  • Sam shows how to turn a pen and an extendable magnet project without bushings or a mandrel. He makes centers from wood and takes measurements from pen parts and transfers them to the blanks.

I had wondered if you could do this without a mandrel. THANKS 👏!

Yes and you really get less vibration. Turning one blank at a time is more accurate than using a mandrill. Sam

After you pointed out that the measurements can be taken from the pen parts it made more sense. If you have more than a couple to make it would also make sense to create a tool with the exact dimensions too. Thanks for the pointers on making a morse taper.

Sam, Just in time. I have a project in mind that may use similar techniques.
    Thank you

Some great info as always Sam, I think I'm going to give this a try as well, and would save a lot of money esp. if making a lot of different styles of pens and other kits that *ahem* require a mandrel and bushings.

Man you are the best! Thanks so much for this video and the other for low gear pen turning. would this be ok for pieces that are threaded?

How can you turn that blank and not asshole out the brass tube on the end? If there is not enough pressure the blank will just spin. So you have to apply more forward tension to alleviate that. How does that work?

Sam - re the shop-made morse taper - I've made several of them, and one issue is that using a knockout bar to remove them eventually bungs up the small end of the taper, limiting the life expectancy. I can always make more, but it would be nice if I could make them last longer.
The solution use an ordinary construction nail - whatever size you happen to have in the shop. Cut off 1 - 1.5" including the head. Using your calipers, measure the diameter, and then drill a matching on-axis hole in the morse taper (while it is still on the lathe). Put a little glue on the shank of the nail, and push it into the hole. The head of the nail then becomes a metal cap thet prevents the knockout bar from damaging the wooden taper.

This is an excellent idea. I will try to remember this and share it. Also It would make sense to make the wooden mandrel from some nicer, harder wood-which I don't always do. Thanks Sam

Thanks for the info. I wanted to try making pens but don't have the money to invest in all the pen tools. Do you still have to have a press and,or any of the other pen tools?

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER

Matt you can turn a pen with NOT all the nice little accessories. I do have a pen press but you could make your own or use a drill press OR even use your lathe to press parts together. Or another option is to use a clamp. Now I do recommend a barrel trimmer for at least 7mm pens. Here is a link to my favorite pen kit. It costs less than $3 a kit. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/14/3124/Apprentice-Roadster-Pen-Kit
you could just use a hand drill and a clamp to drill out your blanks. I hope this helps.

I am working on a video on how to make a pen "on the cheap" it will be out within a month. I show how to make or use stuff you already have in your shop. Sam

Easier to just make another cone that looks like the live center. no?

    • @chrislusbytaylor3197

I was thinking that, but that end needs to drive the wood, so maybe a 60° cone wouldn't have enough contact to generate the forces needed to counter the gouge. But I think a longer cone would work ok.

I like the idea of your video and appreciate the encouragement to try different methods.
I have a HUGE problem with this video, though. You measured your short-version Morse taper from the small end of the actual machine tool, which would be too small to fit the spindle. Then you showed yourself fitting the taper you pulled out of the other lathe (still with the green finish) and never admitted the error, disclosed the piece swap or corrected your measurement techniques. The correct taper measurements would have come from the larger end of the original piece. There's nothing quite so entertaining as a bit of slight-of-hand and creative video editing.

Martin, Let me address these points one at a time. Measuring the small end first really does not make a difference. The inside of the spindle is wider at the opening. The smaller end will fit inside the spindle and contact at a smaller diameter inside the morse taper of the spindle. I then measured and turned the larger diameter which, when the piece is turned around will sit on the outside opening of the spindle, which IS larger in diameter. Now, you are correct in that I did use the original morse taper piece which I had in the first part of the video. I assure you this was an inadvertent mistake. I am not sure why I used that piece instead of the other one I turned on the other lathe. But I believe I got the point across on how to make one of these. I am glad you think it was "entertaining" and I used a bit of "slight of hand and creative video editing." This was not my intention. I am always curious when I get a comment like this is......are you a woodturner?
