The Leagues of Votann are a prominent Squat civilization based around the Galactic Core. For thousands of years, they have exploited the riches of the core and overcome the dangers of the perilous region. Over these many millennia they have battled many of the galaxy's races, while just as frequently trading or acting as mercenaries.
The Votann are a rugged survivalist culture, having derived their society from the dangerous merchant-fleets of the Dark Age of Technology. They find strength and unity in the endless quest to acquire the resources they need to endure. While many judge them as selfish hoarders, they see these actions as necessary to ensure the survival of their race. Few other races can match the cloned Kin of the Leagues of Votann in the resilience of mind, body, and spirit.

I was really hoping Bricky was lying his @$$ off and you just going to play "Diggy Diggy Hole"
Not sure if anyone would care to know but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Ireland's Call is a song that is only sang when the Irish Rugby team plays by the team and all the fans, almost like a national anthem. It's akin to the Haka performed by New Zealand. Let alone is it specifically irish, its also specifically for rugby. Always thought it was kinda class
Thank you
♥
I was just typing if there was somewhere to get that lovely song separately
Lmfao I'm fucking dying here with D.K. Just completely missing the word Kin and Votann throughout the song and Bricky's reaction of: READ MOTHERFUCKER READ!
D.K.'s the type of person that forgets what they talked about by the end of the episode
In fairness, I was swept away by the beauty of the song to the point that I had trouble paying attention to the details and analysing the meaning as I listened. That was _amazing._
@@TheHerrDoctorhe forgets while they’re still talking about it lol
The votaan computer feels a lot like the giant supercomputer from hitchhikers guide.
Kin: what is the answer to life, the universe, and everything
Votaan: lemme think on that.
100 years passes
K: what is your answer?
V: 42
Well, to be fair, it's a very non-specific question. If you wanna know what the answer MEANS, you gotta understand the context of the question it answers. :P
Or, as my dad says, ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.
@@Stolanis Unfortunately, if you know both the question and the answer, the universe restarts and becomes even more incomprehensible.

I believe in the book it's mentioned that even though kin are cloned for certain purposes, they're not constrained to only that purpose.
They can get promotions or a change in occupation because if a kin designated as a chef is actually a really good engineer, it would be a waste not to have him do what he's better at
Theyre a meritocracy really. It makes sense
I adore the Leagues. They’re just dwarf enough to feel like dwarves but also such a unique take on dwarves that there’s nothing really like it
IT guy shows up, plugs in a big flash drive to the Votann, copies over 10 millennia of Squats, and clears the hard drive.
That's a grudgin'.

