Ford Transit Connect Micro Camper Van Bed Size: Can Tall People Fit? Two People? Slat Bed Build

- We recently bought a 2013 Ford Transit Connect and converted it into a micro camper van. We often get asked, "Can two people fit in a Ford Transit Connect Camper Van?" and "What is the bed size?" as well as "How does a tall person fit?" With Mike being over 6ft tall it is understandable that we get asked these type of questions considering the small size of our van!
In this video we answer these questions, show how our bed works and how we BOTH fit in the van. We explain our slat bed build design as well as our bench and demonstrate how it converts from a bench to a bed. We also show how we built a bed that allows us to have extra bed space!

Length of cargo area - 6ft (72 inches) = 182.88cm
Width of cargo area between wheel wells - 4ft (48 inches) = 121.92cm
Foam mattress pad - 6 inches = 15.24cm
Bed wooden slats - 1 inch thick by 3 inches wide = 2.54cm thick by 7.62cm wide
Width of bench (Front rail to back rail of bed in "bench mode") - 23 inches = 58.42cm
Length of bench - 56.5 inches = 143.51cm
Widest bed with (extended bench in "bed mode") - 3ft (36 inches) = 91.44cm
Top stationary bench width - 14 inches = 35.56cm
Top stationary bench length - 32 inches = 81.28cm

Really good. I am 6’ tall and in my 2013 TC, I just move the seat back forward, put a pillow behind it, all set. Don't have to slide the seat forward, at my height. I love the 2013. Everything is just right. Here in Arizona, you can drive all over BLM and State land on dry dirt roads. What a camper!

I really enjoyed your video and the ideas are great. One thing I learnt from an antique furniture restorer is that if you rub some candle wax on the moving parts of the bed they will slide in and out easier. It's a trick you can use on antique furniture with sticking drawers etc. Maybe this helps.

Guys, your video was super helpful - had the Transit Connect on my shortlist for quite a while, though its availability is rather low in Germany, compared to similar models. But since I'm 6.4, I was a little hesitant - till now! My layout looks kind of similar - just need my van now 🤘 all the best from Germany, safe travels :)

cool, I've been thinking about just getting on cuz of ease of driving and just putting a bed in it!
That was pretty much how we rolled on our first time out in the van! We knew we would want the extra features (when we had time to actually build them), but if you just need a place to sleep it totally works!

Priceless measurements & size/height perspective, thanks. My husband is 6'6" & skeptical of any/all camper vans smaller than a Winnebago or tour bus. 😅
We totally can't blame him! Those are awesome vehicles and tiny vans aren't for everyone. You could have him try and parallel park a Winnebago, maybe then he will change his mind haha In all seriousness, you can't go wrong with whatever van/vehicle you choose, as long as it works for you! I have one of these vans as well and love it. we use it with 2 people (camping only, not living in it). I see how you can sleep, but driving must be tough for the 6'5 person because the front cabin is very small for long legs.
That is awesome! Mike actually prefers driving over being the passenger for that reason. He has more leg room on the driver's side than when he is the passenger, especially because the passenger seat can't lean back all the way because of the bench. Thank you for watching, we really appreciate it!

Nicely done. Like the L shape and extension. We have a Ram Promaster City mini camper and the front seats are adjusted by a PIA dial on the side of the seats. It’s ridiculous. Do you have a lithium setup? Subbed.

how do you like the front seats for long distance driving. Im looking at a 2011 Connect.
Hi- we really haven't noticed any issues! The seats can be adjusted pretty easily so both of us are able to have a comfortable driving experience. Hopefully you will get to test drive one so you can see if they will work for you too! Best of luck in your van search!
Instead of the cupboards where they are from the ground, would they not hang from the roof down which would potentially mean a bigger sleeping space underneath?
Absolutely! We have seen some other Transit Connect van builds who have done it that way. We have also seen some builds that just made the entire back of the van a bed and had storage underneath it with nothing hanging from the ceiling. We actually considered that type of build but then found ourselves gravitating to the layout we chose. We liked the idea of having a work space, couch, bed, etc. It's really all about preference :)

Haha yeah probably! We actually slept like that, with our heads by the doors on our first roadtrip and just found that we preferred to have our heads by the front seats more. For us it feels less claustrophobic/feels like you have more space by your face without being right up against the cabinet and wall. It ended up being more of a comfort thing than any real layout reason! But yes, that is totally doable if someone wanted to haha Thank you for watching, we really appreciate it!

I have been watching so many videos and wondered about taller people. For me I am 5’4” but my husband is 6’2”. He won’t be using the van as much as I am. But I want him to be comfortable

Hi! The distance from the floor to our ceiling is about 51 inches, but that doesn't include the floor board we installed or the few inches of lost space between our ceiling and the wood boards we hung up so the empty cargo space before the build would be slightly bigger. Are there door stoppers on side of van???
Hi- yes! There are door stoppers on the back lower sides of our van. This allows us to open the back doors 180 degrees and connect the doors to the side stoppers!

how big is your cabinet/desk setup? do ya'll have those dimensions anywhere?
Hi, we do not have the dimensions listed anywhere but we do have the link of the cabinet we purchased from Lowes with the dimensions of the cabinet: www.lowes.com/pd/Project-Source-30-in-W-x-30-in-H-x-12-in-D-Natural-Unfinished-Door-Wall-Stock-Cabinet/1003204652

How does it do down trailheads with such low ground clearance?
Hi- we have taken the van down some bumpy back roads and haven't had any issues! But we haven't gone down anything too extreme so we will have to watch for that if/when we do. So far though the ground clearance hasn't been an issue, even in the snow we get here in the Western New York area. Hope that helps! Thank you for watching, we really appreciate it!

The width is four feet, and the bed is three feet, so the “kitchen” is only a foot? It looks so much deeper. Wide angle lens illusion?
Haha It is a small space for sure but can be surprisingly roomy! The cabinet that we built everything off of from Lowe's is 30 inches wide by 30 inches tall and 12.75 inches deep.
In between the wheel housings on the floor, the van is 6ft by 4ft but the van curves out and we are able to get a little bit of extra space past the wheel well on the floor and with the curve of the van.
With the cabinet, we extended the side out a little bit to fit the curve of the van and around the wheel well so the cabinet is now a little bit wider that the original 12.75 inches. Hope this makes sense!

Yes, pretty much lol We like to compare it to being like a tent on wheels. It doesn't have a lot of amenities but gives us a way to get places and a place to sleep for the night which is all we can ask for in a van this size!

Micro van life may not be for you but there are plenty of larger vans that may be more to your liking! Don't give up on the dream just yet :)

I drive and sleep in small european hatchback because it gets 80 mpg avrenge (2.9l/100km) It's suitable for one person and less cost mean longer vacations ;)
