parcels from shenzhen, CN !!!
I am from Hangzhou and I am proud. U can even go by bus and underground using Alipay. If you would visit Hangzhou once you will love it for sure I suppose! It has a good reputation of living standard in China and great new technologies inspiration. Love ur videos and keep up the good work. Xxxx
Hey poppy. Just download “Youdao translate” on your phone. That will give you the real time translation while you are using your camera. The Chinese words will be automatically translated in to English, which is pretty handy and you will never feel worried about the package issues etc... Also, sometimes I use this to translate English fiction into Chinese by just flipping the page and the translation will show up immediately. So yeah, have a great time in China.
Great video Poppy! I've been watching your video all along. I would like to make a little correction to the sales revenue on Singles' Day, the sales you quoted is just the revenue of Alibaba, which is the largest portion of the full internet revenue. Adding other e-commerce websites' revenue, the 24hrs whole Internet revenue would be ¥253.9 billions or $38.2 billions. Thanks for the video and can't wait to watch your next update.
Love your videos, Poppy. As an Aussie living in Zhengzhou, I can relate to most of them. I rarely did online shopping until getting a Chinese girlfriend at the end of last year. Now we buy almost everything online. For singles day I bought two pairs of shoes for less than half the brick-and -mortar store price, plus a top quality Braun electric shaver WAY cheaper than the usual price! Fortunately, these days I don't have to worry about deciphering the text messages when a package is delivered. Hope you got your package eventually.
Last year 2016, I bought almost all of the decorating materials for my apartment in China...from floor tile to washing machine...I spent about 50k on that day...
put your videos on apps like Weibo, kuaishou, meipai, bilibili, you will gain more views, cuz Chinese people are curious about foreigners opinions and their life in China and many people will like to see the beautiful places you have been to through your videos.
Damn i didnt know about this, mind blowing stuff, that billionaire is a skilled martial artist as well hes in a movie with donnie yen, jet li, and other martial arts masters/actors
Hey poppy, happy to see that for you‘r getting used to your new life here in China!I knew you and your videos on a website called Bilibili, which is more like RUclips in China than Youku, users of Bilibili are younger and more active,I’m sure that you will be so much more popular and welcomed there, you can try to create a channel on Bilibili if you want😊
Poppy are you in Beijing? my wife and I are arriving for the first time there, we live in Orlando FL...super excited :) we love your channel! thanks so much for all the awesome feedback.
Which city do you live in? Those orange boxs and the whole package pick up process look so dope! I've lived in Toronto for 6 years now. I have no idea how fast China changes. wow. I'm going back to China in two years. So excited.
I bought it from the SONY official online shop on Tmall. And there are only official shops of famous brands on Tmall(Tian Mao)while there are thousands of small companies on Taobao. So if you need quality assurance that you can use Tmall, as if you just need cheap product, use Taobao.
Two things you need to know about the delivery boxes: 1. Some of them charge you if you don't pick up your package within 24h (usually 1 kuai), you can pay by scan the QR code using WeChat or AliPay; 2. Some of them do not allow you to open the box using the code for more than 3( or 5?) times, instead of charge you, they want you to register their app or WeChat Service Account, so they can "serve you better" (send you ads)
Where do people get their regular mail sent to? And why doesn't each "house" in the area have its own assigned box? It would make life a lot easier for everyone.
For regular mail we have mail box, but it is too small even for the smallest package. These delivery boxes are provided by those box companies. It'll be too costly for them to provide delivery box for everyone, so we have to deal with the "shared" delivery box reality.
One thing is, China is not really "communist" after 1978 despite the name of the ruling party. The government can not take over a private company without legal reasons now. It's a state-capitalism country now, probably more capitalist than most of the European "socialist" countries :)
+mcdull100 European countries are not socialist, but social democratic which is capitalism with a few social programs mostly in existence to pacify the working class as communism gained much popularity in the western working class after 1917. China is definitely communist which is why they have lifted over 800 millions of people out of poverty and continuing to improve the lives of their entire population. Being communist does not mean they cant participate in the world economy dominated by the capitalist west, it just mean they have to adjust to it and as the stats show they have done so successfully. If China had a capitalist model like the US for example they would not have lifted 800 million out of poverty and they would have millions upon millions of homeless.
Use the Google or Microsoft translate feature where you can take pictures of text on signs/screens and it will translate the text for you. It helped me a lot in South Korea.
