Dad had a G17 back then I can remember my grandfather asking why he bought a plastic gun
Hahahahah Nice.
What did your grandfather have? An M1 Garand?
Back then they call that G17 "Combat Tupperware".
Yours Truly back then...plastic is kinda bad...it is not durable and even now they are. That’s why back then people did not trust plastic even high density polymers. Now the time had change, people use more and more polymer in their weapons to cut down some weight
They are cheaper to make than traditional steel or alloy framed pistols. I knew a guy who referred to them as Fisher-Price guns.
A legally armed man stopped a mass shooter in a church in Fort Worth, Texas today. Guys stay trained and ready and always carry.
Amen!
Wasn't a Catholic Church, or it could have ended up being a mass Mass shooting, or is it a Mass mass shooting? Good thing it didn't happen in Massachusetts, for there would not been an armed church member to stop the massacre.
cyanghost109 I doubt that you will because it would prove that we the people need our right to carry.
The shot that man pulled off to put down the shooter was very impressive given the circumstances.
I read that as "a legally blind man"

I remember the “big scare” over “plastic guns able to bypass metal detectors”.
@Fintan it was marketed to instill fear in the misinformed so that future restrictions would be easier to pass. "Nobody needs a gun that is undetectable by metal detectors!" "Nobody needs ghostguns"
that was Die Hard 2...2 years later...1990
Grevlain Yeah..remember Teflon-coated “cop killer” bullets? Lethal Weapon 3, if I recall. Then there was the Talon branded hollow point rounds that “spun like a saw” in a target. ATF got those banned.

I was born in 1988. . . . . I actually own variations of all of those.
To be specific, Smith& Wesson M&P15, Mossberg Shockwave, and a Glock 42. I also own many other things. Thanks for sharing, this was interesting to see.
In 1988 the Mini 14 was very common at the range. Didn’t see many AR’s then.
Yeah, they were quite expensive at the time. Now, I can't even imagine those days that are gone, and the prices now are so reasonable if you look for a bargain. Maybe not a Go To War Gun, but still good enough for most of us. I have a Del-Ton DT Sport with a pencil barrel that will do me just fine. Makes it lighter for these old tired muscles to carry. I sure loved my Mini 14 back in the day, and I think it only cost me about 250.
True. It would've been mini 14's and increasingly SKS's as the decade went on.
Good enough for the A-Team.

that's right, A2s were $1200 and no accessories
Purchased a Moss 500 stainless mariner in ‘88...

"Were you armed in 1988?" Actually, sort of. My grand dad made a flintlock rifle for me for my 1st birthday.
Cool...but you definitely don’t want to shoot it tho =))
Gate of hell Heaven bridge Indeed. I stick to my pistol and shotgun.
That's an awesome gift.
Early this time I would have bought every old Smith and colt I could afford... oh ya and m1 garand too, ar 15s. The list keeps going on, just like today.
I had an 870, my dads colt 1911 and a norinco AK 47 that I bought cheap. I was 18 and just graduated high school with no idea what life was about. Love your videos my friend, keep up the good work!
I’m still choosing the wood stocked shotgun! Love the classic look and feel of a nice wood stocked 12

Hickok, this was one of your BEST! You provided us all with some “gun nostalgia” and I like it...!

Memories...I got my Mossberg500 for my 12th birthday that year...28” vent rib and 24” slug barrel...well-weathered, used and I still love it scratches, dings and all....Thanks Hickok!
I was 18 and yes I had the model 500 shotgun.
It had a slightly longer vented rib barrel and that big knuckle on the end of barrel select-a-choke
1988 I was carrying my S&W model 19 snub. Bought used for $150 from a le turn in.
That a2 is beautiful,wow!!!

