    That is rare, having an ambulance waiting at the LC and the signaller has to raise it. Very nice video!

    But do you know what the beautiful thing is? that the ambulance, given that it was on duty with someone on the stretcher at the level crossing, lifted it and let it pass!! beautiful video congratulations 🥰😊

    Great video! Guess that's the advantage of those old MCB crossings. Love how the ambulance used their siren to beep a "thank you" at the signaller.

    Credit to the signaller for being able to react so quickly so that the Ambulance could get to where it needed to be as soon as possible. Kinda reminds me what I managed to catch at Reigate level crossing at around the same time this was filmed, though on that occasion, the sequence was stopped and the lowering retractef just as the barriers were starting to lower.
    Great video by the way! 😁

      Thanks 😁 It was a good decision to raise the crossing as this could’ve been a serious emergency. By the time the ambulance was probably seen it was easier to fully lower the crossing and raise it again.

      I believe that's often the case: if the barriers are halted mid-travel, the operator has to keep the button pressed to re-raise, but if allowed to go fully down only a one-touch of the 'raise' button is needed.

    Amazing video! Perfect timing too!
    Credit to the Signalman reacting in the way he did! Most crossings when they see an ambulance, they let the train have priority when the ambulance is more important as it could be responding to an emergency that could be someone's life in danger.

      Ah yeah, that's quite a busy crossing. Sometimes once the crossing has been cleared, signallers do not check the CCTV so they may not know an ambulance is waiting.

    • @ChangesOneTim

      Unless the signaller or crossing keeper becomes aware of a blue-lighter at, or very shortly after, the start of the closure procedure, a safety feature enforces a time-out before the barriers can be raised again. This feature is to ensure that, if any railway signal protecting the crossing has to be put back to red after showing green, sufficient time is allowed for the train to either stop short or pass over before reopening to road traffic. Because of this, in all but a few instances delay to the blue-lighter is shorter by giving priority to the train(s).

    The same thing happened when I was at Maxey L/C. My dad was walking across the crossing and the signaller activated it. The signaller then switched it off and when the crossing was clear it switched on again.

    Spectacular timing! Thankfully the crossing is manned because if it wasn't then I don't think it would have been possible, for the ambulance to have been able to cross but in contrast however, I'm guessing there just wasn't enough spare time for a 2nd cancellation to enable the police car through?

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 года назад +3

      Yeah, the signaller was able to raise the crossing again for the ambulance, but the crossing had been cleared for the train to proceed before the police car arrived. At this point the train would have to pass before barriers are raised again.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  2 года назад +1

      The crossings aren't always automatically raised, it's usually just as they are lowered and if a signaller is aware of any vehicles approaching either looking from the sigbal box or via CCTV cameras.

      No fûcking way! AHB crossings doesn't have signaller controlling it. Is 100% automatic,but before train comes he can get through wrong way (isn't closed fully so a stranded car can quickly get out of crossing)

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 года назад +2

      No there isn’t as automatic crossings are not monitored by signallers. However, automatic crossings are usually lowered for no longer than one minute in comparison to manned full barrier ones which can be at least 2+ minutes.

    A little illegal.

    • @greengiant9706
      @greengiant9706 2 года назад +3

      It’s not illegal. If you notice the traffic lights (crossing signal lights), they briefly switch off as the ambulance passes in to the crossing once the barriers raise. At this point it’s up to the signalman and ambulance crews to take a calculated risk as to whether or not they pass but it isn’t illegal as no red light is illuminated at the point the ambulance crosses the white line. It’s only as the ambulance has already crossed over the white line and has entered the crossing, and is just about to clear the crossing, that the signalman activates the barriers and alarm and the red lights illuminate.
      In any case, if there were no barriers, any emergency service vehicle in the uk can lawfully cross red lights If they are en route to an emergency as long as it doesn’t endanger anyone. Considering there’s at least one and a half minutes between the ambulance having left the crossing and the train even becoming visible from the crossing, I think any police officer or court in this country would deem there to be no risk to anyone involved in the ambulance crossing when it did.
      Emergency vehicles travelling with emergency lights(and/or sirens) basically are allowed to treat red traffic lights as “Give Way” signs
      Edit for typos

      @@greengiant9706: I was under the impression that the purpose of the flashing red lights (at least at level crossings) was to indicate that unlike "standard" lights, they're not passable by emergency services? A report by RAIB states "There are no exceptions as to what may pass the road traffic light signals when the red lights are flashing; even emergency vehicles must stop."
      (On that note, I've always found the flashing red light use at fire/ambulance stations to be somewhat weird...)