Hi ya Poppy happy shopping day unreal isn't it wow but just love the delivery box's we have a P.O.Box but if a parcel arrives we have to go during opening times and get in line yuk. Looking forward to your next posts as they are so full of information about the place we most love going to and helpful stay safe and bubbly
Really great & informative, can't believe how much I've learned (enjoyably!) watching your vids. I lived in Singapore/Hong Kong in the early '80s and China was still "kind of a dark mystery" to us then. Your perspective sure takes me back... btw how about Google Translate (camera function) for On-Screen text instructions?
Hi Poppy i have been following your vlog since a while now specially the once from china, and i must say its very interesting and have inspired me to visit china, and thats exactly what i am doing today. I will be in Shenzhen tomorrow :). hopefully it will be a great trip :). Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
IT said you input the "take things code" too many time ,the service reach the limit, if you want to get more service from the locker company, please use the QR to activate your account.
Poppy where are you going with those new shoes? You only need flipflops in SZ. great video almost 10 mins this time. Alibaba will be happy to see your video and maybe you will get offers to review products and services!
you should install a translation app. Like google translate, it has a camera feature that allows you to see translation when you pointing your camera directly to the text.
Hi there, I'm a Chinese subscriber. Next time, if you've got Chinese message that you don't understand, i'm more than happy to help you. BTW, another informative and well amazing video.
Great video and great points Poppy! Just one thing that comes to my mind, although Jack Ma is not the "CEO" of the company, but he's definitely still the most influential person on the board of directors and in charge of the company. He still makes the most important decisions in Alibaba as for now.
China basically has a communist political system and a capitalist economic system. That's why entrepreneurship and consumerism are promoted and encouraged by the Chinese government. Love your videos :)
China is running its country as if a big cooperation. You never see democratic elections in a big company either. Decisions are mostly made by the managing board. However that doesnt mean the managing board doesnt listen to its workers. Advise goes from bottoms up, and decisions goes from top down.
That’s true. The government can’t just “take over” Alibaba, though. That would be hilarious. What the government does is that it owns all the important assets to consolidate its power, while leaving out enough space in the private sector where Alibaba succeeded in.
WRONG. Socialist system with Chinese characteristics. Before America was "discovered" by the europeans, China was already the largest economy in the world. For more than a thousand years, China traded with much of the known world, including with Rome. During that time, the anglos were not even a people yet. So China and Chinese know a thing or two about trading, business and making money. China was the most technologically advanced and socially developed area of the world. China was building cities, writing poetry, and waging war against barbarians when europeans were still living in caves and forests in germania and other places and cutting themselves and dancing around the fireplace.
It's so much fun to watch your video! If you go somewhere distant next time, maybe you can try the DiDi (aka Chinese Uber). I do know there's an English version but I don't know if English address is supported.
How much did Alibaba pay you? Me, Jingdong, will pay you double! Hahahahahaha it's a joke in China. FYI, Jingdong(JD) is Alibaba's main competitor in China.
so 2:16 the message appeared in the screen indicating that you have used up your free quota of delivery collection box this month. But still the software needs to have language options. that's the right solution.
Lol, no Google, Facebook, or even RUclips in China. However, most foreigners have VPN's to access it. The Chinese government definitely knows who is using them and they will monitor you. They are always trying to knock the VPN's down but it's a cat and mouse game because the VPN Companies find a way to breach the Great Firewall of China.
Google translate works in China, so at least the CCP has some common sense. but you can't use your camera for real time translation, so I think it's probably Google's problem, they deactivate some features in certain region

you are right. The pronunciation and listening of Chinese are much easier than other languages because every single Chinese word only has a vowel and a consonant, so it is rare for Chinese native speakers to use words connection and sounds change when they are talking especially for standard Mandarin. Besides, Chinese grammar is quite easy and straightforward and even freestyle in daily communication, for example, "你吃了吗” 和“吃了吗你” 和“吃了?” are same meaning, the subjective of the first one and the second one is reversed, the third one we ignored the subjective, so you can use anyone you like.
If you study Chinese, you don't need to memorize thousands of vocabularies. 1500 words can make you be familiar with almost all the words you can see in daily life but you are possibly not able to understand the specific meaning of each expression. Chinese don't have a high requirement on intonation, which is another factor making it simple.
So if you just want to use Chinese to do general communication, it can' t be easier. But the difficult part of Chinese is to understand the artistic conception and emotional description of each Chinese word and expression. Obviously, if you want to read Chinese Classic literature or modern prose, that is another story. But I don't see any requirement for you to do that because there are less and less Chinese people who can figure out those kinds of literature nowadays. In addition to this, dialects of Chinese maybe quite hard than other languages and the awkward thing is there are too much different dialects in China.

