The Friction Zone point is so very important. When I had a smaller bike it wasn't that big a deal, but now that i have a bigger bike it makes a huge difference in stopping smoothly.
No doubt, total game changer. Makes the bike much more stable. I appreciate you watching and leaving your feedback!
Hi Joe. I would add that people need to make sure that their front wheel is straight when coming to a stop. Have the handlebars turned left or right is a sure-fire way to dump the bike.
💯 I was kicking myself while editing because I forgot to mention that. Can't win them all 🤣
Exactly the mistake I made about a week ago. I come from bicycles, so it doesn't matter where the bars are. My first time on a motorbike I tried stopping and had the bars turned, bike dropped and I felt stupid as.
Really great info. “Accelerating” giving more “throttle” seemed so weird to me but it’s the secret to smooth stops. Great video Joe.👍🏼
Thank you! Yes, accelerating was weird for me also! But after you try it, it's a game changer. I appreciate you watching and leaving your feedback!
This a good no-nonsense tutorial in mc insispensable basics. Please keep up the good work, Joe.
Thank you very much for the kind words. I appreciate you watching and leaving your feedback. More videos to come!
Been riding for 35 years and have never been told the proper way to stop... Thanx man! I will practice this technique 👌
*yes I subbed 😁
I'm glad I was able to help! I appreciate you watching and subscribing brother. Thank you!
Your sound quality and graphics are top notch!! Excellent work!!💯👍🏽
Even if we know all this, it’s all good reminders!!
Thank you
Appreciate the kind words! The audio was top notch until I got to the exercise. I accidentally had two tracks playing at the same time creating an echo. Creator problems 🤣
great instructions on staying upright joe... nice job my friend
Thanks brother! Definitely important. As always, appreciate you watching!
Using the friction zone when stopping is new to me, I'll give it a try when/if I get my Goldwing GL 1500. The only concern I have is how this will increase braking distance, and the additional wear it places on the clutch.
As far as the braking distance, this is for normal stops. If you’re making an emergency stop, you won’t be using this technique. But even then, you go back into the friction zone at the very end just to provide power to the rear wheel. You’re not really adding any distance.
For the additional wear, most bikes have a wet clutch and are designed to slip. I do a heck of a lot of slow speed practice and constantly slip the clutch and haven’t had any issues. Now if slip the clutch and have super high rpm’s all the time, then you will probably wear out the clutch much faster.
Yo Joe, I will be watching this video teaching over & over & over to get your tips down pat! Fantastic! 🏍️👍🎉😁🦅Doug
I appreciate that Doug! Thank you so much! Keep on practicing
Good points, thanks for posting.
@@johnschoonmaker-tm3ll no problem at all. Appreciate you watching!
Great video, thank you. I noticed you doing this anyway, but you didn’t mention in commentary that your left foot should go down just as the bike stops. Throwing your left foot out too early tends to push your body to the opposite side, thereby destabilising the bike and making a smooth stop in a straight line more difficult.
I get a real kick at a red light out of smoothly coming to a complete stop on my rear brake and then gently placing my left foot down with the bike dead straight upright. Especially beside a biker who has manhandled his or her bike to a stop with both brakes, and has wobbled to a stop with both feet down and handlebars askew!
@@josephlarmor550 yes exactly! You don’t want to anticipate the stop too early. I always try to get the smoothest stop possible. This is an exercise you can practice EVERY TIME you ride. Appreciate your feedback and thanks for watching!
Can you do one about going on gravel up down stopping and start?
Great idea! I will try to squeeze that in before winter hits. If not, I will for sure next year. Appreciate the feedback!
My friend on an emergency stop you apply both brakes and at the end slightly come off the rear brake to avoid rear wheel skid at the end. Try it and see the difference your newbie friend from Philly.
I've never heard that before, but it makes sense. I will definitely give it a try. You definitely want to avoid skidding. Thanks for watching and leaving your feedback!
@@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures both MSF and Total Control teach this beyond basic class.. Also you should push weight back or straighten arms to prevent doing a stoppie. Look up Lee Parks Total Control or MotoJitsu probably has it in one of his videos he was a Total Control Instructor for all levels. Not in basic because they typically don't have the muscle control and coordination yet. Just like other things like trail braking. Slow speed maneuvers knee down etc.
Great videos. Just moved up from a 500cc cruiser to a Heritage 114, these are great techniques.
Congrats on the upgrade, the heritage is a beautiful bike. Thanks for the kind words! Appreciate you watching.
i like the skateboarding reference. I use skiing personally, but ya always gotta be looking ahead. When you're looking at your front tire, (or the tips of your skis), you're in trouble.
Exactly 💯 Look where you want to go!
Great tips Joe. Thanks for sharing and ride safe. 👊✌️👍
Appreciate that brother. You ride safe as well!

