Good evening.
A few answers, Pads.... no not really. The Caps are for ear protections, and the standard uniform is Shorts, Shirt socks, boots and gum shield.
Players 15 on each side, 6 Subs a game, once you are out you don't come back in.
Halfs are 40 Min 5-10 in halftime.
You can retain possession as long as you don't turn the ball over.
To tackle you need to hit the ball carrier below the shoulders and make an attempt to wrap your arms around the ball carriers.
When tackled the ball carrier must release the ball and the tackler must release the ball carrier. The ball is live as long as it is inbounds on the field and not trapped in a pile.

You could have added that any protective gear (ie pads or headgear) is banned if it would cause injury to another player during the normal play of a game, so it must be soft padding.
also headgear disperses impact to potentially avoid concussions but other than that perfect brother
1. They train hard to build muscle to handle hits (their muscle mass = padding)
2. They train hard to handle being tackled and falling with minimal injury (judo, dance etc) - you will almost always seem them get straight up after a lot of those hits
3. There are strict rules about where they are permitted to tackle
Most injuries are from mistakes, and aren't as common as this video gives the impression - you probably saw about 10 yrs of hard hits in this.
PS. you can be banned for life for clothes line tackles, and serious penalties, fines and banning from games for weeks to months for any tackling/hits above the shoulders (not the tackler's fault if the one with the ball ducks) - there are MANY Rules of Rugby videos on RUclips
Padding under their jerseys would be far to restricting - if you saw any "padding" under jerseys, it would have been bandages/strapping

I talked football with a guy in South Africa. I asked what the rest of the world thought of American football. He said it looks liked robots running into each other on a field. You didn't see the humans, and it didn't appear they could get hurt, and so it wasn't hardcore, as Americans sell it. It's hard to argue against vs rugby.

@@cshubs never, only 2 fingers. They train us from a young age how to tackle with lots of force, wrapping the player and techniques to put them down safely on the ground after you blasted the wind out of their stomach.
I love this game. I only gave up playing at the age of 45, a year after suffering a spinal concussion. 36 hours paralysed until the swelling went down. After that I became aware I was not healing properly from one week to the next.

Congrats young Mr 4 times winner, awesome final, but it was always going to be with these 2 teams. In my 62 years of watching and supporting our ABs of NZ… there was never a harder battle fought between teams, than the ‘Springboks’ and the ‘ABs’..but I have to here, respectfully add our brothers the Wallabies, as through the 70s, 80s, & 90s they too were a very formidable team.

When I played we didn't have any type of pads, I did tape my ears so they weren't torn off! had my lower front teeth knocked out and a guy get his ear torn off in the same game, miss playing! loved playing sevens!, that's a fast playing running game!

Rugby League is the closest to NFL as they have a limit of five tackles or five downs before they have to kick the football. This is Rugby Union where they play phases. They hold onto the ball until they lose control of the ball, the ball goes out of play or there is an indiscretion in play. Both Rugby Union and Rugby League don’t wear pads.

Asia, BJ… We have 2 rugby codes… League & Union. I’m more of a League fan & to answer Asia’s question… YES… Girls DO play the league & many of them can be very physical with their tackling & hits. I grew up playing rugby league from age 6 until I was 19 & was hoping to trial for a pro contract but things went against me & I never got the chance. We DON’T wear padding (unless you wear a mouth guard) & the big hits send the fans insane, especially if it’s turning into a boring game. One big hit & it’s a different ball game altogether 👊😜👍
Our kids do this in P.E at secondary school from aged 11 in England, probably the rest of the UK too, my son loved it. It's a great sport. Did you know in 1823 Rugby was created by William Webb Ellis who picked up the ball and ran with it in his arms during a football game (soccer you'd call it) at a school in England.

