Nice review. The Deck is awesome. SteamOS, however, is no longer Debian based, but is instead built on top of Arch. Also, Valve switched from Gnome to KDE Plasma. Not that any of that really matters.
Love my deck, probably spend more time ‘tinkering’ in desktop mode and modding games than I do actually playing, but thus far managed to play all my faves including a huge emulation library, plus WoW and ESO ❤
Got one and I’m not a pc gamer im a console gamer and this thing is one of the best devices I ever bought I had to send it back because it kept crashing on me idk what happen never gave problems before .. if ur on the fence get it
Got mine back in October 2022. Loved it for awhile but started having problems with it. All software issues! My battery would drain like crazy and die within 5 minutes. I had to format the entire device to fix the issue. That was just one problem and I’ve encountered many more. I have a gaming laptop that I can take to hotels. I don’t play portable games in public. I do like being able to game on the couch but my Nintendo switch works just fine for that. My big problem with the steam deck is that it’s still a pc and suffers with pc issues. I’m fine with fixing my laptop when it has problems. However, when it comes to my handheld portable devices I want it to just work. So, I prefer the switch now. Thinking about selling my steam deck. That’s just my experience/opinion.
@@kevinbuchanan67 I can see how someone can come to that conclusion but for I’d prefer the laptop. Better performance and bigger screen. I can set it in a tray next to me and use my wireless Xbox controller if I wanna game on the couch. Like I said above, I don’t game in public. I game at home. If I do want to game in a handheld I’d prefer the switch because of less software problems and exclusives. That’s just me tho

It's the KDE Plasma UI that's used in desktop mode, not the Gnome UI you stated. I think the speakers are pretty good (most Deck users have said the same), so I don't see the need for headphones myself (unless you're in a public place of course). The biggest issue with the Deck - and it was somewhat played down here - is game compatibility. If you exclusively play single-player games, then compatibility is very good - somewhere around 90%. However, if you mostly play multi-player games, compatibility will drop significantly for you thanks to anti-cheat software. Yes, the anti-cheat compatibility is slowly improving, but if there's any "must have" games in your Steam library thst don't work on the Deck, then that could easily become a dealbreaker for you. You could install Windows on the Deck to work around this, but bear in mind that this will provide a worse user experience and isn't officially supported by Valve either.
Hi, thanks for the comment, I got the Gnome UI wrong, it is 100% KDE :). You make a fair point re the multiplayer aspect. I have been mainly using it for single player games. I have only tried Apex Legends for online multiplayer which worked really well.
A bit to late i'd say.. A review for a device which is out for more than a year now and has thousands of reviews :D Good job, next time try be a bit faster LOL ^^
If Valve had been smart, they would have called the first year a public beta, and made an official release around now. The software only recently got in a state where it's really seamless.
Its not a bad thing for a late review. Its still gives people insight or knowledge that this device is still great in 2023 or still relevant in the future.
Too bad that new ally steam deck killer is only gonna be able to run cross play games shooters rogue lites and some strategy rpgs. Missing track pads n extra buttons
it is a little strange to see brand new reviews of the Steam Deck when it's been out for over a year and has hundreds, if not thousands, of reviews on RUclips already. Heck, there's even been a ton of "1 year with the Steam Deck" reviews too! At this point, there's not much new that can be said in a general Deck review. You could justify videos that talk about new features/fixes Valve have released in software updates, but other than that, it's time to put first-time general Deck reviews to bed I think. As for the Rog Ally, the price leaks made it sound very competitive (albeit still more expensive than the Deck, so it could remain out of reach for some people), but it has less control inputs (no gyro and no touchpads) and, even worse, comes with the godawful Windows 11 + Armoury Crate horror combo, which will provide a much worse experience than SteamOS (for this reason alone, the Ally is a pass for me).

Steam deck are hidden gems, there is unlimited features inside that's not available in other devices.
I bought mine 2 weeks ago and have been tweaking it and playing heavy ..no regrets..i will have this device for a long time .
Happy gaming 😁
Yes lol
I’ve had mine for a month love it
Nice review! I just got mine and I agree with having multiple small gaming sessions during the day. That's a solid plus.
It’s ideal for that

Same. Most of my time is spent getting game ready for some big playing session that's never going to happen.
I'm not even a PC gamer but i bought a Steam Deck.
Never regret it and is 💯 worth the buy.
It’s my only gaming device. Last thing I bought was an Xbox one years ago
I use the steam deck every day 💯
It's a great gaming device for console players as well. I've bought it after not playing on PC for like 16 years and I love it so much
Great review. I’ve been watching reviews by the dozen to make an informed decision… especially with the ROG Ally releasing soon. Well done.
@Jacob B I also expect Windows to be a little iffy, as it isn't designed for a handheld. That will probably improve though.
Happy Gaming!

@Jacob B yeah I shipped it back to them waiting on my new one to come now
How future proof is it ?

I've got an alienware laptop rtx 3070 that I rarely touch.... because of my steam deck, it's just a better gaming machine

i'm really not sure whether to get the steam deck 512 or rog ally :(
The rog ally should be landing soon so will be interesting to see what the initial reviews are price are like.
Wait a minute?! So you can sync your cloud saves from other devices to your steam cloud ? If this is the case how do you do it ?
Yes you can enable cloud saves in steam which works on the steam deck also so can continue my game on pc from where I left off and vice versa
@@FPtechtalk I wish I could sync my cloud saves from my consoles to my steam cloud that would be a game changer
Ah you have confused console gaming with pc gaming. These two things will not sync. Just the games on your steam library.
512 anti glare is the sshiz
What game are you playing around the 6th minute?
That was nier automata, it’s part of the opening gameplay sequence of the game

Have only had it 3 months and has have been very happy with steam os

I’m waiting for my steam deck to arrive and am just keeping the hype going
What County are you from im guessing offaly
Just subscribe because of the steam deck
Deck just died today at 10am
Why is everyone that talks about the steam deck old?
Probably because we have less time to play games when old. The steam deck gives play anywhere anytime option 😎
define old
Perfirmance isn't super great.
@@oo--7714 i can’t complain at all. Sure some more power would be appreciated but it’s definitely not necessary
why is the screen so dark hahaha it is crappy
The camera will adjust the brightness as not to over expose the whole scene. Overall the screen is good and bright for an lcd
I’ve never been in descktop
Its handy if you want to use it like a laptop connected to a tv
ASUS ALLY

he walk outside with sun and play , wtf he all trolling his channel visiter, you can see nothing outside ....
Why do you have gloves on in the video? Poopy fingernails?
You're a little late when the steam deck killer is set to come out in 4 days

What about ROG Ally? it releases in like a week and its 2x better in all things.
Steam OS is Arch Linux + KDE Plasma.
not Debian + Gnome
