I’ve done the surgery and it works! This is one reason that growing squash over an arch isn’t always such a great idea. At least if it rooted along the ground, you have a chance.
Hey Dave!👋Great post. 👍 I have found another way to fight the vine borer. Two seasons ago I was watching a UK gardener showing us his fruit cage. I figured I could do the same for zucchini plants. I've had great success so far.😃 I grow in pots and totes. I use the cage for other plants too...such as collards and kales. My hubby made it from PVC pipes. I ordered insects netting to put over the frame. I made a door by attaching a piece of tulle fabric. I hand pollinate. 🐝 And it's super easy to move around.
Here I am, I have had problems in the past also and I have started putting 7 dust around the base and it works for me. Remember to looks for the eggs under the leaf and rub the eggs to get rid of the eggs and future problems
Unfortunately that isn't good for pollinators. It will kill any insect that runs across it, non-selective. The eggs you are referring to are for squash bugs which are different than the vine borer. Two different problems.

Sounds like a great idea, just have to remember to do the pollinating! I would probably forget and still end up with nothing. 😉

I sprayed mine with a bit of diluted Neem oil. That worked well on the ones that were not already destroyed. They are looking a bit better now

I use planted pots. Can I still use my soil fron the pot to replant them?
