@samsizil We invented the steam catapult you spanner And the mirror landing sight And the angled flight deck And the arrestor wire system Basically, everything that allows US Navy carriers to operate conventional fast jets came from the Royal Navy
Interesting that the US required two officers from the Fleet Air Arm to help set up Topgun.. They do not tell you that in the movies!!!! We do far more multi/tactical awareness right from the onset, rather than focusing so much on air hrs! should read about Sharky Ward... finest pilot of his generation.
@southbristolsfinest There has to be a reason for ejecting from an aircraft. Cant just do it willy-nilly when you feel like collecting a pension earlier. Why would you risk spinal injuries just to collect a pension?
physical fitness, co ordination, ability to multitask is probably one of the most important things if you want to become a fighter pilot. and having good vision.. The math and physics bit are a bit overrated as you're not expected to do these sick calculus calculations etc.. But, one should be able to do basic calculations when you navigate and such (if lets say your INS fails)
excuse me??? Erm who invented the jet engine????? Sir Frank Whittle - RAF Officer! Who had the first supersonic airliner? (Britain+France). Who invented the Harrier Jump Jet? Britain! Who has the most successful Air Display team on the face of the planet (RED ARROWS) who have won more awards than those so called american display team blue angels.........need I continue!
It isnt an aircraft dearie, it is an aeroplane. An aircraft is what a statesman does with a document to give it publicity. Neville Chamberlain, another pilot who weathered the storm...
jet engine was not invented by Frank Whittle... no way, please check again, hint: Romanian engineer... Henri Coanda. google it, wiki... Happy new year!!
5 yerars on I doubt you'll read this but I did read up further on Coanda... his claims are widely regarded as bullshit... Whittle and Von Ohain both developed turbojet engines based on completely different principles of operation independently of each other at more or less the same time

The first aircraft was made by Clement Adder or by the Wright Brothers or by Santos Dumont , it depends of the location

. . . and . . . we Brits even invented the Aircraft Carrier itself!
Not forgetting military aviation, on the Isle of Sheppey in 1909.

Indeed, he wrote a very interesting book: Sea Harrier Over the Falklands.
RIP Sharky…he passed away recently in Grenada where he had retired. Aged 80. What a man. Blue skies
Amazing how a British pilot can easily swap from RAF pilot Ground Attack Harrier to Royal Navy pilot Sea Harrier...
Curious, so i guess they don't practice ejecting?
13 years late but no

why dont you read the comment he was replying to. I think the attitude was warrented.
Didn't you read the comment I was replying to?
I think he is reffering to the turbojet engine design which is what is used in modern aircraft.

actually Hans von Ohain was the father of the first 'operational' jet engine