In a few weeks our National Rigby League season kicks off and two opening round matches are going to be played in Vegas., Rugby League is a similar game to Rugby Union - but I think you would like to perhaps watch the games if they televise it there..... No pads, no helmets - just full on contact for 80 minutes

They don't wear padding in Rugby. They wear a sports vest with a tag at the back that measures their performance
There's two types of Rugby: Rugby Union, and Rugby League.
The former is often refered to as just "Rugby".
The latter is often refered to as just "League".
Rugby was codified in the early 1870s, and Rugby League evolved from a schism in the 1890s over amateurism vs professionalism and class cultural differences between Englands industrial North, and more well to do South.
Both Rugbys may look the same to the uninitiated but they have key differences that make code switching very challenging for both, though it does happen.
It's been said that Rugby Union is akin to Chess, while Rugby League is akin to Checkers.
League is much easier to pick up, and has a 6 tackle possession game not too different from the 4 Downs in American football.
League is the more TV friendly game. Its faster and more physical than union. Yet to many, its too "bash and crash", predictable, thus dull.
Rugby Union is said to be more cerebral. It's rule (or law) book is byzantine. All too often no one watching on tv, in the stadium, coaches, even the players know whats happened, but the Referee (and they don't even know half the time).
Union does seem to have more depth to how its played and can appear more "open". When a game of union is flowing, its a beautiful thing. When tactical gamesmanship from the forwards kicks in, such as massive time wasting reseting scrums. Depending on the viewer its either "an attritional game for the purists" or why people switch off and/or switch to Rugby League.
In the end they both offer things the other can't. Yet both can be frustrating, and often feel somethings lacking. No one has created an acceptable hybrid of the two to date.
As it stands, if i were a neutral, i'd watch a bad game of League any day over a bad game of Union.
While i'd watch a great game of Union over a great game of League
Women's rugby can be just as brutal.

I played rugby and these are my injuries
Both ankles badly torn ligament’s, 2 discolated shoulders of which one had to be put together again, dislocated jaw, broken nose x2, dislocated neck bone, 3 broken ribs, dislocated knee cap, and a finger nearly bit off. Best game in the world by far.

Never played with padding and from age 11 to age 45 only knocked unconscious once! (knee to my head in the scrum should have had a penalty at least but I cant remember). 15 players on each team and I played number 8 most of my career in amateur rugby.
It's interesting, by wearing no helmets, I bet there are actually less head and neck injuries, because these guys know how to tackle without leading with their head and neck.
CTE brain injury is unfortunately a reality for all collision sports. Some deceased Rugby Union, Rugby League, and Australian Football players have been found to have it, just like some deceased American Football players have (I don't know about Canadian Footballers)
NZ All Black Sir Wayne "Buck" Shelford will always a rugby football legend for the 1986 injury he sustained in a match against France, while still an amateur player (no sponsorship or endorsements) 20mins into the match he was involved in a very aggressive maul where he lost 4 teeth and a french players boot tore open his scrotum leaving his testicle exposed. He calmly left the field, asked the team doc to stitch him up and he went back on the field to play. Now that's hard core 🤘🤘

My wife played Rugby (Rugby Football as it's full name) in her youth. She talked about the 'suicide/hospital pass', which is where you passed to a team mate knowing they would get mullered. Apparently, this was a good incentive to not piss off your team mates. 🤣

No metrics headaches shits and forever pauses before action for 15 seconds and players posing forever for cameras. That’s the real shit, you know why you are on the field.
1- you can give the ball to a partner behind you not in front.
2- you can only kick the ball forward.
3- you can't block or tackle a player who doesn't have the ball.
4- there is no 1,2,3,4 down, the team keep playing till they touch the end zone with the ball.
5- tackle contact with face or neck are forbidden.
My SIL plays rugby and has for over 15 years. The day I met him my daughter took me to a rugby game he was playing in. When she pointed him out to me he was coming off the field with four fingers on his right hand bent backwards to his wrist. The team always has a medic traveling with them. The medic taped his fingers up and he was back out playing a few minutes later. That's when I knew he'd fit into our Canadian hockey family! He could take the body slams and keep going. He's a wonderful husband and father, and I'm glad he's married to my girl. Both my granddaughters play rugby. They started at 4 years old and are now 9 and 7. They love it.

The thing about American Football and Rugby Football they both have very similar roots, that is why a Touchdown is called a Touchdown cause it used to be to score you needed to touch the ball to the ground in the end zone just like in Rugby, that rule was changed in American Football but not in Rugby.
Rugby league fans will remember just how nasty this game can get if I mention 2 names of players who were paralysed in games… John Farragher (back in the 70’s) & of course, more recently, Alex McKinnon. One rule was brought in awhile back. Clothes lining was banned as so many players suffered severe neck injuries.