As an envoy of the eldar community, I offer Gav Thorpe to the Votan community as an act of good faith and fellowship.
May you find in him what we could not, fullfilment, validation and respect
the most Eldar ish to say. 10/10
That's alot to hope for from a guy that fetishized and transplanted Tolkein's "dying old race" trope from the elves onto the Eldar and assume he won't do the same to basically dwarves in space.
I feel kinda bad for saying this because the man himself is lovely, but I'm glad he's no longer the eldar guy. Now, we only need to get at least one book in the next decade
From what I understand, he did a lot of dwarf lore for fantasy, so it's actually in decent hands.
This was the first book of his I read and my impression is that his far better at world building than storytelling.
@muriomoira he is just THAT MUCH of a dwarf fan. All of his dwarf books for fantasy are good and this book is good too. But being a beard-chad dwarf-maxxer means that he deliberately writes elves poorly (as it should be)
TLDR; cope and seethe knife ear
The sentient nebula was a recurring Star Trek encounter. Sometimes it was a character in its own right. Think of the vampiric fog from the death world episode, but in space.
Crazy to hear this take on “Ireland’s Call”. Very freaking cool
1:13 "There is no malady, m'lord. You've simply gotten old!"
The coolest way I imagine votan in my head. Is that they're like space marines but way more personable and human. I like to think that interactions between the two would be like the kin cracking jokes having fun partying with their robot friends while the Space marines are just super stern and stoic. And when they ask about the robot dudes. The kin are like ''Jimmy got really messed up last fight and now he's in this special little dreadnought of ours. Since we're just little guys yknow''. And the marines would respond with ''I see. Serve well brother Jimmy''
They're the men of Stone and iron
IF YOU DON'T ROCK AND STONE, YOU AIN'T COMING HOME
We beat england too❤
Votan: "We will use you to fuel the growth of our next generation"
Tyranids: "....wait a minute"
The episode where bricky finally has an embolism at the start.
I love the irelands call, but its votann haha
I'm Irish and hearing this was SOO hype. Amhrain na bFiann go dteo!
As an englishman and rugby fan, I did not expect to hear remixed irelands call on adepts ridiculous, had to double check the video
Happy to have an udpate on these fellas, even if this feels like a lot of clarifying on details we already had. Props to the singer and the ghost writer for their work here.
FOR ROCK AND STONE!
34:12 Yup, even the name "Votann" ia juat a reference to Woutan/Woden/etc which is the name of Odin in non-Norse Germanic mythologies. Meaning the daction's name is literally "Leagues of Odin"
Woutan/Woden/etc is also the reason why the day of Odin is called "Wednesday" in English but "Onsdag" in all 3 Scandinavian languages.
Just wanted to comment on this, but I thought I'd better search the comments, as someone else surely got that not-too-subtle reference.
I also highly recommend reading “One Million Years” by Nate Crowley (author of the Twice Dead King novels). Necrons versus Leagues of Votann short story from the Necrons perspective; no spoilers, but the conversation between the necron and the Kin is one of my favorite depictions of the Kin and their personality!
The Kyn are the Men of Stone, the Iron Kyn are the Men of Iron and the Emperor and Perpetuals/by extension Custodes are the Men of Gold. The art of the Kyn's ships is cylindrical just like humanities early onyl colony ships as shown in Flight of the Eisenstein.
12:45 furthermore the Emperor is the All-Father as refered to by Russ, Votaan, Wotaan, Wodin, Odin, where we get Wednesday from. The new Battlefield Trophies box and bare heads in general show bony stone like growths on some of their skulls.
A note on Gav Thorp, he's been writing 40k stuff for decades, not as a novelist but as one of GWs staff writers that works on codexes and campaign books, if you've read through a codex or an imperial armor book or another campaign book you've read Gav's stuff as lore blurbs and explanations.
"how do you do fellow humans" said the computer projecting a image of a votan
The song gave me the shivers. Beautiful.
Hearing about the crucible and how the votann/kin interact with it gave me an idea. If the votann clone people, make their gear and take in the memories of the dead, whats stopping them from recreating important ancestors again with some form of their memories?
You could see a group of occasionally partially reincarnated ancestors of importance reborn in times of need. Likely with fragmented memories but an inkling of their past lives and their purpose.
"How'd you get that black stone fortress" Imperium
"Found it" the Kin
On the subject of "Is this faction TRULY Grimdark", I have one simple test:
If you would be a Villain of the Week in Star Trek The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine, you are already Grimdark enough in general.
I typically listen to this in 1.75 speed. I had to drop it down so I could cry in Irish for this. Thank you.
The High Kahl's Oath is a great "dipping toes" book for The Leagues of Votann, it does what it needs to do by expressing what the core of the faction is.
funny note. Gav Thorpe is known for how terrible his eldar books are but how great his dwarf books are, so they give him a space dwarf book.. and hey there WAS an eldar mention
as a skull cup for the protagonist... goddamnit Thorpe. XD
Ok. We getting close boys but its Gotrek Gurnisson and Herr Felix Jaeger i wanna hear about
One of my favorite details about the weighing of decisions is the fact that some kindreds do it for basically every decisions where as others have literally never seen their weights before.
Gav Thorpe is the guy you get to write space marines or hope he likes your faction if it isn't marines.
I heard "Skeins" and now I'm just imagining little vials of DNA blueprint strands wrapped up like a skein of yarn.
1:19:12 fan fact Tokien originally named the Noldor (one of the three Eldar 'kingdoms') the gnomes , but he changed it because of the affiliations
That’s going in the book, Umgi!
Didn't expect a take on Ireland's call (the national anthem used by combined Northern and Republic of Ireland sports teams)
That opening song has inspired me to start a whole army, god dammit.
Having the song sung was pretty neat, though if we could get some lunatics to sing it in a pub and make it sound really dwarfen.... I'm just saying I'd pay for that
1. Give a link to listen that song on repeat, please
2. After that quote, i am hyped to build my few remaining kyn models
Yes, absolutly, fucking PLEASE.
It is inexcusable that this wasn't included by default.
Did I hear a Rock and Stone?
Mushroom!
@thorn7764 Mushroom!
I would like to congratulate bricky on the self restraint shown to dk on musical perception.
I'd have had a maimed cohost after that in his shoes.
They refer to the black stone fortress as the MOTHERLOAD that made me laugh out loud while reading that dof novel

