    You are such an inspiration to me as you must be to many others. I’ve gone out scouting and shooting nightscapes quite a few times this summer as a result of watching your videos. You make it look so easy but it takes a lot of practice and a lot of mistakes before I’ve started to get some good results. Living in northeastern US means finding dark skies requires some travel and planning. Thank goodness for PhotoPills! But the thrill of standing out under a beautiful sky, alone, in the middle of the night is a reward on its own. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm. Best!

    Richard, you've outdone yourself with this marathon under the stars! You make this look so easy, do you ever experience a failure or images that don't meet your expectations? Every single image you've shown is a work of art in my opinion! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise...your enthusiasm is truly contagious and your easy going style makes your videos a pleasure to watch.

      Really appreciate your lovely comments Paula. Yes I have had many failures out under the stars but these days I suppose I can recognize a little more when that may be happening and either don't continue or change something to fix it. There is a lot of faith and self belief needed to succeed in nightscape photography that's for sure.

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Spence, I set my white balance at about 4000k for most of the shots in this video. It depends on a lot of factors. If it's moonlight I'll generally set my white balance a lot warmer .. eg, 5000k or so. Sometimes I'll set it to a lower (more blue) setting such as 3800k. Things like light pollution and atmospheric conditions will change the night sky colour as well.

    The detail in the milky way is incredible, and the light painting and detail in the foreground is absolutely top notch. Now, I'd love to see you doing one of these videos where you are using more budget oriented gear. I know you've made a video about shooting with a Kit lens and a D7000 series DSLR, but it'd be encouraging for beginners to see how you can take amazing shots with entry level cameras and glass, how to go about it, what would be the best lens for crop sensors and wide shots, for nightscape photography, and how it's more about the photographer than it is the gear. I think a lot of beginners would love to learn about it. Thanks, Richard!

    Richard, lets say you wanted to reduce the amount of the treeline silhouette in the background of the photo @ 21:50 what would you use for settings and a shutter speed for an ambient shot. Maybe disregarding what it would do to the foregrounds light painting, and plan on using a layer mask on it just for the background?

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  4 года назад +1

      So you want to see more detail in the treeline. I'd probably shoot for about 2 minutes at f2.8 iso2500 or thereabouts. It always depends on ambient light levels.

    Richard, I'm very curious how you take multiple long exposure shots to create a panorama and being able to stitch them together without issue. Wouldn't the sky have moved so much that it would cause issues with the stitching? I'm incredibly curious. I'm a huge fan and I absolutely love your work and I've been trying to create my own nightscapes recently. So inspired, thank you!!!!
    P.S. Maybe a video on editing nightscape panoramas in Lightroom or Photoshop? I learned a lot from your video on light painting and how you edit in Photoshop. Took me a few tried but I finally figure it out. Again, thank you so much!

    In years past for multi row panorama's, I was using a Manfroto spherical head coupled with a Bellerbac wooden tripod.. always happy with the results. Now, at age 73 I just don't want (can't )to carry that much weight around anymore. I am curious as to what equipment you use for your panorama's?

      @nightscapeimages.richard  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks David ... Haha, I agree about the mushroom ..!!! I was wondering when someone would question my maths. For the foreground, as you can see from this video and lots of my other work, I usually stop down the aperture and iso to get a sharper image. As usual, great video Richard! Many thanksfor the detailed explanations and beautiful locations you shared. One question: on the last image, because of the branches, the “painting” process in Sequator must have been quite tricky and time consuming, wasn’t it?

      Thanks Richard, for Panos would you ever make stacks for each of the sky shot or would it usually be just one? Using the same example, if you had 5 shots of the sky would you have say 6x5 (30 in total) for stacking on Sequator or is that too much work for Panos? This technique is applied to single shots but wondered if it's used for Panos too?

    Afternoon Richard, first time across your channel, 3 video's in and any minute my good lady is going to scream my name from downstairs to find what on earth I'm doing that's taking so long, so, quick question.. At 19.29 you mention that you have used your 35mm f1.4 to bring the background sky 'closer'. Is it the focal length that does this or the aperture, or neither (I think I'm looking an answer that starts "As a general rule..."

    Such a surreal evening. Only recently gotten into astro thinking probably not going to be too many others in central Victoria doing it, certainly haven't come across anyone else in the 6 months I've been doing it. Then in one evening I find some of Lincoln Harrison's amazing startrail time lapse over Lake Eppalock and yourself taking amazing milky way shots all around where I live. Very inspiring to say the least.
    Few questions if I may?
    1. I'm looking to get a full frame camera specially for astro (currently using a GH5), however working on a $1500 budget so will likely need to look at the used market. Any suggestions on models and what to look for?
    2. Do you know of any other programs which can be used to do the photo stitching (I already use sequator for stacking)?
    3. Any tips for approaching private land owners to get the ok to shoot on their land?
    4. If you are getting home at 5:30am, how on earth do you function at work the next day...lol?

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  5 лет назад

      Thanks very much for watching Dominic. Firstly I'd be looking at a used Nikon D750 . .. really good camera for nightscapes. You'll also need a good lens but I'm not sure that will fit into your budget. Some to consider. Tamron 15-30 f2.8, Sigma 14-24 f2.8, Samyang 14mm f2.4 As far as getting up for work ... this is my work so I get to sleep in after such a late night. I talk to a lot of land owners and I think it's really important to establish relationships with them whenever possible. I like to show them what I do and then usually give them a print of the item I may shoot on their property.
      If you're using windows check out Image Composite Editor (ICE) it does a great job of stitching panoramas and it's free.

I'll keep my eye out for D750's, though as this camera outfit will be just for night sky I really want to get the best kit I can afford. Might be a stupid question but just trying to work out the math behind your pano shots.
    When you say a 20 shot pano in 3 rows is that a total of 60 shots? If not wouldn't it be a 21 shot (3x7)?
    Same with the 9 shot is that 18 total or wouldn't it be 10 shots (2x5).
    Unless you are using a different amount of overlap on certain rows?
    Brilliant shots as always too.

    • @nightscapeimages.richard

    Hi Richard,
    great to see the development of the night.
    I personally had one similar night so far.
    I have a question about panos and lightpainted foreground subjects:
    I shot a car as forground and light painted it after that I took 4 overlapping photos above it.
    At home I blended the single light painting frames together to have a final foreground image.
    This and the other photos were merged to a pano.
    But the result was that the car was lit only to the half in height.
    For the upper partof the car the program used one pic in which the car was not illuminated.
    My Work around was to lie my lightpainted pic above the pano and bend it until it more or less fit to the pano.
    How do you work with panos and fore ground objects?
    You rarely have one at panos.
    Low Level lighting from one spot for all the single shots?
    Greetings Steffen

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  4 года назад

      Thanks Steffen. Yes the pano software will often pick the wrong image to use in the stitch. Some programs like PTgui let you choose which one's you want to use. What I do is try to light each image of the pano the same so it doesn't matter so much.
