The old man was looking at Askeladd's armor. It's not typical viking gear. I'm not really into history but Askeladd's armor (the one with the pecs and abs) is reminiscent to the armors used in the Roman Empire
The ships they boarded were also reminiscent roman galleys/roman triremes. Also the names (Gratianus, Lydia). It's also no coincidence they met at ancient roman ruins.
Something I feel like mentioning; Ange said that this was the half point of the season during the discussion (because most animes go for 3 months or 12 episodes), that's the reason why the end of this episode from 13:01 was having a sort of conclusion with Thorkell, Leif, and a King sitting on a Throne (not gonna spoil anything there), it was signaling the start of the second half, and I cannot wait to hear Ange's cover on the banger second opening!!
I know I’m late to this, and I don’t know if this is something y’all realize later, but the bit when Askeladd has his Thors flashback, he says “the more someone dazzles you, the more disappointing they turn out” or something like that. When they first met, he asked Thors to be their leader. Since you finished the show you know his background, he wants to make and serve his own Arturius. The flashback was meant to imply he wanted Thors to be the leader he served, not Canute, but he was disappointed because Thors said no
2:40 The focus part there was the black armor that Askeladd wears, remember that Thorfinn at their first encounter (when Thors died), Thorfinn tried to mock Askeladd because of his "weird" armor. It all have some explanation later
Askeladd is hoping and expecting Canute - a prince that doesn't have the character of a typical king (full of violence, greed and lust), to grow into what Askeladd sees in Thors - the true warrior since Canute is like a prince that is fresh to be taught new ways and grow into a king with a character like Thors. And yes, there's some parallel between Canute and Thorfinn. Both Canute and Thorfinn have opposite upbringing but both characters currently are just being driven by someone else, they are not really free to decide their own future. Askeladd is expecting both will grow into a character like Thors under his care though Canute is starting as an innocent, kind, weak prince and Thorfinn is starting as a revengeful, hardheaded, murderous warrior.
I believe what Gratianus is wearing to hold up his cloak is called a "fibula" which was a brooch of all shapes and sizes that was commonplace in the Roman Empire - hint hint there too, since you might have noticed the funky ships with eyes on them. Not very Nordic ;)
Yeah, the Royal houses of Wales (Actual British) all had links to Rome through the Silures (House of Bran) in South Wales. With Macsen Wledig being the rightful emperor of Rome, as he was the first son of Constantine the Great. His main line would end in Wales with Iestyn Ap Gwrgan in the 11th century.
I think the comparison between Canute and Thors is perfectly understood by Thors' quote, "A true warrior doesn't need a sword." From Askelad's perspective, he sees that quote put in front of him and believes in the potential upbringing of Canute and thinks he can be of great use, even though he doesn't look like someone who could wield a sword. That's why he also says, "but he may surprise us and turn out to be the perfect vessel." And even after that, he questions a famous tale/legend about how Artorius will return and revive Britannia of old. He's questioning the importance of a true warrior. Even basically questioning if Artorius is a true warrior just because he can come back and fight for his own people. Wonderfully crafted episode for further character development.
Just checked on another device and my comment isn’t viewable, I wonder why it’s not acceptable to share the History of Britain (Wales). Is it RUclips or…….?

People of Wales were the last ones to be using Roman Technology
Yea it’s a Roman chest plate armor, it’s called Pectoral Armor or Triple-disc cuirass.

"Is he making a parallel to Thorfinn?"
The flashback showed Thors..So I am pretty sure Askeladd is making the parallel of Prince Canute with Thors.
2:55 its possible that he's blind and this in turn led to increased sensitivity to hearing.