skein
/skān/
noun
noun: skein; plural noun: skeins
- a length of thread or yarn, loosely coiled and knotted.
- a tangled or complicated arrangement, state, or situation.
"the skeins of her long hair"
Also ties in to the Norse-ish influence of the Votann, with the Norns sometimes being described as weavers of fate
I'm probably showing my age by Gav Thorpe being "the guy with the ponytail, in all the White Dwarfs"
Yup, definitely showing age...
you and me both, kin, you and me both.
Ireland's call but Votann makes me wanna play then even more
[Insert Rock & Stone here]
I love that the Kin basically Tyranid-izes the Tyranids. Very great.
The grimnyr in the leagues is a nod to one of Odins names in the norse poem Grimnirsmal
I can see the kin trying to scrap a blackstone fortress. If they don't know how it works, it can't be worked into their supply lines!
Just imagining the Home Depot theme while the Hearthkyn disassemble a Tyranid bioship like a crab
You’re also 30 my guy. Sickness and injury only get more lengthy from here.
I WANT SPACE GOTREK
Rock and Song
Love to see some Votann content ! there is also a bunch of random excerpt about the leagues spread out everywhere. There is a story of the Leagues fighting the Chaos Space marines. Also another one in the SM codex where the leagues fight the imperial fist. Both showing are really impressive for the Dwarfs
The Expert writer went jojo on him " Bricky your next line is..."
I love that their robot buddies wear clothes.
A skein is a bundle of thread or yarn, and since DNA is a thread structure, therefore you have genetic skeins.
No Bricky. You are getting older. It’s happening embrace it or fall like Horus 😂
Votann have lore!
Yeah Irish watching live, that song 😂😂
When Vashtorr came out I had originally speculated that we could get Chaos Dwarves because he’d be able to take control of the AI and especially the very compromised old Votann, or at least speak through the votann to the kyn in a way that manipulates them into doing his bidding and empowering him. It was a total layup for GW to do in the lore, I’m glad they didn’t miss out on it with that little bit of the Ironkyn getting corrupted
As someone wrote on another video :
V.O.T.A.N.N. - Voices Of The Ancestral Neural Network
That's my headcanon
edit: BTW defrag.exe is a thing. Just sayin
Finding out that the kin are basically human McNuggets is pretty eye opening
not gonna lie, when you were hyping up the song, i expected to get blasted with a rendition of "Diggy Diggy Hole"
KIN OF THE MINE REJOICE!
LoV are on track to become the replacement for firstborn marines. Primaris can return to a legion structure and branch out in flavour while LoV are just simple and fun.
God, I love the squats. I’m so glad they’re getting updates. Thank you for telling us.
As to why the Kin might call elves Gnomes, that is probably from the Silmarillion, where Tolkien calls them that on occasion, as translated from Greek where it means "The Wise Ones", or smth roundabout that.
Hearing the dwarves discuss the "holy pigeon" is so funny i need more bits like that 🤣
This episode is super timely, as I just finished The High Kâhl’s Oath last week.
same here
Was it any good?
@@j.k.prufrock5605 I enjoyed it. They were kind of right about it being more lore focused than character focused but there were some really good character moments in it. Fun book, nothing too heavy.
It's a good book! I think it was a good first entry for the faction, explained enough stuff, left enough stuff hanging, and gave us some characters we could get a little invested in.
You could say “it’s just a LITTLE lore”
Oh hey it’s the short stack space marines
Ah, the perfect 40k faction to learn more about as a break from listening to Vulture Capitalism by Grace Blakeley. I'm sure these things I'm learning about totally aren't related at all to current events. Yup. No sirree.
Name a more ambitious crossover, blimey
More Votann lore? Got me interested
The song is just a Votann version of Irelands call
They *say that in the video*. Just watch before commenting nonsense like this.
I believe a skein is usually referring to fabric and it's like a roll of the material.
Random cover (with different lyrics) of Ireland's call on adeptus ridiculous was not on my bingo card for this year.
We’ve got more Kin! Let’s go!
Can you guys release just the song as a separate video clip or link the singer’s RUclips if they have it? That was so beautifully done.
Sweet jesus the song you played HURT......why did they add the tin effect? Her voice is beautiful but reverb of her high notes with that effect on is wild! strolled into my ear and set my tenitus dial to 11
My immediate thought on hearing sentient nebula was "hello khatan"
Like that is effectively how they were described in their pre-necron scamming forms.
Looking forward to the day of chaos votann. The Brokyn
I am disappointed DK failed to connect urd-0r, verd-4n, and sk-43l with Urd, Skuld and Verthandi from "Ah ! My Goddess !".
First hour of work just became best hour of work.
Can't get over the fact that these guys essentially left a tyranid bioship on cinderblocks after they stole the rims. Can't have shit in the galactic core, man
Bricky and DK are in my walls, I just finished High Kâhls Oath yesterday
Lutar is best character btw
Absolutely
"Yes it's Votann, I'm upset now"

Having also learned the entirety of Elden rings lore, I get so hardwired hearing The Crucible after knowing everything and the cruelty that they’ve been treated as defects of the golden order.
I was fucking convinced the song was going to be Windrose
Just a little AI guy with a big coat and gun
The sentient nebula specifically bring to mind the Ctan before the necrontyr bound them to necrodermis. Is that just me? I do wonder if that is in fact the case-perhaps the ctan we know were orphaned and adrift far from their home, huddled around the only star in the area that could feed them. Perhaps they blamed the old ones for not preventing them from being set adrift and doomed to a slow starvation in a similar manner to how the old ones refused to assist the necrons, or perhaps the old ones set them adrift intentionally for some unknowable reason. This also brings the possibility up of new Ctan being created by binding these beings into physical bodies, which would be one hell of a way for the necron story to advance and bring them into conflict with the kin-perhaps the necrons creat and bind new physical gods, perhaps with multiple factions splintering as the civil war between the silent king and the stormlord kicking into a higher gear as they each forge their own new star gods.
High Kahl's Oath was fun, so much culture and felt so different from other 40K books.