Use the Google or Microsoft translate feature where you can take pictures of text on signs/screens and it will translate the text for you. It helped me a lot in South Korea.
Nice vid pop.. 11/11 wow!!
Really nice video! I just bought a lot on 1111. That was insane.
Yeah delivery boxes are so different here it took a while to get used to! haha
Brian Herron google translate is super cool,it's most convenient app
Thank you! I use all the translate apps don't worry haha
this wonderful girl always makes interesting videos.
Amazing video about China. Very interesting and informative. I've watched all your videos and love them all. Can't wait to see your video, Poppy.
Lol, you can actually change the language setting on the electronic box
Nai Queng
Actually only 8000 foreigners have a Chinese green card till now... So... No one probably cares...
Nai Queng You can use a translating app tho... It reads photos
That's awesome I hope you have a great trip! Don't forget to have hot pot, it's a specialty in Shenzhen!
IT said you input the "take things code" too many time ,the service reach the limit, if you want to get more service from the locker company, please use the QR to activate your account.
haha that's hilarious! My landlord orders way too much stuff!
Hi there, I m from ShenZhen. Hope you are enjoying the city.
Poppy where are you going with those new shoes? You only need flipflops in SZ.
great video almost 10 mins this time.
Alibaba will be happy to see your video and maybe you will get offers to review products and services!
Cool video and cool singles' day in China!
Poppy you said the chinese word “nihao”is so cute😂
you should install a translation app. Like google translate, it has a camera feature that allows you to see translation when you pointing your camera directly to the text.
Enjoyed to watching your vlog ^^
Hope you enjoy your stay here in China!
He still makes the most important decisions in Alibaba as for now.
i bought a razer earphone at 11.11 and i got the package the next day the delivery speed is insane
Dope!!
I love watching your videos. I enjoy your views on China, you and that travelight girl (Jordan?) are just adorable and full of energy! Love you girls!
It's true
yeah ,you precisely portray China political system
I thought you were learning chinese?
Gbenro Oduyela well... it is almost impossible for foreigners outside east-Asia cultural zone to learn that language...
Lincoln Lin 我的男朋友被我调教的普通话还有广东话溜的很
Mattis Lin not true, i live in Canada and have been learning chinese for almost a year
she is
I love this commerce info.. incredible, amazing. Thank you for sharing that.
How much did Alibaba pay you? Me, Jingdong, will pay you double!
Hahahahahaha it's a joke in China. FYI, Jingdong(JD) is Alibaba's main competitor in China.
Alex Wang 哈哈😂😂😂
你这个笑话 如果当面说 还挺让人尴尬的 哈哈红红火火恍恍惚惚
哈哈哈哈哈哈哈哈哈哈哈哈
23333333 so awkward
这个梗人家不一定懂啊23333
Thanks for sharing how the orange box works. Its cool to learn how people live on the other side of the world! :D
She's beautiful and trendy!
so 2:16 the message appeared in the screen indicating that you have used up your free quota of delivery collection box this month. But still the software needs to have language options. that's the right solution.
and another hard mode solution is ... to learn Chinese...^_^
i love your energy, you are awesome!
I just realised a cool coincidence...11th November is also Armistice Day in the UK and we wear red paper poppies! :D
it's the same all over western countries, not just UK
tc88888888
I think only people in the UK and Commonwealth countries wear red poppies. People in France wear blue cornflowers.
Remembrance Day in Canada 🇨🇦.
yeah same here in Australia too
you know what else poppies are for? Opium! THE opium that England forced on China and started the Opium war
more vids please! love the music
麻痹, 双11,我在沃尔玛买了4根巨大无比的法棍:O
I miss these informative poppy videos.
Perhaps try google translate with the camera function?
Quirky Box ...google is not always accessible in China. Baidu has a similar, always effective, translation app
@Veronica Turtle Heart Google searching can't work in China, but the google translation can work normal.
Great video! Which platform do you use to shop online?
it's addictive. I spent about 2k at 11 11. but I'm just a student 😁
damn haha
Awesome video!
Hello Poppy, my creepy comments are as follows:
1) Your face is so watchable 2) You are beautiful
3) Your face is very expressive
4) You have American teeth (that's a compliment)
5) I like your sassy walk at 1:15
6) You have good taste in music
7) I hope all those "packages" your landlord is asking you to collect for him don't contain mind-altering chemical contraband.