Great video Hickok! Was wondering if you might do an historical video on what you might have bought on December 8th, 1941 if you were living in Honolulu or the west coast.
In 1988 I was 21. I had a Mossberg 500, a Ruger GP100, an Auto Ordinance 1911, and a Ruger 10/22. I don't recall wanting a Glock at that time. I lusted over a Smith and Wesson semi-auto, and a Browning Hi Power. Oh, and I wanted a Remington 870 Wingmaster.
Loved that decade, foxy woman and great music. Bought my Mossberg 500 in 1981 and it still runs great.
I was fresh out of the oven in 1988, and I've always been pretty interested in what the world looked like when I was born. This was a really neat insight into what firearm culture could've been like when I was toddling; thank you, Hickok.
Born in '87, same thing. I have an odd fascination for the 40's-80's that won't quit. I own a 1911, but i'm more of a garand person than a M14.
Definitely Needs A TV Show @Hickok45!!! 👏🏼 Great Info, Great Knowledge, Great Suggestions & Tips, Hands Down The Best!!!
I carried a S&W model 19
One of my favorite 😍
Model 66. Funny that in the desert stainless was so much more common then blued guns
ftdefiance1 i was a poor rookie cop, and my local dealer happen to have a 19-5 in stock, so that’s what I went home with and carried until my department went to issued guns (S&W SVE worst gun I ever carried)
@@theinfidel6301 surprised they issued that. Budget issues no doubt.
ftdefiance1 exactly, we carried those junk pieces for about a year then swapped out to Glock 17s
I still have the S&W Model 39-2 Nickel finish with walnut grips my dad bought in 1981. The clerk said it was the last handgun sold by Montgomery Wards.
Me born in 86, watching this video "Oh god he knows me!" :D
Same
1988, Rem 870, S&W 59. Couldn't afford an AR so settled on a Marlin Camp 9 to fit the S&W 59 mags. Still have all three.
All I owned was a High Standard 9 shot 22 revolver for gophers, and a Coast to Coast Master Mag 12 gauge. My has the armory changed
I remember when Coast to Coast hardware sold gun's + ammo. But i was about 4 year's old. I had an H&R 9 shot .22 rev olver. + later a High Standard H.D. military. Semi Auto .22 lr.
I was 3 but my Dad had a S&W 459, a Remington 870 and Ruger Mini 14 in these categories along with quite a few other guns at the time.
My dad bought me my first firearm around that time, a Marlin bolt action 22. Still in my safe.
6 or 7 shot clip... My dad bought one, when he bought my glenfield + said you'll be sorry you picked that It will jam never has jammed!😁☺
@@frankatchison2519 7 shot. I bought a 10 shot one for it decades later. And it's never, ever jammed.
Well, my first weapon bought was... a compound bow. Yeah.
I live in France so firearms are not allowed except for hunters but they are limited to 22. Lr rifles or double barrel shotguns, not that much choice...
@@coleoshtamebaghe3606 Yeah, I love my mod 60 but that bolt action was accurate as hell. Both of our .22's had squirrel's on the grip+ oak leave's on the forestock. My Glenfield still is in as new condition, they dont take pride in workmanship any more. SQUIRREL ON YOUR STOCK???
Re
@@frankatchison2519 There's no squirrel, but the craftsmanship is unbelievable, considering the bluing and the checkering on the wood stock. It might have been different grades, who knows. My dad is notoriously cheap, so he wouldn't have paid for anything extra.
In 1988, I had a S&W model 19 and a BHP, the Mossberg 500, and a mini 14 in a choate side folder.
I was 22 and owned a Krag carbine. I have a different one now but it's still my favorite.
Al Swann same age :) i had a 22 winchester pump action rifle my dad taught me to shoot... i miss those days.
I had one firearm back then: a vintage M-1 Carbine made in 1944 that had apparently spent the previous 44 years in an armory. I still have it to this day, and the only wear on it is what I've put on it over the years. If I could go back, I'd buy a barrel of SKSs for $60 apiece. Oh well.
I wonder what we should be buying now that will look absurdly cheap 30 years from now? Come to think of it, how one answers that question would make a great video. Happy New Year!
I remember that year. 4 yrs out of the Corps.
I turned 18 in late July in 1988 and very shortly after my birthday I bought my first gun. It was a Marlin bolt action 22lr. I have no idea what model, but it fed from a detachable 7 round magazine and came with a Tasco scope already mounted. I put thousands of rounds through that rifle before I used it as part of a trade shortly after my 21st birthday on a Smith & Wesson 645. Wish I still had both of those guns these days. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
Happy New Year gun owners!

You should do an “Armed in 2003” Video. Just because it was at the height of the 94 Ban and .40 was the king as far as handguns go. It was a much different gun world back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Glock Gen 3’s were fresh on the market and introduced the finger grooves, and at the time had yet to have any real deal competition in the striker fired market

I was born in '87, and those on the table are pretty much my first firearms.
What would I choose?
- S&W 686 .357 Magnum ( with boot grips) This was introduced in 1981.
- Armalite AR-10 in .308
- Instead of a shotgun I'll choose the Marlin Model 70P Papoose in .22LR. Which was introduced in 1986. Fairly new at the time.