Haha, We played this game in Highschool, to blow of steam with all the bad boys, on an old soccer field. Our gym teatcher liked us, but we were "unmanageble loaded guns". So there was always a wheelbarrel to carry off the wounded 😁. We loved it. Treu story.

The pads you seen are fitness monitors, they show how much a player has run and his minimum and maximum heart rates. Some players wear head gear to protect the ears.

I’m English 🏴 and we don’t wear any padding in rugby , the only thing people wear sometimes is a slightly padded skull cap to stop your ears getting ripped off .

You should check out videos of Jonah lomu playing rugby. One of New Zealand's best ever players. He's passed away now but he was truly spectacular to watch. And yea no resting. The run for 40 mins straight doing that rest for 10 mins half time then another intense 40 mins. GO ALL BLACKS
Our kids play this sport from the age of 7 here in South Africa, New Zeeland, Australia
They do have teeth guards.. lol.. no pads.. when they rest, at half time... these guys are incredibly fit and used to being hit like this.. they do this every weekend and even during practice in the week..
The neck and head high tackles are outlawed now .. chest , waist amd legs is where you tackle only
You either have to be fast or heavy. Wingers are generally light and speedy. Centre half is the quarterback. Every now and then you get a good combo player who can rip through a team.
First training session for ladies rugby union....within 20 minutes off to hospital with broken arm . Jesson learned ...I am meant to be a spectator ! What a great game !

Hi you 2, its one of the best sports, my favourite competition is the six nations which started last week between (Scotland, Irland, Wales, France, and England) basic rules is they can't pass the ball forward but can kick it forward. They some times wear a protective cap and obviously a cup but other than that there is no padding, thanks for the reactions

As long as ball is passed backwards the ball remains in play (simplified version).
Their tops and shorts are made of very tough textile material. If they get ripped you know how strong those pull and hrab and hits are.

2 of my nieces play womens Rugby league and they go pretty hard. I played Rugby League from age 7 to 27. The only injuries I had was broken collarbone when I was 9. Torn ligaments at 13. Broken nose at 18 (kept playing with that one). Broken arm at 20. BTW check out the Rugby Hits Till I Collapse video. It is dam brutal that one.

I live in Wales where rugby is a religion, we all played it, my 8 year old nephew plays every week. It’s so funny watching you guys finding rugby so weird. Here in the UK we play this as school kids on up. Yes there is female rugby Asia, I’m sure you can play 😊 the ball (or play) stops when it goes out of touch or there’s a scrum or penalty. I played alot of rugby its really brutal on the body. i have massive respect to those who still play in their thirties
There are no downs like in the NFL where play is stopped and restarted with a scrimmage, but rather rucks that are kind of like a mini-scrimmage when a player is tackled (who has to release the ball) and players attempt to push each other over the ball to gain or secure possession. Play is not stopped unless an infringement occurs and the ref blows their whistle to award a penalty, free kick or a scrum.
The referee has the discretion to keep play going after an infringement occurs if the team who didn't commit it has possession and benefits from play carrying on. This is called "advantage" and play can be stopped and restarted by the ref for the initial infringement if no advantage was gained.

Absolutely no pads here!. No downs (ok, something similar in Rugby League), or stopping, no boring interruptions everey10 seconds for another beer commercial. Rugby has - like many other good sports like football (i mean real Football), Handball, Basketball and so on - a flow and a constant tension like the game is permanently 30 seconds away from scoring.

Went to watch my soccer team Glasgow City FC play something like a decade ago now (my lassies won their game btw) and a couple of playing fields away a Rugby team from Edinburgh Uni were playing. It was a very rainy and muddy Sunday afternoon. One of the Edinburgh players was chatting to her family, I think, and she was caked in mud from head to foot almost and she sounded like she'd had the greatest Sunday ever! That was Union; there's some footage out there of the Papua New Guinea's winning score from when their women's Rugby League side beat England for the very first time; the magic of that moment is incredible to experience. kerk ps, You really should react to Clint Eastwood's movie Invictus; it's based around Rugby Union and the relationship between Nelson Mandela and the South African Rugby Union team's Captain, Francois Pienaar. It's a wonderful, and I can remember watching the game at the end of the movie live; not far short of thirty years ago now.