Another good job Joe!
Appreciate it brother. I already know you know all of these!
Still hearing it over and over helps👍
Repetition creates retention!
This is a topic I've been struggling with especially since moving to a larger bike. Thanks for the video.
No problem at all, glad I could help. I appreciate you watching!
Thank you Joe.
No problem Joel! Appreciate you watching!
I use the front and back, but use the front mainly as I am stopping and use both feet. Yes, I can keep the bike up with one foot, however, when I have myself and a passenger, I use both feet as I come to a stop. Been doing it that way for 30+ years
I will put both feet down occasionally when I have my wife on the back, but I'll do it after I'm completely stopped. The main thing is that you need to make sure your bars are completely straight if you're using the front brake at slow speeds. If your bars are turned and hit that front brake, you will more than likely fall over. Appreciate you watching and leaving your feedback!
@@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures I usually have my wife on the back with me - or my 21 year old daughter -
If I'm alone - yeah, I"ll use my back break and one leg.
i sometimes lose concentration and use too much front brake especially when tired after a day out, or put both feet down (i see a lot of this from others as well) but like anything you have to work on it, & coming to a smooth effortless stop always feels great, and IMHO it's about ingraining it into the psyche. thanks for the tips
You’re exactly right. It took me about a week to force myself to use the rear brake and put one foot down. I had to continually think about what I was doing. But, now it’s second nature and it’s amazing how much smoother my stops are. Appreciate you watching!
Hi
Could you tell me what the windshield is and where I can get the same one
Just found out about your channel, nice work man
Thanks
@@marcio7272 thank you very much! Honestly it’s a windshield I found on Amazon. It’s a real pain in the butt to put together, but it works. Just look on Amazon, they’re all probably made by the same people with different branding. Just keep in mind you get what you pay for!
I've been using both brakes to stop for 14 years...never had a problem.
Must be a sportster!
Again, basic best practices 👍…I never teach “pulling the clutch” as it can imply engaging the arms and shoulders…I always teach “squeezing the clutch” as it keeps the movement at the fingers…ie smoother inputs
Completely agree. Everyone we do needs to be smooth!
I have had trouble with my stops getting sloppy lately. I finally realized I was looking down instead of straight ahead. Much better now. It was unnerving as my new bike is the most stable bike at really low speeds that I have ever owned.
Glad you figured it out. Always look where you want to go! Also, try stopping while you’re still in the friction zone. Your stop will be even more smoother. Appreciate you watching!
Excellent presentation; love the time frames for calling out details; love the sense of ownership as the actual rider/demonstrator. If only I could convince my bike to loose a couple hundred pounds…..the left leg would be forever grateful! Hm….guess that is the motivation for mastering slow riding practices. Thanks! 🎠
@@mattthomson3464 thank you! Not sure how I can help with helping your bike lose weight 😂 Get out there and practice! Appreciate you watching

Also helps to Rev-match when you downshift
Yes, I literally just learned how to do it in the Yamaha champ street course. Definitely tricky to get the hang of, but when you do it makes it much smoother!
We need to get you more subs man great content
I appreciate that. They will come over time. I’m content with helping everyone! Appreciate you watching!
Good to know, now I can take the training wheels off of my V-Max.😊
I use the clutch to slow down because I drive semis.
I realized that I have a huge problem with stopping
Hopefully these tips help you!
One more you should add and it's one that I think is the most important is to simply start braking sooner. Too many riders wait too long to start braking when coming to a stop. Don't try to deal with all that rolling weight at the last second. A long slow stop is always smooth.
Valid point! In addition, if you start braking earlier, the car behind you has more warning. Great tip.
Tbh, as someone who rides naked and sport bikes my preferred technique is to just use both brakes coming to a stop and just turn the handlebars a millimeter amounts to the right. That way the bike falls to the left, right on my left foot. Extremely useful for me because I cant flat foot both my feet so I want it to fall on the side Ima put my foot down.
I get what you’re saying, but it’s still not a good idea to turn your bars or use the front brake at slow speeds. If you end up in a situation where you need to stop suddenly, you’re going to resort to your habit (using the front brake) and most likely fall over.
@@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures Respect for replying to a comment on like an 8 month old video man 😅
I’ll reply to all of the comments! I don’t care how old the video is. The only comments I don’t reply to are the ones that don’t make sense or they are trolling. Sometimes I still reply to the trolls though 😂
I guess HD’s don’t have linked brakes using the front lever?
Anyway yes the rear brake only at low speeds.
They do, but they stop linking at about 10mph. Appreciate you watching!
Good job Joe! You will need your own advice when I whooping you in the slow race!
🤣🤣🤣 I think not sir!!!!

... Sounds like we might want to go back to learning rev matching.

USE YOUR BRAIN , LOOKING AHEAD ANTICIPATING A RED LIGHT COMING UP AND EASE SLOWING DOWN AHEAD OF TIME BOTH BREAKS
Thanks for watching and leaving your feedback
@0:28 how to apply brake
Put hand shift on your bike, you’ll be smooth as silk or look like a complete bonehead
Did you skip physics in school? If not, you need more immigrants to improve your school system.
I gotta say, you didn't look smooth at all
Well, you're entitled to your opinion. I wasn't wobbling all over the place. At slow speeds, you're never going to be absolutely perfect.
